Well, I thought someone was going to complain about Hinata favouritism, but I think this fic pulled it in a much more interesting way than the anime's last episodes. The narm before and after the event didn't help either ("Do you hate me?", asketh Pain)

It gets off a little slow, and when I'm given time to think like that, it makes me feel I like should be drawing.
Still, it's giving me ideas. One day, I'll have to eat a couple dozen books on military strategy and write Shikamaru and the Methods of Rationality Art of Military Science.
I generally like it, though I find the Gratuitous Japanese and occasional deviations from the canon magic system annoying.

I just had a scary thought.
We all remember who batshit Ax-Crazy Naruto went in the manga when he thought that Pain killed Hinata. Spoilers Consider that Canon!Naruto and canon!Hinata were technically only acquiantances, and the former did not have a strong bond with the latter. That's right, he went batshit purely out of a sense of nakama, probably because both of them are members of the Konoha 11.
Now, consider that Naruto and Hinata have steadingly formed a strong friendship by the time Team 8 reached the Search for Tsunade arc. Consider also the possibility of Naruto further developing his feelings for her from merely platonic friendship into actual (though most probably hidden) romantic love by the time the Invasion of Pain arc.
Now, assuming that the author's future plans for the story would have Pain's Invasion generally the same as the canon - you know, Pain attacks Konoha searching for Naruto, Pain fights Fifth Hokage Tsunade, Pain destroys Konoha w/ Shinra Tensei, Naruto makes a late Big Damn Heroes entrance...
What do you think would happen if the Naruto vs. Pain fight (Round 1) ends in pretty much the same way - with Hinata's apparent death?

I love this fanfic. The deviations from the canon make sense because the author's made this Naruto his own. He's definitely made a better ninja of him. And it's a tighter story than Kishimoto ever wrote.
The only bum note was killing off Kurenai; I've never hoped that someone was Only Mostly Dead before then. I know it made cold business sense,but fuck it - here,she was developed into the female ninja that Kishi should have made her into; it would have been great to have her around like Kakashi. I wanted more!
As I note in my review, while I like the series overall, the way some aspects of ninjutsu (especially the element system) are handled doesn't really fit canon. For that matter, the author outright admits that he's changing Itachi's characterization (though this arguably isn't such a bad idea, since it will allow Sasuke's character to go in a different direction).

It's very believable, but for 2 things 1. Hiashi is more abusive and 2. Naruto got over Sakura a little too fast for my liking, a lesser fic would have Naruto and Hinata as lovebirds by now and finally if Naru-Hina becomes canon officially it would be really interesting to see Naru-Saku become canon in this fanfic.

Maybe this is just Deliberate Values Dissonance, but I don't get why Naruto and Sasuke can't just fight Itachi together. I hope that's what happens, actually.

That made me smile, too. This story needs more love here, BTW. Sadly, it seems practically noone has any real interest to discuss it.

Wouldn't that be more of an incentive to discuss speculations in the meantime? You should see some of the other fanfic threads; things can get downright weird (in a good way) within shorter update breaks than this fic has.

OK, speculation time:
- Sasuke won't defect because the Sound Four will be detected (probably by Naruto and Hinata coming back from a mission) when they try to recruit him.
- Hinata's father is actually Neji's father. (I didn't come up with this one.) This doesn't fit very well with the way he's been portrayed in the manga recently, but depending on how you interpret one of the Author's Notes, he might be ignoring everything after Madara revealing Itachi's motivation anyway.
Random point: Is it just me, or does the author not like Ino very much?
