Y'know, Night Raid kind of reminds me of the Vault Hunters. Lovable sociopaths and mass murderers who are only better than the villains on account of the villains being totally fucking nuts.

This is true. I was more referring to how the deciding factor in them being protagonists is that they're slightly more lovable, and only slightly less crazy (like the Psychos and Handsome Jack. Gotta love 'em)

While true, I have to say there is one MAJOR exception. Let me quote myslef:

"The only person I can think of who we have seen more than twice and hasn't had [a back-story/flashback] yet is the Complete Monster that is the reason for most of the suffering (I DARE anyone to refute the claim that he is a Complete Monster)."

Thinking about it again, there is at least one other character that we don't know the background of, but the rest of my comment still stands. (I'm talking about the Prime Minister, in case it wasn't obvious enough)

I just finished Chapter 4.

That guy's face did not make me very happy happy O_O

Oh, I thought you had made it a bit further. Would have said things a bit differently if I had known you hadn't made it verry far.

Oh well. Can't wait to see your reaction to chapter 8.

EDIT: Dang it... I did a quick scan of the early chapters and thought he came up in chapter 8. Apparently that is the 2nd time he shows up, not the first.

Anyway, now you see why I said that the female called "the strongest" has a "cute" rapeface.

And yet, she does deserve some sympathy. She lost her parents to fighting and her mentor (who prayed on that sense of justice) to the assassins. Her anger is completely justified.

Also, if she had anyone she trusted and who was willing to help her see the truth of the situation, she could have been a powerful ally.

The main issue of the series is that people like her (who could be fairly easily "saved") are, instead, driven to become even more insane.

Yeah, but I didn't care about her as much as Shere. And come on. Getting ripped in half? No one deserves that, especially not Shere. She was one of the nicest of the group.

And while I guess you can sympathize with her, I really can't. She's just a dogmatic, holier than thou idiot who thinks that she's in the right because she's fighting on the side of the law. Look around you. If you really wanted to fight for justice, you wouldn't have looked up to Ogre. You wouldn't be a part of the Empire. You'd be a part of the Resistance, or even Night Raid.

There might be more of it. She were also remodeled. To get her power she went through pain that one cause wish to be dead. It wouldn't be wonder if she lost it along the way.

Anyway she is pretty far beyond Moral Event Horizon. Only way for her is be either killed (which would be mercyful) or rip of all her limbs and let her life as impotent cripple.

She needs to die the same way Schere did. Ripped in half by a huge animal, preferably her own.

Also, I'm at chap. 16 right now. A couple thoughts:

• Esdese reminds me of Captain Flynt in the best way ever. "It's our new torture dolls, boys! Let's turn up down the heat!"
• Her minions however, are utterly fucking despicable. The only one I like is River. The other two are one-dimensional sociopaths who I felt no connection to whatsoever, and thus cheered for their deaths when they came. And it was glorious.
• BRAAAAAAAAAHT! *sobs* NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
• I'm already liking Esdese's new group of flunkies. They actually seem kinda likeable, and we're getting more scenes to develop their characters that don't involve horrible dismemberment.
• Esdese... really is not the super weapon they think she is. I mean she is in a literal sense sure (chick froze an entire city at once), but they're seriously overestimating her loyalty. If I know her type of character (and as a seasoned anime fan, I'd like to think I do), she's only sticking to the Empire because they give her a good fight. As soon as she decides she's bored, or that it would be fun to do something like soloing the entire Empire for a challenge, they're all fucked. Honestly, maybe I'm being hopeful, but I think I see a Heel–Face Turn coming up. Or at least an agreement of non-violence on account of her boy-toy (hey, she could be the military commander of the new Empire if she wanted to, assuming the good guys succeed anyway...)

'Bout Esdese... Tatsumi will prolly end up killing her. New group of flunkies... the ones with Teigu, I presume?

I was also sad when Schere and Braht died. Especially since I liked them over guy-with-the-wires and Mein and beastgirl.

I know, right? Also, don't say that. It makes me teh sads :( (although I would approve of Tatsumi ending up with Leone)

Also, that was probably the best fucking "confession" ever.

A few things about the current chapter: one, Kurome is grossly overpowered, which will probably make it very interesting what kind of Teigu will be the "rock" to her "scissors", and two, how in blazes can CHELSEA (the girl with, you know, just a shapeshifting make-up kit) can be part of Night Raid's "ace in a hole".

Seriously though, as much as it would fit thematically, I don't think Akame will be the one to take out her sister.

Maybe Chelsea will shapeshift into Kurome's undead bodyguard and sneak attack her. That kind of thing works in this manga.

Honestly, I dunno. I do have a feeling that Bors' Teigu is gonna end up doing friendly fire. Somehow.

I see what you did there. Also, if Esdese or Leone die at some point, I'm gonna be freaking pissed. Aside from Tatsumi, those two are probably my faves. But considering the average life expectancy of even main characters in this manga, I fear for the future to say the least

Leone already had her arm cut off, though I suppose you could also argue that that means she'll survive. The current battle, at least.

Good thing it's just an arm though. Honestly, I applaud this series for having the balls to kill a character every time they fight (for once, a shonen manga that respects the possibility of death in combat between superpowered psychoes!), BUT STOP TRYING TO KILL OFF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS DAMMIT. YOU ALREADY TOOK BRAHT AND SCHERE! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT YOU SICK BASTARDS?!

Yes. Although honestly, I hope it does end up becoming Dating Catwoman. As scary as it is to say this, Esdese is probably the nicest person we've seen come out of the Capital, barring the Emperor himself. Which says something about the setting in general but still.

And yeah, I'm enjoying it. I kind of wish some of the characters I didn't like would start dying (Mein, Rabac, Akame etc.), but other than that, I am growing quite fond of this series. Question. When did this first start being serialized? (I noticed the scanlation of chapter 4 contained an 'arrow to the knee' joke)

Realy? I though just yesterday that It's exemplar case of inverted Dating Cat Woman. Anyway I don't particulary like Akame either. Leone and Esdesse are more fun.

Yeah. She's received almost zero characterization (at the point I'm at), generally doesn't do anything exciting, or at least hasn't for a long time, and even Leone has had more actual, genuine Ship Tease with Tatsumi then her.

And as for Mein and Rabac... disposable background characters are disposable. On the other hand, Dr. Stylish is amazing.

Really? Hmm... I'm not sure if that works. Aspects of it are quite similar to Dating Catwoman, but when I try breaking down that trope and applying (or inverting) it here, it does not quite add up.

Yeah. This seems more like "Dating Catwoman waiting to happen" or perhaps "a Deconstruction of Dating Catwoman". Honestly, I'm tempted to think it's the former (admittedly obvious bias ho!), but the latter is also possible.
