Thread created as a spin-off of an Ask The Tropers thread.
There have been some recurring problems when it comes to how to refer to a character due to them being potentially transgender, such as Yamato or Snapdragon, or has other circumstances that make their gender identity/pronouns unclear. While in the past each character has gotten their own dedicated thread, the latest problem when it comes to how to interpreted Bridget has raised an opinion that there should be more of a general thread discussing these topics in case any future problems come up. Preferably we should discuss one character at a time before moving up to the next character.
Queries about references to a character's deadname are also on-topic here.
Spoilers in the thread must be tagged.
As a rule of thumb, using they/them in cases where the character's gender is unclear is acceptable.
If someone disregards consensus that was established here, particularly if a character is clearly trans and someone is trying to deny that, it's something to report on Ask The Tropers rather than here.
Spoilers in this "Resolved characters" folder are unmarked.
- General policy on characters who reincarnate/gain new bodies, and have their gender change when they do so (in specific, Eternals (2021), Doctor Who): When discussing a particular incarnation/body, use the pronouns the work and its characters used for the character in that form. When a character has used different pronouns at different times (e.g. for different incarnations), default to they/them pronouns if discussing the character overall. Discussion begins here.

I'm very firmly in the "confirmed as a canon trans woman means using she/her" camp.
It's been way too long for me to remember what the show did for her namewise, though.
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faerI haven’t seen it but, since she’s a trans woman, I agree with using she/her.
Wait, which character are we talking about?
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Helena Handbasket from Friends. Chandler's mother.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI want to talk about Momo from Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. While they have a the appearance of a young girl, they have a masculine voice and the page the page often changes their pronouns from she/her to they/them.
Here is what their character page says about them:
- Ambiguous Gender Identity: Despite appearing as a girl, Momo doesn't hide the fact that they weren't born as one and looks the way they do because it's "cute". Officially the game classifies them as male. The best way to talk about Momo is that she identifies as "cute," and leave it there.
I haven't yet played the game so I'm not sure what pronouns the game refers to them so I'm discussing here.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AHaven't played the game myself, but the replies to this Steam community post claim that the game clearly states that Momo is a boy, and is an otokonoko (femboy).
I'm just a psycho, babe! Come and go out my mind. I didn't lose it, babe! There wasn't much to find. The fact that there are conflicting information about that makes it more difficult. Due to personal experience, I can't tell if the "garbage localization" accusations is a genuine complaint or an agenda made by anti-localizers over what they want and not realizing that some things just can't be translated well without some compromise.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AWhat little I've seen indicates that Momo's a boy in both the Japanese and English scripts and by game mechanics.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.I have also not played the game but the information presented so far doesn't seem to have ambiguity about Momo's gender. The Steam thread is complaining about the Wiki (fan source) having Momo as female, but that information was added pre-release and has since been corrected, with the editor who originally made the profile being thankful for the correction. The Twitter post about localization is not about Momo not identifying as a boy, but about Nowa apologizing for making assumptions which isn't in the original. Both versions have Momo say "I'm a boy"
If that's the case, then he/him for Momo (and maybe add a Dude Looks Like a Lady entry).
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AJust checked the cutscenes, ending convo, character background and epilogue for Momo. He/him pronouns, pretty direct self-identification as a boy, his background is rather coded but I don’t think it rises any further than Rainbow Lens allegory (can see it for yourself here at 39:40: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2I0AWPQv1Gc ).I think the confusion comes from how he blatantly takes inspiration from Cagliostro, who is transfem. Though on the subject of Granblue characters, I brought up Balurga back on page 55, and since then there's been no real movement on that front, so could we get him added to the resolved folder as well?

Viewer Gender Confusion on the YMMV page seems appropriate too, if it's not already there.
Asking again to revise Apep's use of it/its pronouns in favor of she/her pronouns since as of patch 4.6 of Genshin she's being gendered with she/her pronouns.
Oissu!
Yeah, she identifies as a woman IIRC
