i also just noticed pretty much every single yoko main character has something go wrong with their eyes...caim gets one of his eyes stabbed by mana (in the sequel he was barely involved in, mind), father nier has some horrible unseen accident involving one, zero has the flower...i wonder what's yorha's deal?

[up]Which is actually a pretty common trope, usually used to show shyness and a certain emotional and social distance. One of the girls in Negima was like that, as was Hanako in Katawa Shouja and the main character of Persona 3.

Mitsuru in the latter also has that, but in her case it's used more to denote "Style" and "Class" as well as maybe "Elegance". And in Hanako's case, to be fair, she also uses it to hide her scars. So....

Edit: Interesting. But then again, not really surprising.

he only wears the mask for public appearances. while in the development studio he's probably just a regular guy. there's even a picture of what he actually looks like without his mask floating around on twitter.

edit: here you go. (he's the guy on the left)

You know, when that trailer started, I thought it would just be the same one we got at E3, just with the title revealed.

It was a very pleasant surprise to see Platinum joy.

[up][up] Oh, so that's what he looks like without the mask.

Huh.

Should we get that before someone goes and deletes it?

It's Platinum. If you even suggest of making a game even 59fps they kick your arse.

As long as it isn't made by the people responsible for the chug-a-thon that was Drakengard 3, I'm happy.

Looking back at the trailer after reading the interview, I'm willing to bet that little bot that follows her around is Navi-inspired.

Judging from the laser balls it was shooting, I suspect it will be the Weiss equivalent, acting both as your Fairy Companion and as your spell book.

Okay, I took the opportunity to take the picture of Taro Yoko unmasked and erased the other guy thanks to Microsoft Paint.

Is it ok if I put it in his Tropes page or would I be doing something unspeakably bad if I did it?

Then again, it was my first time doing that, so what ya gonna do?

or maybe he lives in a robot crotch now

interview with yoko and saito. intro and outro are in german, but the interview itself is in english.

from the video here are some main points:

2B’s weapons seem to float or seamlessly affix to her back without touching.

Battles are pretty dang fast-paced! Much like that of the original Nie R!

There seems to be multiple attacks for each weapon type; katana vs. heavy sword.

The magic bullets of the original Nie R make a comeback for you to dodge with all your might in battle!! This time around, they appear much brighter with a glowing, circular outline.

2B is able to grab ahold of “Pod” for some awesome-looking aerial stunts!

Much like Weiss’ magic bullet attack in the original game, “Pod” appears to be able to do some attacking of its own!

I’m also in the process of uploading the interview with Yoko Taro and Saito Yosuke, but here are some things that we learned from them:

Emi Evans has *not* been confirmed yet.

2B’s weapons appear to “float” just off of her back due to magnetism.

“Pod” will talk but not in a similar fashion to Weiss. Yoko Taro called it more of a “car navigation” sort of thing.

2B can grab ahold of “Pod” in order to reach things and enemies normally out of range.

The Beastlord sword looks like it’s back!

and about Yo Rha herself:

2B is an all-purpose battle android, deployed as a member of the automated infantry squad, Yo R Ha. She is equipped with a sword for close quarters combat, and can attack from range using the “Pod” support system. Her eyes are obscured beneath her standard-issue military visor, which she rarely removes.

Members of the Yo R Ha squad forgo names and are referred to only by their code numbers. Though the regulations forbid them from expressing emotions, each model has its own distinguishing personality, and 2B is comparatively cool, calm, and collected.

So apparently the cloth does have some kind of plot significance, not that it was very hard to guess. you can bet it will be off during the Tear Jerker scenes as a symbol of Yo R Ha's growing humanity or something.wild mass guess what i find especially funny is that raiden in mgr also has a cloth visor lol

after watching the interview myself here's some less important but fun stuff to know:

- reportedly, the reason Yoko does this batshit weird insane stuff is that he finds that modern games can be very well-made but remain unsurprising after about half an hour. Apparently he's interested in Undertale and requested that there be a japanese localization so he can play it :'p

- You might be wondering how it was that this game got greenlit the way it did. Apparently Saito's work on Dragon Quest gave him a LOT of clout, which is why this is a thing. god bless him.

- the Yor Ha 2b is not the same character as the one in the play.

- From the way the interviewer translated yoko's statement, expect Emil to have a cameo role at most. They really want players to be able to play this without needing to have played the first game.

- The interviewer actually asks Yoko how he manages to breath or see anything in the Emil mask [lol]

Hey, you guys think Taro Yoko would be willing to do a remake of Drakengard 1 given how he's not too proud of how it turned out initially?

PolarPhantom Since: Jun, 2012

[up]I dunno. From what I understand, retreading worn ground isn't his style.

TargetmasterJoe Since: May, 2013

So....is it too early to wonder just what will Yoko-sensei end up deconstructing this time around?

  • Drakengard 1 deconstructed the standard tropes in a JRPG.
  • Nie R deconstructed the concept of The Heartless, what happens when an older brother/father has to fight tooth and nail to save his little sister/daughter, and the idea that a setting takes place so far flung into the future that technology and science sounds like magic to everyone.
  • And Drakengard 3...um....actually I'm not sure what he deconstructed there. The idea of a Roaring Rampage of Revenge maybe?

So let's see. Our protagonist is a Blindfolded Robot Girl going up against an army of alien robots. What deconstructing mileage can he get out of that?

How about...

  • The deconstruction of the gist of a Robot War?
  • Deconstructing the idea of What Measure Is a Non-Human?
  • The protagonist having Fake Memories because it turns out that the humans are the real bad guys?
  • The aliens turning out to be the Grotesqueries or whatever the giant psycho floaty babies from Drakengard 1 were called?
  • ...

...actually that's all I can think of at the moment. sad Anyone else have any theories on how Taro Yoko will eff with our heads this time around?

I'm very sure Yoko will not bother that much with the What Measure Is a Non-Human? because almost everyone has been beating that trope with a crowbar to the point it's begging for mercy.

it seems like a natural subject to discuss given the subject matter of this game, BUT it was also the main theme of the first game and he doesn't like to do the same thing twice, so i think it might be around but not given the same prominence as in the first game where it explored the concept with monsters, robots, transformed people, sentient objects, etc.

It should turn out the non humans actually don't deserve life.

What if the ending went all Grant Morrison's Animal Man run and had 2B meeting Taro Yoko himself?

Would that be overdoing the weirdness though?
