Ok, first this:

If an idea seems to be stealing the plot/premise/pitch of another idea, but the characters and setting are different, it's Whole-Plot Reference.

should become:

As a setting trope, this is distinct from Whole-Plot Reference. The two may overlap, but it is possible to be either one without being both. For example, The Flintstones is, by Word of God, The Honeymooners recycled in the Stone Age, but is not a Whole-Plot Reference.

I also suggest splitting the following into two separate points:

If an idea seems to be ripping off another idea, it's Better by a Different Name. It needs to be blatant in its advertising that it is a copy for it to count. You could argue that "Eragon was better when it was called Star Wars" but since nothing ever advertises the similarities, it doesn't count as this.

There's two different issues there:

  • If an idea seems to be ripping off another work, it's Better by a Different Name. If you were to claim that "Eragon was better when it was called Star Wars", that would simply not be an example of this trope. No setting is mentioned.
  • It needs to be blatant in its advertising that it is a copy for it to count. Taking the previous example: even if you were to rephrase that as "Eragon is Star Wars recycled in a Standard Fantasy Setting", it would still not be a valid example, because nothing ever advertises the similarities.

I second closing the topic.

[up][up]I would agree with the first idea, but with the second I need some quoteblocking.

[up]I was suggesting replacing the one bullet point (quoted in my third quoteblock) with the two bullet points at the bottom. Imagine a quoteblock around those two bullet points if it helps. (Everything I was discussing there is bulleted on the page.)

A shorter version of your proposed changes is fine for me.

I'm mostly concerned about the first one (about Whole-Plot Reference). If you're not comfortable with the second, I'm willing to let it slide. It's much less important.

Beside the issue in the last few posts, I still see this:

About #1 and #2: We do many tropes without citations, even if they rely on authorial intent. And nobody has shown a problem there anyway.

About #3: Why?

About #4: Already thumbed-down. Also, if you have to say "Is it duplicate to several tropes?" then there is a good chance you are wrong.

[up][up]About the second... the third "common thing to avoid" described in the Recycled In Space page is "It needs to be blatant in its advertising that it is a copy for it to count. You could argue that "Eragon was better when it was called Star Wars" but since nothing ever advertises the similarities, it doesn't count as this."

Last call for objections to my first change proposed in post 51, which is unopposed so far.

(I'll leave out the other change, since it seems both more controversial and less necessary.)

Ok, I made that first change, and didn't bother with the second. As far as I'm concerned, there's no other issues that really need repair shop attention. Cleanup, assuming any is needed, is something that can always be done at any time. Unless someone else has an issue, I move to close the thread.

Seems there's no further issue here (assuming there was one to begin with).

Agree with closing.

Why do you think there's no issue left?
