Quest 64 for me, of course.
The simple yet complex customization, that different ways to play. So basic, yet so alluring...
Just wait till the Wii U/etc. is released. Game Cube will be retro. Hell, the GBA is retro too.
Quest 64 threadHey, Game Cube's safe for now, hovering in that backwards-compatible limbo between "Retro" and "Modern"
I remember Quest64. I never owned a 64 myself, and when I was at my friend's we usually played Perfect Dark or Mario Party. But I did have a go at it once, and it weirded me out how some things just didn't work the way I expected them too. Unlike my friends, my PS 1 upbringing made me a RPG vet comparably speaking.
Bleye knows Sabers.Hard to believe the systems I grew up with (GBC and GCN) are either retro or are going to be pretty soon.
I recall my first game for each, Pokemon Blue and Pikmin 1. Sadly I recently went back and played the former and it just doesn't hold up very well. The second is still as amazing as I remember though.
Okay people, let's revive this thing!
I wanted to start a Retro/Indie Gaming thread, so I punched Retro in the "search forum titles" thingy and this one came up, automatically deeming the creation of a new one redundant.
Anyway, I hope Shirow Shirow will be coming back -being the thread starter and all- but for now, let's reset!
Here are some titles that I've been re-playing recently:
- Cave Story. -An indie game by Studio Pixel
- EVO Search For Eden. -SNES
- Metal Slug 3. -Neo Geo
- Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. -Game Boy
I love old school games, I know you do too! Have you been playing anything cool lately? Have you unearthed any overlooked gems we should know about? Have you developed any games? What's your Top 5?
Jump in and have fun!
Note: Please make sure to check the rules before posting.

Excuse me while I
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Pimp some of my recent shit with my friend's show.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Funny, I'm currently on a retro binge at the moment. Just finished Abe's Exoddus and am currently moving on to some good old vintage Planescape Torment and Neverwinter Nights 2. Will probably get the early Rayman series a buy if current gaming still doesn't have much to offer or the games I really want are still not on sale.
I've been retro-gaming a lot as well, lately, thanks to the Ultimate RPG Challenge (check out the link in my signature). We're currently playing the RPGs of 1988-89, so I've been playing the SNES-version of Dragon Quest III and The Final Fantasy Legend for Gameboy.
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!@Nifty: Speaking of Abe, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is one of my favorite games ever. Plus I just found my old Rayman 2: The Great Escape copy for the PC, and I'll be giving it a go pretty soon; hope it still works. I know it's not exactly considered canon, but those robotic pirates are made of awesome!
@Lemurian: The SNES version of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is on my to do list. Come to think of it, Earth Bound deserves re-playing too.

Yay Dragon Quest! I've been playing IV on the DS, which I believe is largely a port of the PSX version. So it's a re-release of a re-release. I pity the poor fools playing the NES version and having to fight with the party AI, although at least they don't have to deal with a cruddy tacked-on DS wireless feature that would only work if you live in Tokyo.
I also grabbed a copy of Xenogears... And it's original Japanese. Hardcore!
Bleye knows Sabers.Ah, those were my Crash Bandicoot - Final Fantasy VII days, I never played Xenogears. Looks interesting though, I bet tracking down a copy won't be too hard. I don't speak Japanese though, so I guess I'll look for the PAL version.

You know what's funny about Crash Bandicoot? I've never heard someone say they played the first game. Granted, it's probably inevitable now that I've said that. But everyone who had a PSX seemed to have a copy of Crash Bandicoot 2 and plenty of people had Crash Bandicoot 3 but noooobody had ever played the first Crash Bandicoot. I only ever saw it once at a rental store too.
I never did manage to get all those gems...
Bleye knows Sabers.Hate to break it to you, but Xenogears never made it to Europe.
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!@Shirow Shirow: No way! Every single Crash game was all the rage back then, over here at least. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been over 15 years after all, but I think they sold PSX bundled with Crash 1 at some point or another.
@Lemurian: Too bad. I guess I'll have to get to it through other means...

Every time is a good time for Metal Slug.
...Let us in...Xenogears never got OFFICIALLY to Europe. Thanks to Square and Sony's refusal to translate the game into continental European languages.
But I still have my copy. Black Disc version and all.
Damn straight.
That track is kickass. Gotta love MG 3. ZOMBIES AND MONKEYS YEAHAH. War's never been so much fun.
Zio... Gias... I've gotten to the point where I uppercutted a T-Rex with my giant robot. My day was complete.

Bleye knows Sabers.^^ Waitwaitwait, there really are PAL-versions of the disc?
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia! Is it just me, or does Heart of Darkness actually share some similarities with Another World?
In other news, I discovered the Ducktales Remastered thread yesterday, and boy was that trailer awesome!
Also, being a Nintendo kid, I was thinking of buying a Wii U for the Virtual Console feature alone. Is it worth it?

Well, I thought it was made in the style of that game.
Anyways, speaking of retro, who here remembers Swagman?
Long live Cinematech. FC:0259-0435-4987Nope. Xenogears never got a PAL release.
I have a NTSC U/C PS 2 which I can legitimately play my NTSC U/C games on. Handy as. Particularly since I have Final Fantasy IX, Xenosaga, Legend of Mana and so on.
Over the last few months, my Skype friends and I (The Lovable Box of Idiots) have been playing a bunch of retro games "together" (as in, we all play them separately, but talk about them as we play, helping each other out if needed).
So far, we've played:
- All three NES Super Mario Bros games (and World.)
- Super Mario Land, The sequel, and the original Wario Land.
- The Legend Of Zelda I (which was the first time any of us had beaten the game)
- Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.
Now we're kinda stuck on what to play now. We want it to be a game by Rare, but we can't decide between Banjo Kazooie, Conkers Bad Fur Day, or Jet Force Gemini. Also, I wanna play the NES Punch Out, Kid Icarus, or Wario Land II with them, but I've picked out most of the games so far (except Metroid and the Rare titles) and I feel that they should pick some now.
Overall, it's been a lot of fun. We're all getting to play and beat games we never have, and kinda bonding with each other at the same time.

Weird in a Can (updated M-F)@Dr. Furball: That's awesome! Why don't you try Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest? It's a Rare game, plus, achieving 100% Completion is really hard.
@Nyarly: Ha! Thanks.
There's been a lot of doom and gloom in the industry lately, so why don't we all take a step back and admire some of the games that came out a couple generations ago? Don't just gaze back with your Nostalgia Filter set to maximum power, plug in some older games and see how they hold up today!
With digital re-releases, abandonware piling up, Indie games going Retraux left and right
and rampant software piracyall available to us you might say it's never been a better time to enjoy the classics. Except maybe when the classics where first released. There's plenty of things only modern games can offer, but at the end of the day it's gameplay that makes a game. And yes people, the original Playstation and the Nintendo64 count as retro now. I don't care how old that makes you feel.
Personally, I've been playing some Turrican. Who says a Space Marine needs to be gritty?
