I'm surprised this thread didn't already exist. Any Diamonds out there?

I have some of her songs on my PC. I love "Power And Control", "Primadonna" and "Lies".

I'm not too into their song "I Am Not a Robot", but my friend and I (we saw them open for Coldplay a few months ago) think their song "How to Be a Heartbreaker" is So Bad, It's Good. We made a parody called "How to Make a Hamburger".

They aight otherwise though.

I never would've heard of them in the first place had they not had a (mediocre) free song on iTunes.

Electra Heart has been on my list of new music to listen to for a while *

, mainly because "Primadonna" is super-catchy. The album is mostly what I expected, i.e. dance-pop with quirky, dramatic vocals. Overall, not something I see myself revisiting too much, but I get the appeal - I do like her voice and there are some nice hooks. Oh, and I was pleasantly surprised that a song called "Sex Yeah" (one of the bonus tracks) was an examination of sexualized pop culture rather than anything approaching Intercourse with You.

[up][up]I'll agree that "Heartbreaker" is one of her weaker songs, but I like it in the context of the Electra Heart narrative. The whole album is written from the persona horrendously heartbroken girl who copes by affecting the traits of various female archetypes and breaking other peoples' hearts. You can see this the most explicitly in "Valley Of The Dolls", "Homewrecker", "Power & Control" and "Fear & Loathing" (which, by the way, are some of my favorite songs on that album).

Her first album, "The Family Jewels", was written from her own perspective rather than from a persona.

Oh, no, I was referring to "I Am Not a Robot". I think "How to Be a Heartbreaker" is squarely So Bad, It's Good.

Wasn't aware it was a concept album, though.

Ah, I see. I like "You Are Not A Robot" myself, but I can see how it might not appeal to everyone.

To be fair, I was listening to it with a friend when I listened to it for the first time, and maybe his opinion of it rubbed off on me a bit, and I haven't really listened to it since. Maybe I should give it another shot.

Boom! Necro!

On one note, I'm going to see Marina in concert this year!

On another note, let me try to classify each song on the American album based on the the Archetypes: Su-Barbie-A, Homewrecker, Primadonna, and Teen Idle.

  • "Bubblegum Bitch": Homewrecker/Primadonna
  • "Primadonna": Primadonna
  • "Lies": Su-Barbie-A
  • "Homewrecker": Homewrecker
  • "Starring Role": Primadonna
  • "The State of Dreaming": Idle Teen
  • "Power & Control": Homewrecker or Primadonna (or a vengeful Su-Barbie-A)
  • "Sex Yeah": Su-Barbie-A
  • "Teen Idle": Teen Idle
  • "Valley of the Dolls": Su-Barbie-A
  • "Hypocrates": ?
  • "How to Be a Heartbreaker": Homewrecker
  • "Radioactive": Primadonna
  • "Fear and Loathing": Primadonna. But possibly none or all, since this song indirectly refers to the Archetypes as a whole.

I'm most likely wrong with most of these, but let's sort it out together, with maybe some Word of God stuff.

Hmph. I was a diamond before it was cool.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to how many songs on an album I listen to twice, but I find myself liking huge swaths of everything she's done, even the acoustic versions ("Homewrecker.") Normally, I don't give acoustic mixes the time of day.

In fact, I only dislike one song, I Am Not A Robot.

Yesterday, since my mom confirmed that we got tickets, I bought The Family Jewels.

I can definitely say that Marina improved between her first and second album, in both singing voice and direction. But that doesn't mean that The Family Jewels isn't bad. It's too early for me to know which songs I like and not like, but the highlights are "Oh No!", "Guilty", "Mowgli's Road", and "Shampain".

There's something about "Shampain". It's probably the most obvious 80's throwback in Marina's entire collection, yet it's incredibly awesome with its instrumentals, laying, singing, and subject matter. Plus, shame+pain=shampain.

By the way, "How to Be a Heartbreaker" was on Glee. Not sure if this translate to a Colbert Bump for Marina.

Relevant interview.

I sure hope it does!

Also, Oh No! is on Just Dance 4.

I, too, have a deep love for The Family Jewels. I think I like Electra Heart a little more, though, because I'm ~in love~ with The Archetypes.

I first heard "Oh No!" because one of my little cousins have Just Dance 4.

Another song that clicks with me is "Obsessions".

EDIT: I'm going to upload Marina's music onto my mom's iTunes, since Mom's going to the concert with me, but she wants me to withhold the songs with profanity, since she plays her entire music library to the classes she teaches.

Currently, the songs with profanity beyond mild-PG level is:

  • "The Outsider" (one f-bomb)
  • "Hermit the Frog" (one pun involving a female dog)
  • "Girls" (one f-bomb)
  • "Bubblegum Bitch" (self-explanatory; multiple usages in chorus)
  • "Starring Role" (one f-bombs)
  • "Sex Yeah" (hard to explain; one usage of "ass")
  • "E.V.O.L" * (multiple f-bombs in chorus)

Am I missing anything?
