All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

Question. Since when does "merging" mean "cutting"? Insane Forgiveness was voted to be merged with Easily Forgiven, but what was actually done was that the former was simply cut without any effort being done to move examples, and made into a redirect. Is that a standard policy, or was the ball dropped?

The ball was probably dropped.

It's been nearly a month since the issue with Idiot Programming has been resolved, but the thread isn't closed yet. Should I have notified a mod, or is there another reason why the thread was kept open?

It looks done, should you should have notified a mod. Using the "Holler Mod" button works for this purpose.

Why was my thread for This Trope Is X declined? ~Septimus Heap, you're right, the pages on the index don't share a word or phrase in their title so it's technically not a Search Generated Index like I claimed. However, it's as useless as an SGI because the tropes themselves (as opposed to their titles) have no common feature. Also, the page claims that the index is for trope titles that are snowclones, which, as I said in the thread, isn't true at all. A work can use most of these tropes without using snowclones of their titles that replace the placeholder.

Well, an index that catalogues tropes based on a trait of their name is not necessarily a problem, which is particularly relevant given the TRS backlog.

I thought the reason why Search Generated Indexes were disallowed is because the tropes themselves are not related, only their titles. How is that also not the case here? Also, the description is still wrong. Ignore the backlog for now.

Search-Generated Index says tropes should be catalogued by their relevance, usage and nature, not by their titles.

I am worried that the Casting Gag thread will get locked at the end of the month due to the New Year's Purge. It's gone stale recently; does anyone else want a say on that trope's problem?

[up] Since the article in question is an index, I'm not sure how "broken" it really can be if it's a Search Generated Index. TRS is for tropes that are broken so we can repair them... and even when it isn't a trope, there still needs to be evidence that the article is broken in some way.

It seems like you could ask about that index in ATT rather than taking it to TRS.

That said, I personally don't see this as a searchable thing. If you search for "X" — the common element in most of the names for these tropes — you'll find articles on X-Men, X-23, The X-Fils, Xenoblade Chronicles X... but you won't find, say, Heh Heh, You Said "X".

[up] You're completely missing the point. As I said above, tropes should be categorized by their relevance, usage and nature, not their titles. That makes the index useless.

I think you missed my point that ATT can handle the issue of "a useless index." As already stated, TRS currently has a backlog so something like that doesn't exactly need a TRS effort...

So I should have brought it up in ATT instead of TRS? I get it, except that there's currently an open TRS thread for Hollywood Style, which is an index (and not also a trope like Death Trap).

Barring that, however, I might bring it up in ATT.

The issue you brought up for the one index is not equivalent to the one for Hollywood Style. And that thread may have been made before the backlog got bad. There's no need to take it personally???

They're completely different. Your thread was about the list items. The other thread was about the description.

So, since we were a mite late about the New Year Purge. It will take place on the 7th January 2017. All threads with no activity since November will be closed at that point. Please no contentless bumps, thanks, unless it's to signal progress on a cleanup or an useful addition to a discussion.

People discussing and worrying about it may have caused the mods to consider doing it. There's been an uptick in activity due to the fear of the purge, so it makes sense to give the people what they want. Or at least, that's my guess based on what I've seen around the forums lately.

I'm going to presume the thread for The Dragon will stick around since that requires a lot of work (some of which has been done) and is too major too close, even though progress stalled a bit in October.

I don't think so, actually - there has always been concern that the The Dragon effort is a make work project that takes up undue amount of effort.

So what should be done with the page, then?

Also, what's a make work project?

The claim is that fixing the examples of The Dragon is not a productive use of tropers time.
