What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Sorry if this has already been said, but The Lion King is getting a live-action adaptation. How is that gonna work?

Anyway, Danny Glover Donald Glover (whoops) is voicing Simba, and James Earl Jones is returning as the voice of Mufasa, so that's pretty cool.

No one on the crew of The Lion King movie has ever said it was going to be "live-action". Which makes me think they're doing The Jungle Book except without any live-action human characters. Sort of like a realistic-looking CGI film.

So a friend of mine is constantly taking pictures of a mall in his hometown of Des Moines, because it's constantly changing.

Today, both he and I learned that one of the buildings in the parking lot was originally a catalog store, and then a Kmart from 1980 until 1983, and then a small outlet mall The outlet mall didn't work out, so it's now a Burlington Coat Factory.

[up][up][up] I read about it here, where they insist on calling it live-action. I'm not sure why. tongue

Queen's Blade Alleyne was voiced by none other than Eri Kitamura, yes, that beautiful, elegant and sexy elf with a mature voice was voiced by the same person who voiced Miki Sayaka. She's also drawn by a famous Pixiv artist I followed a few months ago.

No need to apologise; it's up to each one of us how private we want to be online. (Although I would say that one should still be careful about revealing non-anonymous information about other people. Just mentioning a name is no big deal, if the context isn't compromising - but it's probably good to refrain from giving names, on principle.)

Apparently triple brackets are officially categorized as a synonym for the swastika. As in, neo Nazi trolls are using them to single out Jewish Twitterers. Did they even have a legitimate use before?

I had heard of this before, but not bothered to look it up. I read the Wikipedia page just now - it was really short, but it doesn't seem there's a whole lot more to say about this, either - and apparently it was invented specifically for the purpose of pointing out that someone is a Jew. The "joke" or reference is that the names of Jews "echo in eternity", which is why an alt-right podcast had an echo effect whenever they mentioned someone who was a Jew. The triple brackets is a text representation of that effect.

All of this is absolutely despicable, of course. It's childish and hateful and bigoted and, frankly, superstitious. It's all based on the idea that Jewish people have committed historical crimes - most notably, their alleged participation in the alleged crucifixion of Jesus, an event that is not even certain to have happened and, in any case, would be in the hands of those who lived at the time and had something to do with it, and not their descendants even if the rest of the story was true.

The alt-right acts very offended when they are compared to Nazis, but their behaviour is almost entirely the same as that of the Nazi party before they acquired the power to follow through with their entire agenda. I suppose at least the alt-right isn't organising massacres or internal purges (that we know of, yet) but even that sort of stuff is openly discussed by at least some of their supporters.

It seems that the political movement that has won the most power in the US since 2010 or so has forgotten which side the US fought for during WWII, or at least they regret that the US picked that side.

[up] That, plus the three brackets are apparently also meant to resemble a bullseye-style target (for reasons that ought to be obvious). [tdown][tdown][tdown]

It's considered a form of hate speech by the Anti-Defamation League.

I've heard about it on Reddit, but I mostly see it used ironically to mock antisemites.

"Batjokes" is the ship name for the Batman and the Joker, not the term for Batman jokes like I had originally thought. I feel slightly betrayed now.

Carcharocles (the shark commonly known as Megalodon) had a bite force of 40,000 psi.

Fun fact: 40,000 psi is the starting pressure for water jet cutters.

Additional Megalodon facts: they bite down with over 10 tons of force, which is more than enough to shatter bone. It is theorized that Megalondon's means of catching prey is to take a single, giant bite, and wait for its food to bleed out.
