This discussion is an excellent reason as to why The Scrappy and similar things are YMMV.

"Some fans like them so they aren't a scrappy" isn't a valid reason to delete The Scrappy examples - "some" is not enough to disqualify them.

[up]Well I was wrong for deleting the naruto one, but I'll add Diamond Tiara back because on almost every My Little Pony Poll, she is usually voted one of the worst ponies, but I'm still wondering if Silver Spoon should be added too...and Plus, I'll add it back, but I will rewrite it to sound less whiny. Anyone want her back?? Plus should Gilda also be added back, because she's also hated and is a Draco in Leather Pants.

@25 and I have no idea who Wesley is.

[up]For the Naruto examples, I'd add that Itachi became a full scrappy for the majority of the fanbase during the War Arc after he had been resurrected. While alive, he was a Base Breaker, but when he was dead he fell solely into the Scrappy category due to a horrible fight.

[up][up] I don't watch Naruto (I hate the show lol), but the character is written as a Base Breaker in the YMMV, you'll need to do a lot of research and look for polls that show he's one of the most hated characters so he can qualify as a scrappy...I'm only adding Diamond Tiara back because I see many polls on who's the worst character and she gets the most votes.

I need help...does anyone vote for or against Itachi and Diamond Tiara to be added back???

Here's a write-up for Itachi Uchiha:

Uchiha Itachi is often seen as a God-Mode Sue and a Creator's Pet within the Western Fandom. While he still has fans there its not quite as much as he has in Japan itself where he's consistently in the top 5. However, things started to come crashing down even there when Itachi got resurrected for the War Arc. He turns what could have been tense, extremely fun fights into making them either boring (as in the case of the fight with Kabuto) or just downright insulting to the other characters (such as against the mind-controlled Nagato). The unneeded Character Shilling that he keeps getting even after being permanently sent away also is grating on many fans who see it as unneeded filler-even Itachifans are seeing it that way.

Regarding what Tiggers Are Great said:

The trope isn't about the characters we hate/hated. It's about the characters that most people hate.

Also, even though Scrappy does have his defenders, practically everyone hated him, and he is one of the most despised characters in cartoon history, which is why the trope was given the title "The Scrappy". I don't think the trope needs a name change, I think it's fine the way it is.

So were trying to clean up The Scrappy? How exactly are we suppose to know if a character is hated by most of the fandom? Every character has its fans and haters if you look hard enough.

[up] THIS!!!!

If the character gets too many complaints and has a very little fanbase and defenders, then they fit you gotta remember, not everybody hates the scrappy...I had to remove examples AGAIN because they were shoehorned. People keep adding the Kankers from Ed Edd N Eddy back when it's been stated that they (well Marie) are ensemble darkhorses. I think it's shoehorning when it comes to the Kankers.[up]

People keep adding the Kankers from Ed, Edd n Eddy back when it's been stated that they (well Marie) are ensemble darkhorses. I think it's shoehorning when it comes to the Kankers.

Well if only Marie is an Ensemble Dark Horse, shouldn't the other Kankers at least count as Scrappies? I have seen Kanker sister detractors on internet forums; I know they exist, and in fact I am not the only one who has tried adding them onto this very wiki's Scrappy page. (Which should give some sort of indication.) In fact, the edit reason for removing them even ends with "while some find them annoying."

What's odd about their exclusion is that Kevin is up there, and his entry is extremely short and just says that he is hated for "being a massive Jerkass towards the Eds even when they don't do anything to him." When the Kankers do exactly that as well, shouldn't that count to something? Also, Eridan Ampora is on there for his actions and personality (I'm not arguing with this; I don't really like him either) and it flat-out says that he has "both very devoted fans and haters," pot holed to Base Breaker. (Which had gotten an Example Sectionectomy due to what qualifies being highly subjective and nearly impossible to determine, since pretty much everyone has fans and haters.) While the actions and personality are different, is very similar to the case with the Kankers.

I am at the very least asking if May and Lee qualify. They shouldn't get a pass just because their sister is an Ensemble Dark Horse. It would be like saying Sarah doesn't count because her friend Nazz has a decent fanbase.

Well in the YMMV page, Lee was the only one that was a Scrappy, but at the same time, because they have been added and removed many times , I assumed it was shoehorning.

Eridan is def a base breaker rather than a scrappy.

From what I've seen, the Kankers are definitely not Scrappys.

Jesus Christ, this trope is long. I can definitely see why this needs a clean up. Are we starting from certain folders? Or do we just report the more iffy examples?

I checked some, here's some of the ones that seem iffy to me IMO:

TV:

Richie and Tessa from Highlander

Stacy from Big Wolf on Campus

Sweets from Bones

I can look for more later, but it's hard to pick things out with how cluttered it's getting.

Going through the literature section.

How can every character in the harry potter series be scrappies? And wouldn't most of those examples fall under Base Breaker rather than The Scrappy?

Going through this trope, a lot of these examples sound very whiney.

@38 I agree. And as for the literature, you should do a lot of research to see if the characters qualify. Go through a wiki, look through forums, and deviantART.

And BTW, does anyone think Jimmy from Ed Edd N Eddy counts as a Scrappy? Many people see him as the worst character and people hate him.

PLUS, some examples need to be rewritten because some of them sound too whiny.

The page is supposed to be about unintentionally hated characters

The trope says nothing about it having to be about unintentional hatred.

Going over some forums and tumblr, It seems conflicting on Harry Potter. Maybe someone who is more familiar with the fandom could see about those examples, I think we need more people on this effort.

A long time ago, I had added this entry to the Video Game section of The Scrappy:

  • Rowland from The Orion Conspiracy definitely deserves to be called The Scrappy. Why? For starters, he has an annoying, little-kid-like voice. He is also fat, and admits to being a Basement-Dweller (did you hear Unfortunate Implications?). He is selfish, lazy, whiny, and none of the other characters in the game seem to like him very much. In fact, his supervisor has to constantly push him into working on stuff. He does not care about top secret stuff, and he only cares about eating chocolate. He has to be bribed with a blueberry pie before he tells Devlin anything. He is also a hypochondriac. The final blow comes when he happens to overhear Devlin and Meyer's conversation about damage to the engines. He reveals himself to be a Dirty Coward who essentially says Screw This, I'm Outta Here and takes off in a ship leaving everyone else behind. Guess what? Devlin has to go to the laser cannon and shoot to kill Rowland. Take That, Scrappy!! A conversation between Devlin and Meyer reveals that Meyer would have happily shot down Rowland, and that if Rowland had not been shot down, the alien cocoons in the ship would have hatched and killed him anyway. Rowland was obviously a dead man the minute he got into that ship and took off. His death could be considered Alas, Poor Scrappy.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if Rowland really qualifies for the trope. It's about unintentionally hated characters, and it seems that the people behind the game actually wanted you to hate him!

Oh, Equestria, we stand on guard for thee!

The important thing is _how_ you hate him, I think. Like, if you love to hate him, if he is a bad person and the narrative treats him as bad and you feel good when he gets what is coming to him then no, he is not a Scrappy. If he is supposed to be annoying but is straight-up intolerable and makes the work hard to enjoy, he could be a Scrappy.
