This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

I've removed them. Hope that was the right thing.

Pot holes aren't allowed in page quotes except for very special circumstances, so that was the right call regardless of any other changes needed.

Well, I'm personally torn on the issue. I see how some might think it's covered by Rule of Funny — it is appealing that even a few sentences contain so many tropes (Troperiffic). I never add those and don't like them, but am too much of a wuss to delete them without asking the community for some kind of back-up.

[up] Da's coo'. I notice that tropers can get a little prissy at you when you ask for permission to do something that's specifically allowed (and in fact encouraged) by site policy, but to be perfectly honest, I'd rather be safe than sorry. If I have any doubt at all, I ask. Then 9 people bitch at me for asking, and one person actually answers the question and says it's okay, and I do it, and all is well.

I ask for the visual record that, yeah, that's fine to do. It's something to point to if someone tries to make a fuss later.

And sometimes I find out that in a particular case, something else will work better than what I alone thought.

[up]I think it works better on Non-Action Guy than Lesser Star. I recommend replacing Lesser Star's quote with the TMNT quote from the quotes page, since it's pretty much the only quote on there that isn't complaining.

I don't like Background Music Override's quote. Not only is it gushing, I really don't like the idea of quoting one of our own wiki pages, especially not an Awesome Music page.

[up] Agreed. I don't know if there's anything in the policy about it, but it seems (A) masturbatory, (B) self-congratulatory, and (C) supremely narcissistic for TV Tropes to quote itself, regardless of who actually composed the quote.

I'm never in favor of a page quote or an entry on a quotes page being a quote from a troper and/or wiki page. Ever.

Unless said troper also has works out there to quote. tongue But not stuff from the site itself.

To continue from the previous discussion, I think the following would work for Space Whale Aesop and Fantastic Aesop, respectively.

"The moral of this story is 'Never think, or else the secret police might catch you and kill you no matter what.' If it's good for the kids, it's good for the adults!"

"The moral of the story is real good on this one - it's 'Don't be unlucky and be a dog.' ...Thassa good one."

Not sure the quote on People Sit On Chairs is a good one, since we have The South Paw. Then what the quote refers to seems to be more Square Peg Round Trope.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

[up] That quote would be terrible for The South Paw. A quote for that page would have to be about left-handedness in some way, not merely mentioning the fact that a character in an anime is left-handed.

Good God, The South Paw has got to be one of the most utterly awful names I've seen on this site in a long time.

But regardless, that quote makes much more sense for People Sit On Chairs.

[up] Well, "Southpaw" is an extremely common English-language euphemism for a left-handed person. I have no idea if the explanation for the term's origin given on the trope description is accurate, but the term itself is very widely used.

I'm not really sure that "a character is left-handed" is much of a trope, but if it is, I see no issue with the name.

Re: the quote, we've already taken issue in the past with TV Tropes quoting itself, and I don't think that quote would be appropriate on either page for that reason.

Speaking as a left-handed person, I've literally never heard that term in my entire life.

I don't know what to tell you, other than that this might be a case of inverted Fan Myopia, because I'm very confident in saying the vast majority of English-speakers are familiar with the term. I'm pretty sure even European English-speakers are typically familiar with it, although it's probably more prevalent in the US.

I'm from the US, and have lived in two fairly different parts of the country. I feel like I can say with equal assurance that it's not a common term, although I could believe it used to be.

If you feel that strongly about it, I guess it could be put to a vote. This isn't really the place for that, though.

Edit: Also, I'm left-handed too, and I don't really see what that has to do with knowing a euphemism.

Well, since it refers to left-handed people, you'd think I'd be more likely than a right-handed person to have heard it before (and I'm not exaggerating when I used the word "never"; the whole reason I'm complaining is because I clicked on the link just now to figure out what it was).

But you're right in that it's off-topic.

I dunno. From my perspective, being left-handed seems like a way bigger deal to right-handed people. I don't even notice what hand people write with, but half the time when people see me signing something they start gushing, "Oh wow, you're left-handed?" like it's some kind of magical talent. So I wouldn't be surprised if righties were more familiar with it just by virtue of the fact that they're so interested in it and would be more likely to use it.

I don't refer to myself as a southpaw. I don't refer to my handedness as anything unless I'm asked, and then I say in a bored voice, "Yes, I'm left-handed, now leave me alone."

Oops. I didn't mean that quote should be on The South Paw. I meant that since being left handed is a trope, but the quote used on People Sit On Chairs isn't an example of the trope for being left handed, that quote is more Not An Example than Not A Trope.

As in I'm stating I think People Sit On Chairs needs a new quote.

Being left-handed by itself isn't a trope. The South Paw is for cases of it being treated as relevant to the story.

Two separate items to address :

1)Re:Left-Handed quote on PSOC. Just because we have a Southpaw trope, that doesn't mean that Nanoha being a lefty can't count as PSOC. Southpaw is supposed to be when being a lefty has narrative significance - though it happens to be in TRS at the moment due to rampant misuse as a list of "This character is a lefty". Nanoha's lefty status has no such significance, which does in fact make it PSOC. Please read the 2nd paragraph of the PSOC page - the existence of tropes where Chairs have narrative significance doesn't in anyway invalidate PSOC itself. The only issue here is a (relatively common) misunderstanding of what PSOC is all about. The quote is fine.

2)We've got almost duplicate quotes on Expendable Alternate Universe and Up the Real Rabbit Hole. Of course, the fact that the tropes themselves are almost identical doesn't help.

"Ours is the only reality of consequence."

and

"As I said, O'Neill, ours is the only reality of consequence."

[up]Okay, see your point for the PSOC quote.

And perhaps those tropes should be taken to TRS.
