Never be normal. You know, this question just popped into my mind while reading a long doujinshi about a Japanese princess from the Edo period (well, technically a daimyo's daughter, and thus a noblewoman)... Which Japanese Fairy Tale could be a good candidate for introducing a new Disney Princess?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.I've begun to wonder why they bother to wait until they have another movie to draw on before adding to the lineup. I mean, it's not like the characters are portrayed anything like they were in their respective films—in fact, they're barely portrayed at all. More like...drawn in a few stock poses.
Seriously—at this point, Disney could just create new Princesses out of whole cloth and add them to the brand. Say, one per year.
Stuff what I do.I've personally always wanted an adaptation of Princess Kaguya.
Don't mind me. I'm just a creepy little lurker.Ah, yes, the snow princess. Nice story, that one, though giving it a happy ending like all of the other Disney Princess stories would necessiate considerable Artistic License.
How about Otohime/Toyotama from the Urashima Taro story?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. My animated woman crush is undoubtably Belle. And though she isn't a Princess, Meg from Hercules is great too, with that film actually being one of my favorites out of the animated canon.
"Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools" - Napoleon BonaparteOkay, so I'm just minding my own business, looking up articles for this new Pakistani cartoon, and then I run into this article and... *deep sigh*
Do people these days really think the characterization of female Disney characters are that shallow?
Don't mind me. I'm just a creepy little lurker.Yes. I mean, when was the last time any Disney Princess merchandise had them doing anything other than stand around and look pretty?
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatAfter watching Tangled today, Rapunzel is officially one of my favorite princesses.
Implications that toxic/cruel family members don't exist in the real world and shouldn't be hard to deal with. Also, what does that have to do with sex anyway? Because Disney has never made male characters deal with it, at least not at a realistic level? (Awesome) side projects notwithstanding.
Also, they clearly didn't watch Beauty and the Beast or Tangled, and apparently think it's bad for a girl to be happily a tomboy or have some sense of self-preservation. Wow.
Ahem.
I like the characters (except maybe Aurora. I do like Cinderella). I like all their movies, though Pocahontas I'm less keen on than the others and firmly believe was the worst animated movie Disney released in 1995. The others were a (Pixar) movie commonly considered great and my personal favorite (DisneyToon) of all time, so...
I agree Mulan should not be a princess and Kida and Elionwy should be, even though Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies, and I didn't care too much for Atlantis: The Lost Empire or The Black Cauldron relatively speaking.
I'd love to see Kida included. The Black Cauldron is a shit movie, though, and Eilonwy is a boring character.
But I'm more interested in why you think Mulan should be dropped. Is it because she's not literally a princess in her movie? Why is that so important? It's not like the Disney Princess brand has much to do with the movies apart from cribbing the characters.
Stuff what I do.See, the thing is, if I ran things, the toy line would have more to do with the movie, and thus the definition would matter. Since Mulan is included, however, I see no reason why Esmerelda or Meg shouldn't also be, since I think she's about as much of a princess as they are.
And if I ran things, it wouldn't be called "Disney Princess" at all—it would be called the Heroines line, and in-movie status would be immaterial.
Stuff what I do.@ Elionwy: Being in a shit movie or a boring as batshit character is never a reason NOT to include a Princess to the lineup.

I'm having to learn to pay the priceMaybe not. But both at once is!
How come no one ever pushes for Tiger Lily to be added? She's even called a princess in the movie, unlike Pocahontas.
Stuff what I do.Is it really that difficult? All characters in the line-up are protagonists (Jasmine is the exception, but she is kind of the secondary protagonist) in movies based on Fairy tales ore fairy tale like stories. The only one who might have a reason to complain is Megara, and she is kind of a villain and just doesn't fit in Disney's idea of a good role model.
Honestly, I never got the discussion...for one, I don't get the need that a character has to be added to the line-up. They are not less for not being part of it. And the merch is dependent more on the success of the character than the line-up anyway.
I thought Meg was only a villain because Hades tricked her into working for him.
I like to keep my audience riveted. He didn't trick her, per se. He gave her a fair deal of trading her soul to him to save her boyfriend, albeit with a continued dismissal of corporate promotion aka letting her go.
It's her douchebag boyfriend that's to blame.
You are displaying abnormally high compulsions to over-analyze works of fiction and media. Diagnosis: TV Tropes Addiction. There were a couple Disney Princess video games, and while looking stuff up about them i noticed something amazing!
The GBA game Disney Princess lets you play as the princesses, and you can fight the villains as the princesses!

The Protomen enhanced my life. Can you make out what all their weapons are?
I saw a gameplay video of Belle's world, and she defeats wolves with snowballs and drops books on Gaston's head.
Apparently Ariel uses Triton's trident, and Cinderella has a dancing minigame against her stepsisters. Jasmine uses a sword, and i THINK Aurora uses a wand. Not sure what Snow White does, though some sprites show her singing.

- Mulan
- Ariel
- Jasmine
- Cinderella

A few of the ladies were given new hairstyles, as well as a few wardrobe adjustments, in 2012. It didn't seem to go over well with some fans.
