Outbreak Company

Originally a Light Novel. Otaku gets sent to fantasy world to promote Japan's otaku culture.

Yeah, it's pretty silly, but a lot of fun so far.

Episode 1. In which they speak backwards.

Let's see, rather extreme application questionnaire, looking for someone with few if any social connections, not being told about what the job actually entails... Yeah, he's not getting out of there unless he walks out the door before it's too late. In which case we wouldn't have a story.

That romantic tail grab in the OP was cute.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reference. That's not especially common. And a few other references. This series probably should have quite a few references, or he's not a real otaku.

"Do you know how to leave?" Rather effective Armor-Piercing Question.

Ah, he's a Madoka fan. I hope that's not foreshadowing. Or maybe that would be interesting...

You know, while I understand it's kind of second nature for her, it's kind of odd to assume someone she knows knows nothing about that world to share their discrimination.

The one-eyed lizards are cute.

So, they warn him about not acting out of line. And then they warn him not to act out of line. And then they tell him to copy what they do exactly as to not offend anyone. Yeah, this is going to end well.

To be fair to him, it's all their fault. They hire a complete otaku, they don't say anything about who he's about to meet, and they expect him to keep his cool? Right. I don't think they thought their cunning plan all the way through. For actual diplomatic meeting like that, you're drilled in customs and who you're about to meet. If time and resources allows. And they had plenty of time for at least some basics while travelling there.

Might be an interesting series. Might not.

The premise sounded dumb, so I expected to avoid this like the plague, but this has been a weak season so far for me.

The premise is dumb, but once you get past that, they seem to do some interesting things with it. And it makes just the tiniest bit of sense that I can over look it so far. If you encounter a land that is a fantasy novel, it makes some sense to send someone who knows about them.

I liked his interactions with Musiel. Otaku MC is overdone, but it was handled pretty well here. If nothing else, I like that he isn't a complete pervert for once. (or is at least a bit sane about it). Similar, I thought his Fish out of Water moments were handled pretty well and in a less than totally stereotypical way.

Also, I wonder if they are kind of setting him up to fail for some reason and hoped he would cause a diplomatic incident

Anyway, there seemed to be some potential there, so we'll see where it goes.

[up][up] I checked this out exactly because the premise is dumb and fortunately this shows knows that it's silly at its core.

I rather like the MC too. Not your typical otaku lead. Not your typical got-transported-to-another-world lead either.

Favorite part of the episode has got to be the segment where Musiel starts helping MC change clothes. That maid is hilariously submissive.

I am excited for this! I found it very clever and funny, as well as beautiful, and cannot wait to submerge myself in this fantasy world of dragons and moe.

I also find the premise rather cool and not stupid at all? Spreading culture and establishing a common ground with a newly discovered world is important...If it is otaku culture, all the better, as that would be likely to get much of the population hooked and put Japan in their favor. Besides, manga are like textbooks!

I like Shin, as well as Myucel and Miyori. I will probably come to like the tsundere empress in time, and of course the reptillian gardener will surely hold a special place in my heart for being both a reptile and a gardener.

...Was the whole moe beam shot at the empress an actual thing, or just a visual effect?

I imagine it will start out as fun and games, and then become srs political fantasy business.

Episode 2. In which they read.

I wonder if him getting people to want his head is going to turn into a running gag...

Someone's a Yaoi Fangirl...

"What now?"
"We haven't a clue."
And they wonder why they've not had any success earlier?

That's quite a list of alternate titles. I found Straight Witches to be one of the funnier ones. Well, not that I've seen more than a few minutes of the series...

Okay, he's definitely experienced with starting up that old console. Though technically, that shouldn't be possible for someone with no lips.

The Supreme Ruler does not run. She merely walks with great velocity.

I find it a bit amusing that he's talking about equality and stuff, and yet calls her "Your Highness" all the time, rather than what she specifically allowed him to call her.

So, the timid maid is also a battle mage. Could be interesting.

That ending line is a rather cliché way of foreshadowing a darker plot.

So...many....references. That otaku gallery is definitely paradise.

I recognized Hataraku Maousama, Shingeki No Kyojin, Yotsubato, Inuyasha and two? Hatsune Miku look-alikes, but there were clearly many more.

They chose to give them the most ancient of gaming consoles. I guess they have electricity, at any rate. Huh.

Obvious camera-lizard is obviously a camera.

Fun episode with cute character interactions and even some world development. Fantasy land is not utopia.

What was the manga reference toward the end from? Mimizuka to Yoru no Ou or something?

Fire, air, water, earth...legend has it that when these four elements are gathered, they will form the fifth element...boron.

[up][up] the best alternate title was "Injection! Octopus Girl" - bc..that's not the total opposite or anything... But yeah, Straight Witches did seem especially clever(although I've only seen the future version).

Overall, I like the way most of the characters seem like reasonable people rather than being only defined by how they are introduced(like the Supreme Ruler not going tsun-tsun ALL the time).

"The premise is dumb" and "the current season is weak" is probably the dumbest and weakest reason I've seen yet, considering...Teekyu S3 exists and is part of the current season. cool

And of course, because the MC is now in the Holy something Empire, there would then be either a rebellion/insurrection/revolution (somewhat implied with the presence of the Japanese not entirely accepted), an invasion from another country/nation...or both.

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.

They could lodge an additional twist and have another portal open up so that the "invasion from another country/nation" comes from THIS side of the universal divide. Or maybe not invasion, but merely competition? In fact, the opening does seem to indicate there might be a second portal...

While possible not a full on invasion, I'm guessing at some imperialistic aspirations from the Japanese side. (they may hope the MC fails to give them an excuse if he is executed or something)

It's interesting how our MC isn't just a raving otaku, and quickly realizes that it's not going to be an easy task making the otherworlders appreciate the media they're trying to "sell" when most of them not only can't READ, but no free time to do so either. Education is obviously going to be a starting point, but... judging from the preview, did they somehow construct a school (complete with modern style lockers!)?

Oldest are also the simplest games too. I don't recall needing to read the manual when I was six to figure out what to do in Super Mario or Duck Hunt.

Classism and racism. Oh, how you mar the pretty setting. Interested in seeing where that goes.

If this was my family the Empress would have got a slap across the face by now.

Episode 2: This is becoming less about otaku culture and more about education and stuff, and seriously that should've been the first thing they addressed because, duh.

Currently waiting for Petrarca to become less annoying. On the other hand Myusiel garners even more points for being a battle mage. Heck yeah!

That lizard totally does not look suspicious at all.

Loving the references! Glad to see I'm not the only one who chuckled at Straight Witches.

@ Another Duck I thought the last line meant his budding romance.

episode 3, also known as things get serious.

the amount of death flags from Miusel was almost too funny to watch, except nobody caught them so she gets stabbed for real. I hate episode previews that ruin a perfectly reasonable cliffhanger.

the MC is competent, and is surrounded by competent people, which is refreshingly new.

from the department of thickening the plot: who gave the fire bomb to the xenophobic fundamentalist assholes? my money is on the priest, even if it's too easy.

Episode 3. In which Kanou stares at boobs from various distances.

First the screen pans down over her clothes, then zooms in to "subtly" indicate where he's looking. I found that rather funny.

We have a vague council. But they reveal themselves early enough.

Actual blood.

Impressive of her highness. Tsundere even with a sword pointed at her throat.

Also gonna give Minori plus points. Reasons should be obvious.

Fit Storm, or Storm Fit? Either could work, for different reasons.

"A fire extinguisher? What a fearsome weapon!"
*PAWNCH!*

I think there are several Called It in this episode.

Yeah, this is why I dislike Next Episode Previews. Though most things point to her surviving. She's played up as not dead yet, and a cliffhanger very rarely resolves as an immediate downer.

This was a good episode.

Gotta agree, it's a great episode. People have already pointed out a lot of the stuff I was going to mention, so I'm just gonna add a couple a things. The Alessio guy turned out to be a better bad guy than I expected, and the next episode preview was highly amusing. Petrarca shows good stuff this episode too.

Man episode 4 might not be as awoseam as episode 3 was but still funny as hell. MC teaching class about Voyurisem XDDDDDDD All those kness and panty shots XDDDDDDD And then Minori's lessons about Yaoi- Sorry BL fanatics XDDDDDDDDDDD Man just halirious XDDDDDDDDD MC is one the best MC this season. He may be an otaku, but he has a big heart. Petra has finally warmed up and change, thanks to Myusiel.

New addition to the cast Elbia, a werewolf girl spy which was sent to draw militray bases and information. Basically thanks to our MC her skin is saved and now she's Double Agent
