We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations
- GastonRabbit — Content Violation Discussions

As am I.
Doesn't bother me this much, but I don't think I have my badge yet...
I now go by Graf von Tirol. And I've added you.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI'm cool with it.
Do we need a 100% vote on this? I'd say this is a fairly unobjectionable thing and the main people who need to speak up are the dissenters.
Fresh-eyed movie blogLu went ahead and added you all, far as I can see. If someone really doesn't want their name there, I guess they could ask for it to be removed.
On a side note, since more volunteers seem to be wanted, I'm happy to be the herald for the sandbox!
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. You jerk.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerProposed herald message for the Sandbox:
- This is a list
- This is indented incorrectly
- This is indented with no bullet point
Hmm, interesting.
(not serious)

Rhymes with "Protracted."Proposed slightly longer message (also not really serious; we don't exactly need a herald):
Good morning/afternoon/evening/youshouldbeinbed, [[troper]], and thanks for coming to the Playpen Sandbox. As you've probably worked out, this place is for all your forum testing needs, though you can't usually start a new thread. Got some formatting to do and you don't know how it works? Experimenting with a new markup? Post here and you can see how it'll look without derailing or confusing a different thread.
Unlike the other subforums, this one doesn't have a real community or specific guidelines. That said, there are a few things to note, even here.
- The Forum Rules still apply, not that I've ever seen them broken here. Don't link to anything sexually explicit, even if you tag it as such or only the adverts are problematic. Don't embed more than one image or video per post, as it can slow the page down.
- Since it doesn't matter if posts stay here or not, feel free to edit them whenever you like. You can use the same post to try out new things even months later (provided you can remember the post number!), though most people go for the simple option and make a new one.
- See that little blue button in the top left corner of the "Add Post" page? It says "Show Markup Help", and that's precisely what it does. For a lot of stuff — You Tube, footnotes, quotes, etc. — it will tell you everything.
Now that that's out of the way, it's time to go over the other purpose of the Sandbox: Seeing who can make the cЯΛziëST post! Disclaimer
If there's anything that you want help with for some reason, e.g. a particularly strange method of formatting, how thumps work, the use of a keyboard, differences between the wiki and the forum... then please do PM me. Have fun, and come post as and when you need.
*thumbs nose at Lu, grinning*
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Well, it's aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalright and cЯΛz y enough, but why not make one for poor Trope Talk instead? It needs more love than the sandbox.
Totally not trying to fit Trope Talk somewhere, I swear.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerYou could always do it yourself...

Ah, it's a shame that heralds can't pull double-duty...
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.I never said anything in this post.

I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!I can't tell if that's a serious application or not...
Forgot a "not" in the last sentence of the post. It is, but if you couldn't tell it was serious, then I must not be cut out for the job.

I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!I recommend you go back and read some of the messages other people have wrote for applications. You can start with mine.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Wow. And here I thought my app for Wiki Talk was worse than that.
I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!Well, I saw your post and it wasn't thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat bad. You can try again.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerSo, what do I still have to work on for my post?
It wasn't that it was bad. I actually thought it was a good draft. It's just that your surrounding text (and I think particularly the missing "not") made it sound like you weren't actually being serious. Hence the confusion: good draft, but seemingly non-serious about it.
It's fine, I thought Totemic Hero was sort of telling me it was bad without really using those words. Well, maybe he was, but either way I may write a new one when (if?) it's set in stone that I will not be the Wiki Talk herald.
I was also in a silly mood at the time (just aced the ELA final ), so that explains the ambiguity of the surrounding post.
I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!Well, I thought the main problem was the formatting. It probably would have been better to spell out the guidelines in a list (and thus make it easier to read). That's what most of us did.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Do you really want the Wiki Talk heraldship?
If you want it that badly, I'll withdraw my application.
No, not that badly at all. Don't withdraw anything.
I know this is a cliché, but I feel that way about your draft, honestly.

I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!It certainly seems like you are more knowledgeable and active here than I am. I am just older and have more writing experience, that's all.
And to be frank, your draft seemed better than mine anyhow. I've more or less been expecting that you'd be chosen, myself.

Ditto.
