BUGS BUGS BUGS in the Code Updates

Go To

NOTE - Report bugs along with your browser/version, operating system/version, and device. There are thousands of these combinations, and most bugs right now only affect certain combinations.

Tropers - As you are probably well aware by now, we've made a ton of changes to TV Tropes. Although most of the changes you see are primarily cosmetic, we are also part way through a complete overhaul of the backend code. With so many changes under the hood, it is entirely possible we broke a few things. If you find something that does not appear to be working correctly, this is the place to report it.

Please note, this thread is for BUGS only! If you have an idea, wish, or anything to say that is not related to a bug, please do not post it here. Those things can all be posted and discussed on other threads in Wiki Talk or the Tech Wishlist.

The more information you can provide about the bug (e.g., browser, operating system, etc.) and how to re-create it, the more likely we will be able to squash it.

Happy Troping!

EDIT: Here are some things that have been reported:

  • Login issues
    • Logins not sticking between devices
    • Some people are still having issues with dropped logins.
    • You can't log in if your username contains a space. Remove the space.
  • Javascript: Your device must be able to run Javascript from tvtropes.org, static.tvtropes.org, ajax.googleapis.com, and netdna.bootstrapcdn.com. If you are blocking any of these, lots of things won't work, like editing pages.

I don't think any edits were lost, just the histories.
Ah, OK. Not as bad as I thought.

Most of it seems fixed, but one-post (locked?) threads are still showing as empty.

Incidentally, the issue was related to storage space. That means that anything added to the affected systems (article history entries, new forum topics, etc.) during the downtime will probably have been permanently lost.
Methinks the issue with the image uploader not actually shrinking images over 350px mentioned in another thread should be considered a higher priority if that's the case, unless images are stored separately...

[up][up] Those threads were created while the system was broken, and as such did not save.

[up] The image uploader is on the list to fix. As far as I know, images are uploaded to the static server, which is different from the database server.

I went to edit YMMV.Pokemon Ruby And Sapphire and the edit box was stupidly small and left-aligned for some reason.

I made an edit to Kubera and the edit box looked odd (very small, I had to drag and expand it.) When I saved it, it had put escape characters in front of every quotation mark and apostrophe on the page. I'm reluctant to try and fix it, since the bug seems to still be happening and I don't want to touch things if it will mess them up further; this is happening to me on both Chrome and Firefox, though, so I figured I should report it here in case it's a site issue.

I didn't put all of those \\ on Ring of Honor, yet there they are, and the text box for editing was so small I wouldn't be able to see enough of what I was doing to make so many edits, much less fix them now. All of the other Ring of Honor sub pages seem to have the issue but none of TNA's.

Edit:PC, Windows, Latest Firefox, the TNA pages seem to be doing it now too.

Both the tiny edit box and escape marks glitch happened to me on Quotes.Extreme Omnivore. I was lucky enough to have a copy pasted in a text program, though, so once it's fixed I can just paste it in.

Oh, and I'm on the latest version of Firefox.

Got the same issue in Firefox. And no preview button.

I tried to remove those // from my sandbox page. After I saved the changes, not only did it not remove those //, but somehow added even more of them onto the already existing ones.

I'm also on Chrome.

The same thing (with the escape characters, small input box, no preview, etc.) happened to me. I looked at Recent Changes, and this seems to be a common problem.

Tiny box and escape sequences appearing also here. First seen in Windows 7, Chrome; then attempted to fix the escapes in Windows 7, Firefox(didn't work).

As other people have mentioned, edit boxes are incredibly small and too far aligned to the left. I was trying to edit the YMMV page for Ojamajo Doremi and it looked really messed up. I thought it might be connected to Wide Load, but it's like that regardless if it's on or off. The sidebar also vanishes when trying to edit, regardless if Classic View is set on or not. I'm using Chrome if that matters at all.

Regarding my latest edits to YMMV.Go Princess Pretty Cure:

  • As others have mentioned, the edit box is tiny and to the left - UNLESS I click on the word "Visual", which is right next to "source". Then I get a much bigger editor window.
  • If you look at the page's history ( https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=YMMV.GoPrincessPrettyCure ) you will notice several changes I did not make. All I did was remove the Complete Monster entry (for reasons explained in the edit reason). I did NOT do anything else, such as changing "CrowningMusicOfAwesome" to "{{Crowning Music of Awesome}}" or changing "HilariousInHindsight" to "{{Hilarious in Hindsight}}". I have no idea why those changes happened.

Same here. Most of the edits I last saw via my watchlist show the slashing problem. It might be a good moment for me to take a break and do other activities anyway.

My first attempt at fixing the \' issue accomplished nothing - and instead of a small editing box, I actually got a really big one! Since then, it's been working for me and I've been able to fix pages - it's just that I'm one guy and many other editors are having these problems.
