Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Thoughts on the DC Animation revamp? Deathstroke still needs to be added.

OK, so here's one final candidate from Criminal Case for the time being. This one also came from the third season of the game World Edition. This time around, the candidate in question is a member of the infamous organization SOMBRA.

Who is he?

Omar Bahir is a 53-year-old professor who specializes in Ancient Arabic, as well as war strategy. Omar Bahir is first introduced in "Murder by Proxy" in which he was suspected of murdering a military attache, only to be cleared of those charges. Around that time, a ruthless terrorist known as the Sword, was going around the Sahara Region, manipulating rebels into overthrowing their rulers. The Sword si by all means a ruthless terrorist who shouldn't be reckoned with. Omar should know, considering that he's the Sword.

What has he done?

Towards the end of "The Impossible Dream," Chief Elizabeth Ripley is shot by a poisonous dart by an unknown assailant known only as the Sword. The rest of the arc deals with you trying to catch the murderer.

In the "Parting Shot," Omar manipulates the leader of the Mujwa nomadic tribe — Anir Aznag — into helping him abduct an 8-year-old boy named Andrew Stern (who is the son of a US ambassador) so to draw the Bureau into a trap. In addition, Omar manipulated a young man named Hamza Boussefi into founding a protest movement intent on overthrowing the Sultan. Hamza ends up getting killed, but the context behind his death isn't his doing.

Lastly in "Death by the Sword", Omar lures Carmen and the player to war-torn Iraq. Once there, they discover Anir's body, his head having been beheaded. When Andrew is uncovered, he is in a state of psychological fright. He also mentions that Anir was fighting with Omar before getting killed. The murder weapon is uncovered, and the sword is taken to Armand Dupont to inspect. Unfortunately, Armand gets poisoned by the murder weapon (it had the same poison that was sued in the dart that "killed" Ripley), and he is placed in critical condition.

Carmen and the player acquire enough evidence to convict Omar. He confirms that he was the Sword, stating that SOMBRA had hired him to sow the seeds of conflict and extremism onto the Sahara region, the ultimate goal being to make a new cell for the villainous organization. He comes close to killing the player and Carmen with a poisonous grenade, but he is shot in the forehead by Jonah Karam. Oh, and the Chief actually faked her death. Yeah....that's a thing.

Mitigating factors? Freudian Excuse?

None.

Heinous standard

Tries to start a massive war which would lead to the death of thousands. This clinches it for me.

Conclusion

Overall, unsure about this candidate. This will be the last one from the game for a while on my part. Thoughts?

A 'Yes' to Saddler, Kongre, and Omar. Abstaining on Madison for now due to the fact that fmv apparently hasn't rewatched the film recently and may have missed something.

A quick update: I will have my single longest effortpost coming up in the next few hours, so do keep an eye out for THAT.

Unsure on Omar. He DID try to start a war, but that was his job as assigned by SOMBRA. I'd be more inclined to give a yes to his superior(s).

Omar does it of his own volition. Besides that, he's also somewhat of a sadist. For instance, he sends the Bureau a note that has Andrew's tears on it.

[down] Considering how he had a knack for war strategy, SOMBRA saw him as beneficial. That, and him kidnapping Andrew wasn't apart of the plan at all; he only did that so he could stop the Bureau from intruding in his plans.

So it's less of that was his role and more he was gonna do it anyway and they realized he's good at it? I'll give him a [tup]. And after reading the edit, [tup] confirmed.

Alrighty ladies and germs, here we go. Ravok presents his longest effortpost to date, so....yay, I guess. >_>

What's the work?

Well, you see, it started when an alien device did what it did. And stuck itself upon his wrist with secrets that it hid. Now he's got super powers. He's no ordinary kid.

He's BEN 10! (Yes, yes I did just throw the theme song at you, deal with it).

Ahhh, Ben 10. Spent many a day watching this show, I tell you.

Starting in 2005, this cartoon told the tale of the 10 year old boy named Ben Tennyson, and his adventures once he finds the "Omnitrix", a watch like device that holds the DNA code for various aliens around the universe and allows the user to transform into any of these aliens he or she so wishes.

And thus, our hero begins a decade long journey (In our time) through a HECK ton of seasons and 4 separately subtitled series, with the latter three taking place years after the original where Ben was only 10, with the whole series ending in 2015 definitively (Until they rebooted it. Urgh.)

Now, this here franchise holds two CMs already, who both handily count. However....I'm here to discuss the main and most recurring villain throughout the series.

He was deemed a Non Keep approx. three years ago when, alongside a poorly constructed write-up, it was pointed out that he had a SINGLE redeeming feature that, though begrudgingly, seemed to disqualify him.

Well friends, today, I am here to dispute this disqualified villain, not JUST because I have my own input to give, but because new info arose AFTER the original discussion that...oddly was never brought up here (Maybe no one else felt like taking the time to compile his whole rapsheet, I don't know).

And so, without further ado, let's get right into it, why don't we?

Who is he?

Vilgax. The Conqueror. The Most Dangerous Being in the Universe. THE Big Bad, Greater-Scope Villain, and Heavy for darn near the entire original Ben 10 franchise.

Vilgax is a psychopathic warlord obsessed with nothing less than domination over all he sees fit.

And his greatest desire? The Omnitrix.

What has he done?

Vilgax is first seen in the pilot episode, but his crimes go back much farther than that.

Centuries ago a figure in the race known as the Chimera Sui Generis, Vilgax was exiled from his planet due to "depraved ambition" in attempts to take over, and later travelled to Earth to assist the rogue Chronosapien Maltruant (A currently listed CM) in reparing his ship in exchange for Maltruant granting him a Chronosapien Time Bomb (This will come into play MUCH later, so just try to keep it in mind).

Following this, Vilgax became a conquering warlord who is known to have enslaved at least 5 worlds, and whose army is made up of near entirely robots due to the fact that he has a reputation for murdering his own henchmen and partners at the drop of a hat.

Eventually travelling back to Earth, Vilgax comes into contact with the Earth defense force against aliens known as the Plumbers when he tries to steal multiple nuclear missiles from a government facility.

After nearly murdering the Plumbers sent against him, Vilgax sets one of the missiles to launch and destroy a nearby city as a test run, however one Plumber named Max Tennyson manages to redirect the missile to hit Vilgax's ship, resulting in Vilgax fleeing back to space for the time being.

Decades later, Vilgax returns to Earth's area chasing down the Omnitrix, a watch-like device that enables the user to transform into any alien in its system, which he has recently located and targeted for capture.

Unfortunately for Vilgax, his main ship is shot and severely damaged by another pursuer of the Omnitrix, and he is left horrifically maimed by the explosions in his ship.

For most of the first series, simply titled Ben 10, Vilgax spends his time recuperating in his ship while regularly sending out monsters, robots and the like to find and retrieve the Omnitrix from the user it has latched onto on Earth, with Vilgax ordering said user to be killed as well.

These minions he sends out cause huge amounts of collateral damage throughout the series and endanger dozens of innocents at a time.

One notable "minion" of Vilgax's was a symbiote-like robot that latched onto a teen delinquent, turned her into a cybernetic supersoldier, then forced her to hunt Ben for Vilgax under threat of her being killed.

Eventually, with his minions constantly failing, Vilgax, now fully revived via cybernetic implants, takes center stage and goes to Earth himself, where he immediately lays siege to a city and targets hundreds of innocent people with his group of drones to draw the Omnitrix user out.

When the Omnitrix user arrives in alien form and Vilgax brutalizes him, he is shocked to discover it has chosen the 10 year old boy Ben Tennyson (Grandson of the Plumber Max Tennyson) as its user, but still grabs the boy and drags him onto his space ship.

Once in space, Vilgax, realizing that the Omnitrix refuses to detach from Ben's arm, decides to literally saw his hand off to retreive the watch, after which he will kill Ben and blow up the entire Earth as payback for the trouble it has caused him.

Luckily, Ben escapes due to Grandpa Max and his cousin Gwen's interference, and manages to set Vilgax's ship to self destruct with him on it, seemingly killing him.

Vilgax survived this with relative ease, and, after a failed alliance with fellow villain Kevin "Eleven", Vilgax ends up back in space just in time for the Ben 10 three part episode/mini movie Secrets of the Omnitrix.

In it, Vilgax basically pulls the same stuff as usual, trying to murder Ben, Gwen, and Max alongside any others who stand his way to get the Omnitrix, however he is also given his worst crime yet in the series.

It is revealed through flashbacks that decades ago, Vilgax invaded a planet called Petropia, laying waste to much of the planet and trying to dominate the inhabitants.

After paying a Petrosapien named Tetrax into bringing him one of his homeworlds' powerful crsytals, Vilgax used it to blow up the entire planet to make an example of what happens to those who stand against him, with Tertax horrified that he had a hand in it. Prick.

Vilgax continues to try and steal the Omnitrix from Ben, though Ben and the creator of the Omnitrix, Azmuth, tell Vilgax that if he does so at this time, the Omnitrix will blow up and wipe out most of the entire universe with it.

Vilgax, not believing them or simply not caring, tries one last time to rip the Omnitrix straight off of Ben's wrist before being launched into space, ending his current evil campaign.

Unfortunately for this page's length, this is only the FIRST series. Out of 4. Prepare yourselves, folks, I'm just getting started.

Vilgax returns years later in the sequel series Alien Force, where it is revealed that, after his launching into space, he at some point conquered his home world, christened "Vilgaxia", and has refashioned himself into a Villain with Good Publicity towards his people. He's also got a weirder design and a worse VA, but oh well.

Using the "Galactic Code", Vilgax travels to planets, challenges the strongest fighter to a duel, and, if he can defeat them, he is by Galactic Code law granted dominion over that world.

Vilgax's M.O. is to challenge an opponent, defeat them, then drain their powers and put them into himself, thus making him ever stronger for the next challenge.

Through this, Vilgax "legally" conquers 10 planets throughout the universe, before finally heading back to Earth, where he challenges Ben to a duel under threat of blowing the entire planet up if he refuses.

Ben, having unlocked numerous more alien forms in the years since their last encounter, manages to defeat Vilgax, who is forced to leave Earth emptyhanded lest he break Galactic Code law and lose the careful rule over 10 worlds he has conquered thus far.

Later, after a temporary Enemy Mine with Ben to save his planet from an evil ghost-like alien (More on this later), Vilgax travels to the planet that the Omnitrix was created on, threatens to blow up the entire world if Azmuth won't teach him how to use it once he removes it from Ben, and is then defeated by Ben once more.

Vilgax next flies into a rage when a being named Sugilite steals from him the Tetrax Crystal, the crystal he used to blow up Petropia that ALSO serves as backup crystal that will restore the entire planet and its billions of inhabitants.

Though Sugilite pleads with Vilgax to have mercy and let him restore the billions he killed, Vilgax laughs at him, refusing to let the race be restored out of nothing but wanting to keep the Tetrax Crystal as a collectible, though luckily, Ben shows up and manages to beat Vilgax back, allowing Sugilite to restore Petropia and its people.

In the finale of Alien Force, Vilgax teams up with a being named Albedo to capture Ben, remove his Omnitrix, then grant it to Albedo to turn himself back to his original form, which he lost when he tampered with a prototype Omnitrix long ago.

Vilgax and Albeda manage to remove the Omnitrix from Ben....at which point Vilgax betrays Albedo, locks him away to forever stay in his current form, and plans to use the Omnitrix to create an army of transforming aliens to enslave and conquer the entire universe.

Ben manages to destroy the Omnitrix before Vilgax can utilize it, gets a new Ultimatrix from Azmuth as a replacement, and duels Vilgax one final time as Vilgax transforms into his true, Cthulhu-like form, ending with him being caught up in his own ship's explosion, ending the—

Bah, what am I saying, you all know he survives.

Returning in the THIRD series, Ultimate Alien, Vilgax is mistaken by a cult of worshippers for their god, Diagon (Yes that is a rip off of Lovecraft's Dagon), and try to set him up as their ruler.

Vilgax, taking advantage of the cult, learns that the REAL Diagon is sealed away in a separate dimension, at which point Vilgax regenerates his strength, then breaks the seal seemingly holding Diagon, however it was actually a ritual thingy that leads to Vilgax being pulled into Diagon's dimension.

Later returning to Earth as Diagon's herald, Vilgax paves the way for his "master" to be released and plunge the world into mind controlled servitude, however once he releases Diagon, Vilgax uses a machine to steal his master's power and become an Eldritch Abomination himself.

With his new powers, Vilgax transforms most of humanity into mindless slaves, at which point he tries to kill Ben and his team before leading the invasion of the entire universe with his new form.

Fortunately, Ben, using the ancient sword used by a warrior to defeat Diagon once, absorbs Diagon's power out of Vilgax and into himself, at which point Vilgax makes one last attempt to be a prick and tries to convince Ben to force his will onto the entire universe, which Ben promptly refuses before locking Vilgax away.

But wait, there's more!

In the fourth and FINAL series, Omniverse, Vilgax....kinda takes a dive into Villain Decay for a bit. He has a couple of cameo appearances where he is the butt of a joke now and then, and the first episode where he takes a major role he is forced into another Enemy Mine with Ben against bounty hunters seeking his head, after which he betrays and tries to kill Ben and flees.

Now, normally, I MIGHT rule these humorous moments against old squidface....but THEN...

Vilgax returns to take center stage once more in the middle of the series, where he teams up with timeline and dimension jumping supervillain Eon to travel to alternate dimensions and timelines, kidnap the Bens from said dimensions, then "mold" them into becoming their evil servants.

Doing this to around 4 Ben Tennysons, Vilgax and Eon later discover the ONLY dimension where Ben never got the Omnitrix, and travel there to kill the "No Watch" Ben, seeing as he is a "wild card".

Unfortunately for Eon, Vilgax has his own plans, and, revealing the Chronosapien Time Bomb he acquired from Maltruant all those centuries ago (REMEMBER?), Vilgax sets it to detonate.

Eon realizes that Vilgax plans to wipe out the entire No Watch Ben's dimension, proclaiming "Nice!" to the idea....to which Vilgax laughs at him and reveals his TRUE, horrifying plan.

See, because the No Watch Ben....has no watch (Omnitrix), that means that his dimension would be the easiest to conquer, and so Vilgax sets the Chronosapien Time Bomb to wipe out all other dimensions and timelines EXCEPT No Watch Ben's, leaving it the sole dimension in all of existence for him to conquer.

The Time Bomb goes off, wiping out Ben Prime, Eon, and all other alternate Bens and their timelines, at which point Vilgax tries to kill the defenseless No Watch Ben, only being stopped by the sudden arrival of one Ben Prime's mentors, the time travelling Professor Paradox.

Paradox grabs No Watch Ben, and...somehow takes him to the Prime universe, which hasn't been destroyed yet or something, and the duo make sure that 10 year old Ben Prime finds the Omnitrix once more, which recreates the alternate timelines and dimensions, which were all created due to the Omnitrix being found by Ben in the first place (Long timey wimey ball story that even I have trouble comprehending at times).

As Paradox and No Watch Ben travel back to the No Watch dimension in the present, Vilgax, immediately after setting off the Time Bomb, is beaten when No Watch Ben, having gained an Omnitrix, transforms into a Chronosapien, the species who BUILT the Time Bomb, and uses his powers to reverse the bomb's process, preventing the dimensions from being destroyed, at which point numerous good Bens from various timelines all wail on Vilgax, defeating him and locking him away for good.

And thus, Vilgax never returns COMES RIGHT BACK FOR A FINAL EPISODE.

In his final appearance in the series, Vilgax teams up once more with Albedo (Who has apparently moved on from Vilgax's betrayal of him) to harness the power of a being known as Malware to conquer Albedo's home planet, while Vilgax gets the chance to kill Ben one last time.

Unfortunately for Vilgax, the armor he has fashioned out of Malware begins to malfunction when he is thrown into his ship's power core, and Vilgax is finally beaten for good when the malfunctioning suit petrifies before being blasted into space, sealing Vilgax in a petrified state to float through space for seemingly all eternity.

And.....we're done. Yeesh.

Freudian Excuse?

Nothing. Vilgax is just a power hungry sadist who wants to rule the universe (Or other universes) because he feels like it.

Redeeming features?

Ah, the reason he was originally deemed a Non-Keep all those years ago. Let's discuss this, shall we?

If you'll remember, I mentioned that in one episode, titled Ghost Town, Vilgax's planet that he rules is overrun by an alien nicknamed Ghostface, and many of his subjects are transformed into ghost zombie thingies.

Vilgax asks, nearly begs, Ben for help in retaking his world, referring to the people as "innocents", and indeed, even saves a little girl subject of his from the ghosts and sends her on her way as she squeals in delight at having been saved by "Lord Vilgax".

Now, while one could see this as a genuine redeeming feature, I've always found it a bit dubious at best. Vilgax is OBSESSED with being a Villain with Good Publicity in Alien Force, and his "begging" Ben to come with him is easily explained as him just playing on Ben's emotions, and his saving of the little girl once more feeds into his desire to be seen as a hero.

But, I could see some taking this as genuine, so I would normally have let this slide...BUT THEN, alongside basically forgetting about and never interacting with his planet again after Alien Force, Vilgax pulls the Chronosapien Time Bomb gambit and obliterates any doubts I had about his "care" for his world.

The Bomb was planned to destroy ALL timelines except the No Watch timeline. Vilgax doomed not only his own world, but his own DIMENSION, in exchange for the No Watch dimension because it would be "easier" to conquer.

So....with that in mind? This formerly potentially disqualifying feature has been thoroughly disproved IMO.

Beyond this....nothing more. While in the Alien Force saga his desire to be a Villain with Good Publicity leads him to make some seemingly noble decisions (Letting Ben leave once he helped him beat Ghostface; Honoring his deal to leave Earth if he loses to Ben in the challenge), they are all ultimately Pragmatic Villainy, and he ditches any and all of these by Ultimate Alien, so yeah, nothing there either.

As an aside, I honestly feel like someone different had a hand in Vilgax's character for Alien Force than in the other 3, as his design is changed, his VA has changed, and he isn't as sadistic or maniacal as the other three series. Weird, but anyway, moving on....

Heinousness?

Worst in-story bar none. No one else comes close to Vilgax except the currently listed CMs Aggregor and Maltruant, and even then he has a far bigger rapsheet AND his plan with the Chronosapien Time Bomb outclasses everything in the series except maybe Maltruant's plan to restart and remake the universe in his image.

As for the baseline, he is easily over it. By, like, alot. For a Western Animated series, he is pretty shockingly nasty.

Final Verdict?

Does Vilgax have his moments of dipping into Villain Decay? Sure. Does he have an episode where he exhibits a possible redeeming feature? Yup. Do either of these disqualify him? In my humble opinion, HECK no.

Vilgax is a vile, depraved excuse for a cartoon villain, and what he pulls with the Chronosapien Time Bomb completely annihilates any and all possible redeeming, decaying, or disqualifying features he might have for me.

Personally, he is an easy, easy, EASY Keeper.

Whoof. Think this is the longest running story I've ever proposed a baddie from, hence the length. I go take a nap now.

Seems like Omar's got enough votes. Here's a rough draft:

  • Omar Bahir is a professor specializing in Ancient Arabic. While he may seem sociable and polite, he is, in truth, a SOMBRA agent. As the Sword, Omar manipulates rebels into overthrowing their rulers, the end goal being to incite a massive war culminating in the Sahara Region becoming a cell for the nefarious organization. When the Bureau becomes involved, Omar shoots Chief Elizabeth Ripley with a poison dart, seemingly killing her. In a scheme to draw the Bureau out, Omar coerces a harmless tribe leader into helping him kidnap 8-year-old Andrew Stern, only to decapitate him once he had no further use for him. Armand Dupont's life is also placed in critical danger when he is exposed to the poison on the murder weapon. Omar finalizes this by attempting to kill Carmen and the player with a poisonous grenade. Charismatic and manipulative, Omar stands as one of the most dangerous of the Bureau's adversaries.

[tup] Vilgax. I always saw him as a character who was written as a CM in the original series but then wasn't a CM in the next series or so but then in the final series crossed the line right back into being a CM and remained there. A comparison could be made to Megabyte from Reboot - there was a time where he wasn't a thoroughly evil monster but when he became one, there was no going back.
