Can we get a misuse check on this?

The title is a metaphor for any object capable of summoning any convenient Deus ex Machina.

It's not a literal hat, not literally magical, and it's not related to Hammerspace or the Hat family.

WTF... Why isn't this about literal Magic Hats? Stage magicians pass off theirs as one and then there are the ones like the Sorting hat in Harry Potter ect.

No YKTTW hardly any examples, overlaps with other tropes... Cut!

Cut that poor thing from that title.

Speaking of which, should we YKTTW Magic Hat, for magic hats that magician usually wear and pull rabbits out of?

Oh, there's a YKTTW for Hat Hammerspace already. But we can still make a Costume Trope.

We do already have Hat of Power, which would definitely be related to the magician's hat.

We have Robe and Wizard Hat as well.

Brief, informal check of some of the wicks showed consistent misuse either for literal magic hats like Harry Potter's Sorting Hat, Hammerspace devices like Felix The Cat's Bag of Tricks, or both.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

[up][up] and [up][up][up]: Neither of those quite fits the magician hat, since Hat of Power only applies to hats that actually give powers (unless you think stage magicians... well...), and while it's often accompanied by a cape, it's not always, so Robe and Wizard Hat doesn't really apply either (especially since the first wizard hat most would think of is conical, not a top hat).

There is now a page action crowner here. I included rename and cut options, but I did not elaborate on the cut option since I am not sure exactly where the leftover examples would go. I imagine that we can sort that out in the event that the trope is cut.

Still, I think that we could probably still use the title "Magic Hat" on another trope if the current Magic Hat trope is renamed or cut.

My main issue with the trope is that it isn't clearly defined. The examples are all over the place and the description isn't helpful at all. That plus the abysmal usage makes me question what value it actually has as a trope—I think we should just cut it, and if there's anything to be saved, it can be sent back to YKTTW.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

^ I agree. Besides there being misuse for literal magic hats right on the page, what the trope actually is seems very vague. It's part Mr. Exposition, part Magical Database, part Great Big Book of Everything with a twist of Ass Pull.

This needs more votes. I do think it should be made into a supertrope for magical hats in general. We need more supertropes.

We do have that particular trope. It's Hat of Power.

Then let's just make this a redirect to that and clean up the wiks.

Agreed. If we want to make a trope for the actual "magician's top hat" as a costume trope, we could do it under a different name, like Magicians Top Hat.

Actually, reading Hat of Power, it's not a supertrope for any hat that's magical. It's a specific trope for headgear giving superpowers. Any magic hat that does anything other than give the wearer superpowers is not that trope.

So this trope would be a supertrope to Hat of Power and any other tropes that have to do with magical hats.

Consensus is to make Magic Hat the supertrope for all magical headgear.

It can be a supertrope and an index at the same time.

Most large Super Tropes are indexes of all the things they are a supertrope to.
