Since we're on a new page of discussion, some courtesy links: the proposed rewrites are in posts 129 and 140.
They're both by me, so I'm pretty neutral. Septimus seems to favor 140, Johnnye; 129. Some more opinions would be really helpful. I think I might lean slightly more towards 140 myself.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee. Those descriptions sound pretty good to me; only thing I'd add is a brief demonstrative example of the Alice and Bob variety to give an idea of what you mean. Other than that, I'd say go for it.
"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoI'm pleased you like them, but was really hoping for you to express a preference for one over the other, since we can't use both. :)
I am extremely reluctant to try to create an Alice and Bob example, because I think this trope is broad enough that any such example would either be misleadingly narrow or much too long. Example As Thesis and Wall of Text are both bad things.
But if you want to try to write up an Alice and Bob example, we can at least consider whether it's worth adding.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee. Please no Alice and Bob junk. These things always take much space that could be left to an actual description.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThey both seem pretty much the same to me, differing only by a few words.
As for an example, I was thinking something like this:
I think it already makes that point well enough. Listing more things that could appear in such a work just gets silly after a while.
Anyway, the crowner is starting to look pretty stable, so we should probably make some sort of decision soon. I'm inclined to go with the description in 140, just because it's my second attempt.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Bump. Is it time to call this?
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Yes. It's no longer on Latest Vote Catchers - the venue I have started to use to tell whether a crowner is stable.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWorld Of Weirdness is going to cause a lot of misapplied examples potentially. People will think the trope is used to describe "weird" settings when we are trying to give it a more specific definition. In my opinion it should be eliminated as a possibility.
Also the name is not fun. "Planet Eris" was a bad name, but at least it had character.
Keep it breezy! The first is precisely my problem with it. It's concise and (slightly) witty, but far too vague.

The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableDo you have a better name?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI did. Smorgasbord Setting is the only one that seems to still be competitive, though.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableFor the record, I upvoted both green options because of the vagueness concerns.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman"Smorgasbord Setting" works. It's a clever name and would probably lead to less misapplied examples.
Alternatively, "World of Odds and Ends" and "World Of Miscellany" hits the nail on the head (although they are not as fun).

Keep it breezy!Did we never come to a consensus to rename this trope?
Keep it breezy!Yes we did, months ago. I think the current attached crowner is to pick a name, it has just never been called.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Yep. Here.
For the record:
- World of Weirdness stands as 23-9.
- Smorgasbord Setting stands as 15-4.
Can we have one last vote between Smorgasbord Setting and World of Weirdness? The latter is not as clever of a name as the former.
Keep it breezy!23-9 should be sufficient consensus to rename, wouldn't it?
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Yes. What sort of vote?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThis is true, but as I said in 160, World Of Weirdness is not a very good name. The runner-up, Smorgasbord Setting, is much better.
Vote by post. Choose either World of Weirdness or Smorgasbord setting. The name that gets more votes than the other is what Planet Eris gets renamed to. Set a date for when voting ends; no more than a few days.

Keep it breezy!Excuse me, but if we just had a months-long crowner with several dozen participants and a clear outcome, why exactly would we want to do it all over again just because someone doesn't like the outcome?
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Clear outcome? One has more votes but the other has more consensus.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'll just quote myself:
''World Of Weirdness is going to cause a lot of misapplied examples potentially. People will think the trope is used to describe "weird" settings when we are trying to give it a more specific definition. In my opinion it should be eliminated as a possibility.
Also the name is not fun. "Planet Eris" was a bad name, but at least it had character."''
I have not read a compelling argument in favor of World of Weirdness. Smorgasbord Setting, on the other hand, leaves far less room for misapplied examples and is a clever name.
As I do realize my opinions do not reflect everyone else's so I would rather put it to a final vote instead of filibustering the page from ever being renamed. I know I am asking for a few more days to fix the article but if we decide on Smorgasbord Setting instead of World of Weirdness it would work out much better in the long run.

Keep it breezy!
Crown Description:
Here are the short definitions that tropers proposed in this thread for Planet Eris. To get an idea of where we should be going with Planet Eris, please vote for the ones you like, and against the ones you disagree with. These options should not be considered mutually exclusive.
140 is good for me.
