"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThis example seems a bit questionable:
- Carole Ann Ford played the First Doctor's granddaughter, Susan, in "An Unearthly Child": she's the mysterious waif who ducks into the TARDIS, piquing the interest of Ian and Barbara. Her usefulness was pretty much over after that. The Doctor boots her off his ship in "The Dalek Invasion of Earth", the second serial of the Series Two, and replaced her with the more popular Vicki. According to Ford, Susan was originally intended to be a more dynamic character with telepathic abilities (Jean Grey). As filmed, Susan is a useless whinger whose mental 'powers' are of little value (Counselor Troi). She's fared a little better in the Big Finish audios; it's really a Depending on the Writer situation, and her maturity level can vary a lot. Ford has made clipped and barbed remarks in the past and it is clear that she still resents the show, which made her famous while simultaneously destroying her career. (She's hardly the greatest actress the island has ever produced but she deserved better than to be saddled with this misogynist dialog.)
Joe Ford: Susan twists her ankle in the first episode so clearly they have run out of things to do with the character...At one point I wondered if Susan was going to be fed to the crocodiles in the sewer.
Because (A) it's primarily complaining about what a rubbish companion Susan was, and (B) because it doesn't really fit the trope. This trope is about a person who gets replaced by someone else who goes on to become hugely famous and successful while the original gets forgotten. Susan is hardly forgotten (if anything, the fact that she's the Doctor's granddaughter means she's actually probably one of the more well-remembered classic series companions despite her shortcomings as a character), and the companion who replaced her, Vicki, hasn't exactly gone on to be one of the most well-remembered or beloved companions of all time or anything.
It just doesn't really seem to fit the trope.
(And also, just as an aside, the last sentence seems to be leading to an example of the kind of "misogynistic dialogue" that Susan was saddled with, but the example is from a review by a completely different person.)
Edited by DoctorNemesisSeparate Music and Real Life Music?
I feel like the Music section should be Real Life section(or a "Real Life-Music" section) since those are real examples and Music should be reserved for fictional examples using this trope. For example the band Platinum Weird, Weezer's Perfect Situation video and The Gorillaz' Paula Crackerz character.
Hide / Show RepliesReally, we should create a separate "In-Universe" and "Trivia" sections.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Should we change the Trope Name? There's a reason why Pete Best is too obscure except for the most diehard Beatles fan.
Or is it BECAUSE he's obscure?
Not a hundred percent certain about this one, so I thought I'd raise it for discussion here:
- In Doctor Who, the titular doctor has been replaced with a new actor ten times over the course of the series. They are all fairly well-known among the fans, but every once in a while, a Doctor appears that becomes the face of the show. This used to be the Fourth Doctor, famous for being the Doctor with the most consecutive television seasons, but it could be argued that the Tenth Doctor has become this. The other Doctors, however, are mostly doomed to fade into obscurity, only resurrected for a multi-doctor crossover or fan fiction.
Since this seems closer to The Other Marty than anything else; the point of this trope is someone who leaves a part before it takes off, which isn't really the case here, since the show was already well-known and popular when these actors took the role — granted, they may be more recognisable than the other Doctors, but the other Doctors aren't / weren't exactly that obscure when they were playing the role.
I may be being pedantic here, but this just doesn't seem like the trope to me.
Hide / Show RepliesActually, no. It's The Nth Doctor. All but two of the actors have played the Doctor for two years or longer on TV, and the show was a big hit before the original actor was replaced by the second guy. It's just not an example at all.
To clarify, all eleven Doctors are widely-known, especially among the fandom. Tom Baker is extremely popular, but that does NOT make William Hartnell, Patrick Hartnell and Jon Pertwee unheard-of footnotes.
