Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

I'll try to rejoin in the next day or two. I again have a computer, so it'll be easier to watch.

Curious. If I could find one of the feature films based off the old Peanuts comics (Charlie Brown, Snoopy, etc.) would anyone be interested in watching? I may have found a copy of Bon Voyage Charlie Brown, which I remember from my childhood, and from back when Cartoon Network would show movies on Saturday nights after Toonami.

[up][up]Many people consider "tablets" separate from "computers".

[up]Oh, Charlie Brown. How I hated those specials when I was a kid. I hated the characters, found them boring as hell. I never ever saw the appeal in them at all. I imagine they could be good riffing material for that reason.

Tonight sure is looking pretty fun. I might be missing out on this, but I'll be trying my hardest to try and catch a small part, if anything.

This is certainly something to be looking forward to: Johnny Quest vs. The Cyber Insects (or is that Insecks?).

I won't be here tonight, but I do want to mention that from what I could find, most fans of the original 60s show don't think highly of it. The head writer for the Real Adventures remake considered it (as well as the other Jonny Quest film and the episodes made in the 80s) non-canonical.

I imagine there's a big clash between the 60s show and the 90s show and their fans. The two shows are quite different, after all. The 60s show is more down to earth, while the 90s show throws in that stupid CGI "Questworld" nonsense. There were some truly great episodes of the 90s show though. I hadn't seen the 60s show, other than in snippets.

There's a documentary about the making of it, as the 60s show lasted only one season, but left a big impression on those who really liked it.

Apparently a lot of the fans consider the Real Adventures remake to be about as good as the original show... Admittedly, I prefer the original Jonny Quest if only for the fact it had a better theme.

Not too many people like the episodes produced in the 80s, though, or the two movies made in the 90s.

One thing I'll say is that, from what I understand, Jonny's role in the original 60s cartoon was mostly just to be there and to have a kid dragged along on the adventure, though occasionally he got to do adventurous stuff. Sort of an audience insert for kids watching.

Of course, kids tend to hate when kid characters do nothing, and they often are just fine with watching a show of only adult protagonists. In the 90s cartoon, Jonny and Hadji were aged up, and Jessie, who is introduced in the movie we'll be seeing tonight, was added to the cast. Now older, the kids can do a lot more, which changes the focus of the show. That said, the adults still play a major role, and if anything, are treated as the equals of the kids.

[up][up] This movie, incidentally, has no connection with the 90s cartoon.

Yup. It did introduce Jessie, who in the 90s cartoon was assumed to have "always been there", so to speak.

Tonight it's the long-lost, hard as hell to find Jonny Quest vs the Cyber Insects! It's looking like a fun one. I'll be playing the only findable copy in existence.

Pre-show starting now, and the movie at 8 PM EST.

Come on in!

I apologize for the ass video quality and 320x240 resolution, but this was the only findable copy of the movie in existence. It looks like a copy of a copy of a copy on VHS. Oh well, like I said, I couldn't find any other. And believe me, I'm a major stickler for video quality, so if I could have found better, I would have run with it.

It was pretty hardcore, I must say. One You Have Failed Me henchman very clearly died onscreen. This movie didn't screw around. It's interesting to see how much they made it Darker and Edgier to upgrade it for the 1990s. This was before the Real Adventures series. A lot of creepy organic sci-fi imagery. A magical computer virus. And lots of 90s action. Very 90s, really.

Gotta say this about the villain's plan. Taking over the world, and then attempting to make money from them by selling them ethanol, is a strange plan considering that once part 1 is complete, there's zero need for part 2. And if he keeps killing the henchmen he puts in charge, then why would anyone want to ever work for him? Those who fail or disagree with him in a rude way even when they're right, all get killed. Yes, one onscreen, clearly. What an asshole boss. What is with these dumbass henchpeople who work for bosses who murder their employees? I bet on ratemyboss.com these villains are all getting bad reviews.

I also love how the insects are literally called "assassinoids". Like, that's their actual species.

Anyway, watched by 8-10 people. Got the highest ★★ possible, in that one more vote higher would have pushed it up to a 3. But a 2.5 is a 2.

Also, newly added chat commands: {ice} and {icecube}. {ice} makes things look icy. {icecube} makes them look like they're inside an icecube. (inspired by an event in the movie)

And now I need to update the list of chat commands.

They're trying to outdo themselves and each other. We should start coming up with ideas of what they should make next, and see if they can top our ideas!

Still, a tarantula that contains lava and breathes fire? So we have a fire-breathing spider infestation. And we have a sharktopus invading a mall in Sharktopus 2. It's just hard for me to imagine what could top these ideas.

[up][up]

  • A giant animatronic flying mammal lays waste to parts of Los Angeles after sunset. Call it The Robat.
  • After aliens and their spacecraft armada level Los Angeles to the ground to pave way for a parking lot for all their flying saucers, Earth's mightiest heroes—The Revengers—retaliate and bemoan the collapse of America's entertainment industry.
  • Megarhino vs. Giant Trump
  • A mysterious cosmic ray from space threatens to hit Los Angeles and cause all wood in the city to adopt the qualities of rubber, which would cause some horrific accidents on the Santa Monica pier, and only a high ranking officer from the US Air Force (played by Adam Baldwin) and a chief NASA scientist (Eric Roberts) can do anything about it.

Dragons vs. World War II pilots - oh wait, that already exists. I would actually put that on the same level, in that it's something totally absurd and action movie-ish.

Ghost Shark certainly did everything it could with its premise, and did a great job of it.

I already saw someone else suggest Bears on a Submarine a few years ago.

Something I should start bringing up, beginning a week from today, next Tuesday, August 4th... We're going to be celebrating three (3) whole years synchtubing together from the anniversary of our first gathering and ending on the date of this Thread OP (August 22nd). So glad we've made it.

Anyway, this evening, we'll be looking to line up some mindless action nonsense to teach us the real meaning of Urban Renewall, Mother Fucker! (And we definitely ain't watching Urban Menace)

IMDb Plot Synopsis is as follows:

A wealthy businessman is trying to "convince" the inhabitants of an old neighborhood to abandon their homes in order to build a huge business center there. To achieve his goals, he bribes the police and uses organized bands to intimidate the neighbors. But perhaps this alcoholic ex-cop, Manning, could help them, but how?

The on-point dialogue that made its way into the trailer ain't any bit less stupid, either.

Here is... Private Wars.

[up]Something like that. Much like in previous coven anniversaries, we have our minor holidays and rituals and the rest is just a celebration of everything that best represents our culture. The most important dates, as in prior years, are as follows:

  • August 4th—Day One Day, recognizing when we watched our first movie (Robot Monster) via Gmail Chat with a YouTube video playing in a different tab (Originally 8/4/12).
  • August 7th—Terrible Friday (or: Not Good Friday), recognizing our first planned "big" Friday gathering, which turned out to be Hard Rock Zombies, which was an abysmally bad film. I'm not going to tell you what utterly terrible film I already got in mind for us to suffer through a second time this year, but I can promise it will be "mercifully" short (Original date 8/10/12).
  • August 10th—Tre Day, remembering the Monday following Terrible Friday when the original Synchtube site was recommended to us, after roughly a week of crudely relying on Gmail Chat boxes and separate YouTube tabs. The date honors the name of the troper who made this recommendation and has no film significance (Original date 8/13/12).
  • August 15th—Starcrash Saturday, recognizing the Saturday following Tre Day marking the first time our group observed the most unbelievably awful movie that all other movies seen here are measured against to this day (Original date 8/18/12)
  • August 19th—Weng Weng Wednesday, recognizing our first viewing of The Impossible Kid on an indeterminable date between the Original Starcrash Saturday and OP Day.
  • August 22nd—OP Day, celebrating our establishment as a full-fledged Troper Coven on 8/22/12.

Other Holidays in the weeks following this include Barbarian Brothers Day (September 16th) and Kung Fu Friday Day (originally October 12th, but will probably be recognized on October 9th this year to celebrate on a Friday).
