All-Purpose Namespace Icon Thread: Sandbox.Namespace Icons

Go To

This thread deals with all issues concerning the icons used for namespaces and their buttons, including proposals for icons for new namespaces and bugs with existing icons.

When submitting an icon, the icon images should be exactly 16x16 png with a transparent background. A gif can also be used, but png is usually better. Also, the naming convention is important. It should be the namespace in lowercase.

I am compiling a list of namespaces that need icons, and icons for those name spaces. This would be preferred to be done quickly because I've convinced Eddie to hook them up when I get them complied. I will be editing the OP as we go.

NOTE: Use the link to the sandbox in the thread title to see what still needs to be decided on.

Subpages that still need icons:

  • Animation/
  • FanWorks/
  • Manhua/
  • Sandbox/
  • Timeline/

Subpages that already have icons hooked up (please note, this list has been collapsed into a note, so that the floating header post isn't huge)

Minir point, but since it was decided ( https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13773674250A05852900&page=6 ) to merge Synopsis and Recap, the Synopsis namespace no longer needs an icon.

...is there a particular reason why the Discussion icons no longer differentiate between a discussion page that has remarks and one that's completely blank anymore?

Asking this again, since the question seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle.

The ideal art for that button would be for it to "light up" for a troper if there was something new for that troper. That will be going in soon.

I've asked for a crowner on the Useful Notes namespace icon, since there are now 2 icons.

In the meantime, I'll post a review of the thread in case any passing admin is looking for it:

  • Icons that are waiting for implementation (except for those in m8e's zip) are Headscratchers/, ImageLinks/, PlayingWith, ReferencedBy/, TropeCo/ and Wiki/. They should also be now compliant entirely with the requirements in the OP.
  • Still-to-be discussed icons are Animation/, FanWorks/, Manhua/, Sandbox/, Timeline/ and UsefulNotes/.
  • One other suggestion posted in the thread is that the Recent Edit pages ought to display the new icons.

I just noticed this: if a troper has the same name as a work, and s/he has created a Troper page, it appears as a tab under the work's page. Here's an example:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Tropers/Arrow

Since the troper page has nothing to do with the work, this seems like something that should be fixed?

I'll ask this again, because I'm not sure if any admin noticed my previous post, and the problem still exists.

Not sure that's any more of a problem than two unrelated works having the same name, like Dead Or Alive.

Well yeah, that's a part of the same problem... Since the tabs don't disambiguate in any way, the book called Dead or Alive is on the same row of tabs as the video game Dead or Alive, which gives the impression that they're part of the same franchise, even though they have nothing to do with each other.

I don't think this problem existed before, because IIRC in the past the tab row didn't show tabs for works in different media that have the same name. I guess this becomes problematic if you want to include works that are part of the same franchise on the same tab row... But the troper problem at least should be easily corrected, just don't include the troper tab on the tab row, I can't think of any situation where doing that would be necessary.

I've noticed this problem for some time. For example, Two Worlds seems to be a video game, Machinima, and fan fic, all with nothing to do with each other. This really becomes a problem when you have sub pages like characters or YMMV, where they need distinction.

The case of a page showing up for a troper who has the same name as a work is sufficiently rare that it doesn't hurt anything.

The ambiguity thing with regard to subpages is worth fixing. The ideal system (which is discussed here) would know which page it was a subpage of by something other than the title.

I get that this is not a big problem, but on on the other hand it should be pretty easy to fix, just change it that the troper tabs never show on the tab row. Or is there some situation where they should show there?

Honestly, to me, it isn't just "not a big problem", it isn't a problem at all.

I personally believe it's more important to replace the icons in the edit lists.

Update:

  • Animation/, Manhua/ and Timeline/ still need icons.
  • FanWorks/ and Sandbox/ each have an icon suggestion.
  • This list and the ones here still only show the old icons.

Methinks that we should ask Ed to implement the recently-chosen icons and to update the latter two lists as well - but in the meantime, do we have enough agreement on Sandbox/?

Are you still taking suggestions for possible future icons? Because I think Narm may benefit from having one.

We're looking for icons for namespaces, not tropes.

Only because it's a trope split into subpages by medium. Do you want to make an icon for every trope that had to be split that way? Expy is split up similarly (eg: Expy.Video Games); does Expy deserve a namespace icon?

The line has to be drawn somewhere; I suppose now's as good a time as any to argue where, exactly.
