Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Don't think I have too much an issue with Fok. The hero just doing a stick up robbery is nowhere near as bad as, you know, murder and reckless driving that injures a few people in a desperate situation next to multiple murders and attempted child murder

The hero just injured a few people thats not at all that bad compared to actually killing multiple people. I dont see an issue here.

Hero who accidentally injured a few people < Villain who intentionally kidnaps and/or murders several people. [tup] Fok Tak-nang.

Oh yeah, that movie is definitely a remake of Cellular. When you talked about that robbery, all I could think about was:

[up] I actually haven't seen Connected, but reading your EP screamed Cellular to me. I do wanna see Connected now that you brought it up. As for Cellular, that movie's wonderful. Easy to follow premise, relatable protagonist, no annoying characters, Jason Statham is Jason Statham, and it was great seeing Kim Basinger as an believable Action Survivor.

Was Cooper's Doppelganger recently voted up? I was initially against the idea of voting him up two weeks after Twin Peaks Revival had ended because I always thought he had agency issues. After all, he serves as a host for Killer BOB and it's already made clear that BOB makes the cut. Which brings the dilemma that does the Doppelganger really count or is it just BOB possessing him.

[down] Gregor's quote is definitely better.

The first one is totally unimpressive without context, could just as easily be a good ruler ordering the execution of an actual traitor.

Ok, Doppleganger's on the page.

@ Kookosbanaani: I voted [tdown] because of agency issues, but BOB isn't possessing him. BOB's clearly just a passenger and the scene where he converses with BOB to me cinches that. BOB is largely a non-presence in the season (owing to the actor's passing) and sits back while the Doppleganger does all the things he does. Had Silva been alive I'm sure BOB would probably go the possession route, but as is, Dopple Dale's his own man and he's doing the things he does because he finds enjoyment from them. The only thing BOB adds is a goal, something The Doppleganger doesn't understand the importance of but follows anyway.

Agency-wise I thought he was Made of Evil being from the Black Lodge as an evil counterpart to Dale. While other Lodge creations, like Dougie and Diane (Diane being capable of good actions and thus not being Made of Evil), were made through other methods and didn't subscribe to the same morality. But nothing contradicts the idea that Diane, Dougie, and the Doppleganger are all created the same way (especially with the Blue Rose backstory), so he was approved.

[tup] Fok

New EP from a movie... brace yourselves, this one is bad.

What's the work?

The Girl in the Photographs, was the last film Wes Craven worked on (executive producer). Taking place in the small town of Spearfish, a pair of demented Mad Artists go about killing girls and photographing their gory handiwork. Becoming obsessed with heroine Colleen, the duo pursue her as she teams up with Peter Hemmings, a modelling photographer, along with his two models, model/girlfriend Rose and mild-mannered assistant Chris. In a trainwreck of a movie that abuses Police Are Useless more than possibly any other work of media, the protagonists try (and I use that word extremely lightly) to save themselves.

Who are the killers? What have they done?

First seen when two girls split up after watching a movie together, they follow one home, kidnapping her, tormenting her before killing her and mutilating her face and taking pictures of her, posting them in the grocery story Colleen works at, numbering it seven, indicating which victim she was... fortunately the cops decide it could be a hoax and they should do nothing... Moving on, they kidnap Colleen's friend Jill, with one of the killers, Tom, trying to feed her catfood and delighting in her terror before he and his cohort, Gerry, also kill her, mutilating her face and leaving a photo of her corpse on Colleen's car... fortunately for them, the cops still decide since no bodies have been found, we should write this off as another prank.

When Colleen kicks her abusive ex-boyfriend out of her apartment, the duo attack him in the hallway, Tom making some homophobic remarks to him before having Gerry attack, telling him his body will fit in two garbage bags. Colleen attempts to flee the town to LA to become a model for Peter, who hosts a "safety in numbers party" at the house he's renting... where everyone seems to immediately split up. Anyways, Ben and Gerry arrive, slitting Peter's throat to take pictures of him choking to death, murder his girlfriend and then violently stab his two models to death, also taking pictures of them painfully dying. In a pathetically one-sided climax, Gerry kills Chris and then they capture Colleen to force her to be their model amongst the corpses. The last shot is of the other girl from the movie theatre, coming to work where she finds a picture of Colleen posed amongst the corpses of the others, implying the duo will begin stalking her next.

Heinousness?

Only villains, set it for the film and go above generic slashers with their high body count and violent kills.

Mitigating factors?

Although whatever their relationship is isn't exactly spelled out—one scene has Gerry put his hand on Tom's shoulder but he more seems aroused by the pictures Tom is taking of their victim—they don't show anything towards each other beyond a share love of their depraved form of art. While Gerry is a Silent Antagonist, both delight in tormenting their victims, giving them enough personality to jump above GDV.

Verdict

Worst movie I've seen this year... Oh, wait, about Tom and Gerry? Yeah, I guess they keep.

[tup] To Fok, Reginald, BMW Devi, Molstrom, Planter, Jack the Ripper and Synn.

[tdown] To Glory

Anyway I have another Star Trek villain to discuss, this one from the novels rather then a show or a video game, one of the Big Bads from the two part story, A Time to Kill and A Time to Heal.

First some background, the "A Time To" novels were a series of novels that cover a time between Star Trek Insurrection and Star Trek Nemesis, these two novels are considered the darkest of that series. The setting of the novel is planet called Tezwa, a minor world between the borders of the Federation and the Klingon Empire. There are two races on this planet, the elininae and the trinae. The villain I want to talk about is the power mad leader of this planet:

Who is Prime Minister Kinchawn? What has he done?

Kinchawn is the elected Prime Minister and ruler of Tezwa. During the Dominion War, the Federation President, Min Zife, made a secret deal with him. In exchange for allowing the Federation to place a secret array of nadion-pulse cannons on Tezwa, to be used against Dominion forces if they ever tried to invade Tezwa, The Federation would give Tezwa aid. The Dominion never invaded and Kinchawn kept the cannons. Eventually Kinchawn's scientists found a way to activate them. Kinchawn also spends the aid on luxuries and weapons, not helping Tezwa.

Kinchawn, tired of being the elected leader of Tezwa, Kinchawn plans to turn Tewza into a military dictatorship and plans to make Tezwa into an empire. Kinchawn announces plans to annex a nearby Klingon planet. The Klingons are enraged, but the Federation convinces the Klingons to use diplomacy to solve this issue, which they agree to, due to their weakened state after the Dominion War.

Kinchawn invites the Federation and the Klingons to Tezwa to discuss the matter. The Enterprise and a fleet of 10 Klingon ships orbit are in orbit of Tezwa. Picard, Troi and a Klingon rep all meet Kincawan in the Tezwa Assembly. They hold a vote as whether Tezwa will apologize or not and since Kinchawn's elininae nationalist party has the majority in that the Assembly, they vote not apologize and contiue with their annexation plans. The Klingon rep is furious, but Kinchawn orders his guards to arrest Troi, Picard and the Klignon rep. The Klingon rep is killed when resisting arrest. The Enterprise beams back Picard and Troi. Kinchawn then activates the cannons and attacks the ships in orbit, killing 6000 Klingon warriors in a sneak attack. The Klingons counter attack, causing massive damage to the planet, killing millions (the cannon bases were near civilian areas, the bases were protected, the civilian areas were not). The damage also destroys the planet's power grid and infrastructure, turning millions of Tezwans into starving refugees.

Now the Klingons are really mad and they are sending a fleet of 60 ships to conquer Tezwa, Kinchawn plans to uses his new military fleet and the cannons to defeat them, this conflict will cause millions more deaths. The President of the Federation tasked Picard with stopping the Klingons and the Tezwans from going to war.

Through tactics and cunning, Picard and the Enterprise crew manages to take control of the Tezwa bases and disable both the Klingon and Tezwa fleet. Picard is able to use rite of conquest to force the Klingons to renounce their claim on Tezwa and the Federation starts a peace keeping mission to rebuild Tezwa.

However, Kinchawn is not done, he goes into exile, taking several of his supporters in the military with him and goes from would be dictator to a terrorist. He begins a terrorist campaign against the Federation personal on Tezwa, targeting both military personal and aid workers. Worse still he is targeting trinae population centers, committing acts of genocide against them. His terrorist supporters are blowing up trinae hospitals and we even see that his supporters have brutally murdered several trinae children, including beheading one of them. 600 Federation personal have died on Tezwa so far.

As the Federation steps its anti terrorist efforts, Kinchawn steps up his terrorist campaign, his supporters plant bombs on the main plaza of the capital city, killing 400 people at once, he also lures several Federation personal into a trap, making the Federation think an abandoned building is their HQ and then blowing it up, killing 118 Star Fleet personal.

Eventually Kinchawn decides to make his final move, he orders all his forces to attack the Federation personal and trinae civilians on Tezwa at once, starting a brutal coup to regain power. Kinchawn's supporters also plant a bomb on shuttle craft and try to blow up the Enterpise and when that fails, Kinchawn's supporters make suicide runs at the Enterprise using hijacked ships. Star Fleet is able to put down is this coup, at a heavy cost, suffering 2000 casualties (how many Tezwa civilians died is unknown, but I would assume it would even more then the Federation's casualties, so I would guess it would in the thousands at least.)

Anyway Riker was captured by Kinchawn's forces in the original assault against Kinchawn's fire bases that controlled the cannons. Riker is freed by one of Kinchawn's generals who is horrified at Kinchawn's genocidal plans. Riker escapes and tells the Enterprise of Kinchawn's location and then go there and arrest him.

Is he heinous by the standards of the story?

Now this is a dark story for Star Trek.

Section 31, the super scary and secret Federation black ops team considers having the cannons self destruct, removing the evidence of Federation involvement and killing almost everyone on Tezwa in the process. Section 31 scrubs that plan when Picard succeeds in taking over the fire bases.

The President of the Federation is trying to cover up this mess in a less extreme way, trying to plant evidence that someone else built those cannons and disabling the communication system on Tezwa to prevent the truth from getting out. The new Prime Minister, Bilok, is helping with this cover up and does not mind a causalities on the way to help with this.

Kinchawn is the most active villain in the story though, with a body count of millions and far less resources then Section 31 or the President of the Federation and he is far worse then Bilok, who while somewhat ruthless, the ending of the book suggests he may try to do something to improve Tezwa. I think Kinchawn is pretty bad for a middle power Star Trek villain.

Does he have a Freudian Excuse or other mitigating factors?

In terms of motives, no, he is a power mad, genocidal maniac.

Now when the giant Klingon invasion fleet is coming to conquer Tezwa, Kinchawn decides against sending his family to safe place, willing to let them to die in the Klingon invasion, to make himself appear more sympathetic to the Tezwa population. Kinchawn tells himself that he will mourn their deaths, but Kinchawn never mentions them again for the rest of the story, so this comes off more as a rationalization for a selfish act, rather then truly caring about them.

At one point Kinchawn is interested in trading Riker for Minza, his top general that was captured by the Federation, but Kinchawn has good reasons for wanting Minza back, he was one of most fanatical supports and his top strategist, a good resources and having valuable knowledge of his terrorist plans, if he were to talk it could have ruined his plans. Kinchawn soon loses interest in getting Minza back and orders Riker to be executed. There was also a good chance Minza could have died in during Kincahwn's attempted coup and he didn't seem to care.

Final Verdict

I am going to give a yes to this sinister prime minister.
