Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

I encourage you to take a look at Bunker Palace Hôtel, which was Bilal's directorial debut, and is not only his best work by far, but a genuinely great (if slow-paced) film in general, with an awesome dieselpunk aesthetic and a befittingly spiteful (i.e. French evil grin ) sense of humour.

[up]Just for shits and giggles, I'm gonna take the piss out of what you said and jokingly comment that Cradle of Fear must've had a larger budget. In all honesty, though, I'll keep an eye out for this.

Anyway, tonight we'll be revisiting the great 90's anthology horror flick Body Bags, from directors John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper, and featuring the likes of Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine, Deborah Harry, Stacy Keach, and Twiggy!

Lovely.

While being annoyed that strikethrough had somehow stopped working in the Cytube, I tried to fix it (and succeeded), and then got the idea to add extra ways to mess with text. Ultimately, I decided on colors. It took me numerous tries, as many HTML codes are rejected, but are apparently accepted if you bury them within the <span> command. I later added other features as well, such as big and small font, or marquee.

In many cases, if you see someone else do the fancy font or effect, you can hover your mouse cursor over it and it will show you what you need to type to do the same effect yourself. It would help to remember that.

With help from a coder, I figured out a much simpler way to let you choose any named color! Try the following, and remember that you can enter any HTML-recognized color as a substitute for the color in the examples:

  • {c:red} whatever text {/c}

To do text inside a box, do the following:

  • {box:yellow} whatever text {/box}

Want a dotted line box? Then it's this:

  • {dbox:silver} whatever text {/dbox}

For any color background with black text, you can use this code:

  • {b:orange} whatever text {/b}

You can make the text have a background glow of any color. Try the following:

  • {g:skyblue} whatever text {/g}

In addition, you can make the text itself both lit up and glowy. Try this:

  • {cg:seagreen} whatever text {/cg}

One of the odder features is that you can make the text both lit up with a dark shadow on a same-colored background. Try this:

  • {i:purple} whatever text {/i}

For all fancy text effects, realize that you need to enclose the text inbetween an opening and closing effect, with a slash preceding the closing effect, like this:

  • {texteffect} whatever text {/texteffect}
DO NOT FORGET THE SLASH! /

The commands for special colored backgrounds are:

  • {blood} - dark red background with bright red text
  • {hollywood} or {hw} - the Orange/Blue Contrast that Hollywood loves so much

For fancified themed text, unique fonts, and weird effects on typing:

  • {science} - Blue-Tinted glowy text in Small Caps
  • {holy} - yellow-tinted glowing text in a different font
  • {horror} or {h} - red glow behind normal colored words
  • {dead} or {d} - dark red glow behind bright red words
  • {bloody} - blood-stained (even has a dark red "trail" behind it) text in cursive, which looks awesome
  • {halloween} - similar to bloody, but orange
  • {zombie} or {z} - a sickly green glow behind normal colored words, using a twisted font (the font may look normal for some people)
  • {shit} - shit text (brown, Comic Sans, and bold), with some actual shit next to it
  • {extreme} or {x} - red letters, yellow glow, italicized, all capital letters no matter what, and an exclamation point no matter what
  • {grunge} - grungy font, with salmon text on green background
  • {hipster} - tall, skinny hipster font with the hipsterish indianred color, and a pair of glasses
  • {goth} - white on black background (I realize some people have their settings for the chatroom that way anyway) with a twisted, handwriting-esque font
  • {nick} - Nickelodeon-themed font in Comic Sans orange
  • {neon} - glowing neon sign (light green glow, all capital letters, bold)
  • {neonoff} or {noff} - same as above but not glowing. Could be combined with {neon} to create the effect of a sign where not all of the letters are working
  • {robot) - glowing green text, like coming from a robot
  • {serif} - different font
  • {script} - cursive handwriting effect
  • {comic} - the dreaded Comic Sans
  • {ice} - makes text look icy and cold
  • {icecube} - makes whatever you type (including symbols) appear to be inside an icecube
  • {smallcaps} or {sc} - Your writing looks Like This
  • {backwards} or {bw} - your writing is backwards

I figured that, because of the types of movies we watch, these would be the most appropriate color effects to add. If you have any suggestions for others that would fit, let me know.

There's other commands as well for doing other fancy things with text.

Changing size:

  • {small} or {s}
  • {tiny} or {t} - smaller than small

A new way to change text size allows for exact numbers 1-19. The code is

  • {s:7} whatever text {/s} where "7" is replaced with any number from 1-19. Why the number limit? To prevent massive text spam, of course!

Flying across the screen or flying in:

  • {left} or {l} - this is probably the most useful. It flies to the left, from the right
  • {right} - the opposite

The following do NOT require a slash at the end, and are standalone things that can be typed.

I made it easier to type Unicode symbols or even ASCII art, like the following (note, some will be larger and easier to see in the chat):

  • {heart} for ♥
  • {diamond} for ♦
  • {spade} for ♠
  • {club} for ♣
  • {love} for
  • {music} or {muzak} for ♫
  • {male} for ♂
  • {female} for ♀
  • {star} for ★
  • {skull} for ☠
  • {kiss} for 💋 (does not display correctly for some people)
  • {notequal} for ≠
  • {swastika} for 卐
  • {cross} for ✝
  • {crescent} for ☪
  • {starofdavid} for ✡
  • {middlefinger} or {fuckyou} for 凸(-_-)凸
  • {present} or {gift} for (´・ω・)っ由
  • {tableflip} or {table} for (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
  • {face} for ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
  • {shades} for (⌐■_■)
  • {headphones} for d(-_-)b
  • {point} or {pt} or {pp} or {P} for ☞ finger pointing right (it's bigger in the actual chat, don't worry)
  • {pointleft} or {leftpoint} or {tniop} or {tp} for same, except pointing left
  • {1:00} through {12:00} or {1} through {12} for clocks showing each of those times (only the "o'clock" times)
  • {infinity} for ∞
  • {degree} for °
  • {fist} or {brofist} or {punch} for 👊
  • {gem} or {jewel} for 💎
  • {ship} for 🚢
  • {plane} or {airplane} for ✈
  • {swords} for ⚔
  • {alien} for 👽
  • {soccer} for ⚽
  • {baseball} for ⚾
  • {tennis} for 🎾
  • {basketball} for 🏀
  • {crystalball} for 🔮
  • {sax} or {saxophone} for 🎷
  • {violin} for 🎻
  • {bike} or {bicycle} for 🚲
  • {water} for 🌊
  • {pencil} for ✎
  • {recycle} for ♲
  • {coffee} for ☕

These do NOT require a slash / at the end. Please don't use one for these.

I added Wingdings and Webdings as well! TV Tropes can't display them, but their name makes it clear what they are:

Weather

  • {sunny}
  • {cloudy}
  • {rainy}
  • {stormy}
  • {tornado}
  • {moon}
Animals (some are actually Unicode instead of Wingdings/Webdings)
  • {cat}
  • {dog}
  • {fish}
  • {bird}
  • {squirrel}
  • {dove}
  • {elephant}
  • {horse}
  • {snail}
  • {hamster}
  • {rabbit}
  • {snake}
  • {spider}
  • {spiderweb}
Media
  • {projector} - a film projector
  • {movie} or {clapboard}
  • {controller} or {videogame} or {game}
  • {phone}
  • {play} - the Comedy and Tragedy masks, used to represent plays
Hand Gestures
  • {halt} or {wave} - it's officially called "halt", yet it looks more like a hand waving
  • {thumbsup} or {up}
  • {thumbsdown} or {down}
  • {ok} or {okay} - a hand gesture that means "okay"
Miscellaneous
  • {syringe}
  • {drink}
  • {college} or {graduate}
  • {food}
  • {bed}
  • {lamp} or {lampcouch} or {couchlamp}
  • {trophy}
  • {glasses} - think hipster glasses
  • {cool} - shades
  • {nopirates} - why does this even exist?? It's a pirate behind a No symbol
  • {earth} - Earth showing the Americas
  • {earth2} - Earth showing Africa and Western Europe
  • {earth3} - Earth showing Eastern Europe, Asia and Australia
  • {yell} or {horn}
  • {ribbon}
  • {eye}

These also do NOT require a slash / at the end. Please don't use one for these.

Other miscellany:

  • {rainbow} - the word "Rainbow" (it will always be capitalized) in rainbow colors
  • {rainbowflag} or {pride} - the rainbow flag
  • {america} - "America" in American colors
  • {murica} - "Murica" in American colors
  • {italy}/{germany}/{france}/{ireland}/{japan}/{turkey}/{england}/{vietnam} - the flag of the appropriate country, or at least my best attempt to recreate it in HTML and Unicode. Countries like Germany have their flag changed to vertical, because horizontal is impossible

These also do NOT require a slash / at the end. Please don't use one for these.

Treat it like you would HTML code, and remember it's curly braces { } instead of square brackets, greater-than and less-then, or parentheses (the site rejected all those). And don't forget the slash / at the end when it comes to text commands! {c:red} {/c} The commands can be combined as well.

Anyway, this should serve as a handy reference to the many fun things you can do with text in the chat.

For emotes, you can simply click the "Emote List" button to see them all. Moving your mouse cursor over them shows what you need to type in order to use the emote in the chat.

If you have any requests for new features, let me know and I'll see what I can do!! If I add any new features, or if any new emotes are added, I'll update this post.

[up]Nice work, man.

Anyway, tonight we'll be revisiting the, ahem, *killer classic* Demon Island— which we greatly prefer to remember by its alternate title Piñata: Survival Island.

Yes, for anyone unfamiliar with this movie, the evil monster offing sexy, young people in tonight's movie is indeed a demonic piñata. Check with the IMDb page, if you don't believe me.

Teens trapped on an island are haunted by a demon hidden inside...a pinata.

And if you still can't believe this, get a load of the violence that we converted into .gifs the last time we saw this.

Alright, let's get this started.

Right this moment, we got Retsupurae playing Sonic 06, we got Lowtax playing Clyde the Hedgehog 2014, and something else I made to look back on Mark Hamill being a crazy person.

Then, at the top of the coming, we got the return of the killer piñata demon in Piñata: Survival Island. Yes, tell all your friends right this very minute that there exists a movie about a killer piñata.

[up]Basically, Hopeless shared a BNP campaign video in the chat for laughs last night, and thanks to my own morbid curiosity, got to wondering what awful things awful people must have been saying about it on YouTube itself. While most commenters were (thankfully) sensible, ordinary folk, there were a handful of curious remarks, including one from a person who wish he could've voted for BNP but was "sadly" in America. And so the mind wonders: Did I find (A) a passionate British nationalist who left the UK, (B) the most pathetic American Anglophile in existence, or (C) an uninformed "Tea Partier" who simply has a shared hatred for immigrants and Muslims?

Anyway, enough about that. Really.

Right now, we got more of the world's worst CGI and Bad Influence and some other stupid stuff.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Reb Brown tells us about Disneyland in Noah Antwiler's personal favorite Strike Commando.

Okay, I reprogrammed the chat room's fancy macros so they're way easier to use now.

Instead of having to memorize weird strings, you now change colors simply by entering {color}whatever text{/color} like that.

Replace "color" with the appropriate color, like {blue} or {cinnamon}.

The known colors are {red}, {orange}, {yellow}, {green}, {blue}, {darkblue}, {purple}, {magenta}, {violet}, {pink}, {cinnamon}, {brown}, {white}, {black}, {gold}, {silver} and {crimson}. For colored backgrounds, there's {goldback}, {evil} and {shit}.

In addition to that, the other fancy commands are easier to use as well.

{large} for large text, {small} for small, {fabulous} for fabulous sparkly text, and finally, you can have a message fly across the screen with {left}. (there's also {right}, {up} and {down}, but I imagine they will be less useful)

Treat it like you would HTML code, and remember it's radar brackets {} instead of square or regular (the site rejected both). And don't forget the slash / at the end. {red} {/red} The commands can be combined: for example, {left}{red}{fabulous}flying fabuloooous {large}blood{/large}{/fabulous}{/red}{/left} will result in red words with sparkly background flying across the screen with the word "blood" enlarged.

Okay. Finally. This should be a lot easier to use and hopefully encourage some creative use of these text codes in the chat. Now that I've created a system that is ironically less autistic than the previous. [lol] (I have N-Word Privileges)

For my next project, I might create shortcuts so you'd only have to type {r} instead of {red}, or something.
