Badass tropes - now on: Action Girl

Go To

Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.

Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.

Noted Problems include:

  • Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
  • Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
  • Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.

Suggested things to do include:

  • Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
  • Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
  • Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.

There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

Badass Bureaucrat needs to go to TRS. Bystander and Bookworm both can stay, although Bookworm may want a rename. Top 2 obviously go with the "Badassness establishing stuff" category.

[up]Agreed. I personally favor a Trope Transplant for Badass Bureaucrat (assuming the trope it sounds like actually exists), but we'll see what others have to say.

Perhaps a Badass Accesories subindex for clothing/items that indicate a badass is using them would be the best way to break off that particular section. Another for Badass Establishment Scene.

Moved,

  • Badass Bystander: They were minding their own business until your turned their world upside down. Now, they will make you regret that mistake. (still think this is more of a plot trope than a character type, which is what the name implies. Needs a misuse check for being used as a character type rather than as a way that a character is met (making it more of a scene)
  • Badass Cape: Long flowing capes... the traditional accessory of certain breeds of badass. (Badass Accessory.
  • Badass in Charge: The boss kicks ass. (I think this is a character type, where as the below are ways of being in charge)
  • Badass Creed: A philosophy that espouses badass as a central tenet. (either an accessory, although that's stretching the term quite far, or an identifier most likely)

I'm not sure whether Asskicking Equals Authority really belongs on this list - it's more about the "rule by the toughest" sort of thing.

I used to like the word badass, but now I hate it so much if I met it in a bar I'd give it a Glasgow Kiss.

I very much support this project. I'll put some work in tomorrow after the gym.

Martello, there's very little actual "work" (ie: rewriting pages, changing wicks) compared to looking at a trope and making a judgement call based on the information given.

Does anyone else back up, refute, or otherwise have opinions on the five tropes I listed in this post.

As noted, I maintain that Asskicking Equals Authority isn't a true "badass indicator" and doesn't really belong.

Agreed on the other tropes.

Next batch.

  • Badass Damsel: She's NOT as helpless as she looks. (I'd say contrast, but isn't this a direct contradiction?)
  • Badass Driver: Give them a vehicle, and they will do hardcore, death defying shit with it. (seems kinda pointless, this just seems like a stunt driver or something)
  • Badass Finger Snap: A badass snaps his fingers and AWESOME happens. (hm, I can sort of see this, it's something the stoic badass is likely to do after making a Clean Cut or something)
  • Badass Furry: Their furry body is just an extension of how badly they plan to epically make your life suck for trifling with them. (cut, badass+trait)

Okay, Cut Badass Furry, and movie badass finger snap to badass establishing moments.

I don't know about badass driver.

Badass Driver seems like it's definitely a trope - the ground vehicle equivalent of the Ace Pilot. But I don't think it's a badass trope, and should probably be removed from the index.

I don't understand Badass Damsel or Badass Finger Snap at all. Badass Furry should definitely be cut outright.

Badass Damsel is a contrast trope, though it could maybe use a rename. Badass Finger Snap is "I make awesome things happen by snapping my fingers." That one bears more looking into, though.

Badass Damsel really seems like an oxymoron, though. And the examples don't help much (a common trend with these tropes, naturally).

Glad we all agree Badass Furry can go. As for Badass Damsel, a new name at least sounds good.

So, looks like everything in that set is for TRS, except for Car Fu (which can simply be dropped from the list) and Badass Furry (which is toast)?

Badass Fingersnap: A wild badass shows up, Badass Cape billowing in the wind. An enraged mook makes a menacing gesture toward the helpless bystandard. The wild badass darts forward drawing his sword faster than the eye can see and passes the mook. The mook freezes. The wild badass reaches a single hand up into the face siloutte and snaps. The mook flies apart in a torrent of blood and chunks.

Badass Damsel seems to be trying to be "Damsel in Distress but not a lame character". We may want to move it to cut.

Badass Driver: I think we may want to rename to Ace Driver or something.

Badass Damsel... I've seen one before, so I'd say it's a trope. However, it needs a major rewrite because it just sounds like Damsel in Distress Done Well. Also, too much gushing. Finally, I'm not sure it's really a Badass trope in the first place.

Badass Driver is a trope, but not a Badass trope. Same with Car Fu. Rename the former out of the snowclone.

Badass Finger Snap is one of the establisher tropes.

Badass Furry is not a trope at all. Axe it.

I still think Badass Finger Snap needs a TRS for clarification. Same with Badass Damsel.
