I first heard about the A-1 style from all the posts complaining about SAO S1 character design back when it came out. TL;DR sharp faces that looked the same without hair, very minuscule nose and mouth, and their eyes. Having A-1 picture on board doesn't mean the characters will have the style though, however, because A-1 is divided into A studio to F studio. Space Brothers didn't have this problem.

On an unrelated note, it looks like the Koe no Katachi movie is doing well. 1.5~ billion yen in 5 weeks. Not OMG GREAT, but not too shabby either, especially since it aired at the same time as Shinkai's Kimi no Na wa.

That said, summaries from those who've watched it point to THAT moment being retained in the movie for MAXIMUM DRAMA. People who've read the manga should know about what I'm saying.

[up]Once you're able to take "Blank never loses" thing as part of the premise it really is just about the cast having fun.

[up][up]It's right at 1.79 billion yen right now. Since in Japan films can run for fifteen weeks at theatres, I'd say it surpassing 2 billion is pretty much assured, which will make it Kyoani's best-selling film ever (It's currently held by K-ON! Movie).

I think I kind of accepted that when Sora stripped away the planet's lithosphere, mantle and crust and then caused a supernova to win a game of shiritori. P:

I also love how no one really tries to stop Sora (or Shiro for that matter) when he goes into pervert mode. Some of the girls even like it (lennyface) It's refreshing. Also Steph is way less annoying than I thought she'd be. I like how instead of the main characters being an audience surrogate for the fantasy world, there's a resident of the fantasy world being the audience surrogate for the main characters (and also the buttmonkey).

Voice actors in LA, mainly for video games and dubs, held a strike Monday to ask for a better balance between working conditions and rates. The news you often here at cons about actors never being informed about the TITLE of the project they were hired on, suddenly forced to do stunts for mo-cap without any stunt doubles, and low pay? Yeah apparently they had enough of that. The government is going by an act for these actors that hasn't changed since 1994, and is severely outdated. SAG-AFTRA organized the strike.

A journalist named Dennis Romano published an LA Weekly article totally shaming the actors for this because he believes they "consistently make $800 per week", and doesn't get how freelancing works. He also apparently said the strike was "racist" because the acting community doesn't have a lot of Latinos (take a look at his last name a make ONE GUESS as to what ethnicity he is!). To put it lightly, voice actors are NOT happy about this, and are still tearing him a new one on Twitter. He continues to block them from his page.

...look, I know full well that America has a really bad racism problem, but come on. What does the amount of Latino VAs have to do with wanting better working conditions?

That's why everyone is saying he's insane.

And even IF actors got $800 per week, that's not even enough for A HOUSE in LA. Without any of the furniture, renovations, electricity, and anything else!!

It's enough for a one bedroom apartment, but between rent, utilities, car payments, insurance, food, and other necessities, you aren't going to have a whole lot left over.

And that's assuming you keep that $800 coming in steady every week.

Seven Seas has picked up My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness.

"As the top yuri publisher in North America, we're keenly aware of the impact and importance that stories about same-sex relationships can have on our audience. While our yuri titles offer wonderful tales of dramatized romance, My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness is an autobiographical comic, written by a queer author who is brave and talented enough to share her story in a both moving and highly entertaining way, depicting not only her explorations of sexuality, but many other personal aspects of her life that will resonate with readers."

Oh, Seven Seas. At least they're self aware. And I'll definitely buy it.

So i started the second season of Haganai, and I have two main thoughts:

  1. They actually used fishing sound effects when Yozora and Rika were trolling Sena. That's actually pretty genius.
  2. was sena masturbating at the end there

[up][up] I don't know whether I'm surprised that this got published overseas, but I guess it had enough press behind it in Japan to justify it.

Also, I just finished watching a Mamoru Hosoda film called Bakemono no Ko (or The Boy and The Beast, if you prefer).

If you've seen any of Hosoda's other works you know what to expect. The main thing that caught me off-guard was the boy actually growing to adulthood in the film. It was clear enough that this was going to be a Coming of Age Story but it ended up being a much more complete one than I was anticipating, which was nice.

[up][up][up]Ooh, nice.

The art wasn't what I expected. Hmm. I didn't read the pixiv bit, so I was expecting something along the lines of Asano or Oshimi, with a story like this. Still, though, glad that it's getting picked up, and that might be a sign that I need to pick it up too..

Quick question; I've been reading Hajime no Ippo, which made me think about binging vs following a manga weekly. Ippo takes its time in a way you can't help respect, and reading it all at once the whole thing flows incredibly. I can't for the life of me, though, think about what it would be like to follow this 30 year old story from the start, on a week by week basis. Like, all at once it's one of the most potent sports stories ever, but one at a time and it's a terrible grind of a slow burn.

Obviously reading all at once will always be better than weekly, but the question is; Do you guys have any personal instances of a manga that was a consistent shot of weekly entertainment? And for the flip-side, manga that were especially terrible slow grinds because of the release schedule sort of going at odds with the pacing.

Just finished watching Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. (I haven't seen Index yet.) It was pretty good, not the best or most original anime I've ever seen but just very solid, professional-grade material. The animation was great, the voicework was decent, the soundtrack was pretty generic and not very memorable (aside from a couple of amazing theme songs), and the writing was about as good as could be expected for an anime without a unifying story arc (Mikoto even got her bit of character development towards the end). My main gripe was that, for all its effort, it never really broke away from the 'what measure is a non-super' trope that I hate so much. The first and last arcs both explicitly went into the subject, but in the end the impression was still that the muggles are pretty much replaceable and shouldn't even hope to be the equals of those with super powers. But regardless, it was still enjoyable throughout, one of those shows where I feel like I developed a feel for the characters and will miss them and their antics now that it's over. (Particularly the Mikoto clones, I'm sad I didn't get to see more of them with their adorable kuudere appeal and hilarious self-referential monologues. JC Staff could make another 49-episode show just about them and I'd be happy to watch it.)

I have a pretty firm plan in mind to watch Index, but not just yet- I want to fit in a few other shows first for variety. Next up is Tonagura, a somewhat obscure mid-2000s ecchi comedy that I've heard described as one of the purest examples of its genre and era.

I read Ghost in the Shell. I can see why no one wants to do anything with "Man-Machine Interface", the only thing worse than the boring nonsensical plot is the shitty artwork.

[up] Try watching Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex, it takes GITS's concept in quite a different and good direction compared to the manga and movies.

None of them have the same continuity.

So I've recently in the past few weeks got a Netflix and Funimation NOW subscription to start catching up on Anime I've been missing out on.

I watch both the Little Witch Academia specials and thought they were cute and enjoyable. I think it's awesome that Studio Trigger managed to crowdfund to get the Specials out there and now they will be launching it into a full-blown series.

I'm currently watching the broadcast dub of Drifters and 91 Days. Good stuff so far.

Well, seems like the Yuri teasing boom lately was leading into, or inspired , the studios to try the genre again with a variant... it's time for controversy Yuri!

Citrus and Netsuzou Trap - NTR are getting anime adaptations I've heard.

Cool. I'll have to watch Citrus then.

I would like to see an adaption of one of Kodama Naoko's other manga, Renai Manga. Hopefully other series by the author get a shot if than one goes well.

I'm sure I've read it at some point, but I don't really remember it.

A quick google reminds me that it'll probably be censored.
