Right now all we have for School Uniforms is Sailor Fuku yet more and more we have different types of School Uniforms cropping up Pic of all the girls last season of anime. only three of them are Sailor Fuku can we create a super trope to Sailor Fuku? There are quite a few varities out now, Sweaters (Amagami SS), Military inspired (Infinite Stratos), Vests and Jackets (Negima). Every series is different and a lot of time is focused on the designs, but however almost all follow the rule of short ass skirts.

And maybe even a Spear counterpart for boys uniforms?

I am fine with having a supertrope, but I just do not want it to become "list every series in which someone wears a school uniform" since I do not believe that is really the point of having a trope page.

I was under the impression that part of the reason why Sailor Fuku was trope-worthy was because of the differences between how it is used in media and the reality (i.e. the current shift to more Western uniforms in Japan, trope used for Fanservice, and the like).

I also feel like the Sailor Fuku uniform itself is unique because of its connection to Joshikousei (which I still think should probably be cut at this point since all of its examples seemingly also appear on the Sailor Fuku page). As for a spear counterpart trope, I think that there definitely is a delinquent uniform that I have seen in multiple works that I think might be worth having as a trope.

I think it would be more useful to have the page describe the different variations of school uniforms that are common in fiction (Sailor Fuku, Gakuran, Skirt and Blazer, Jacket and Tie, Catholic Schoolgirl, Jumpers, etc), and leave the examples for the appropriate sub pages.

Just remember there is no reason to make the Super-Trope Japan only. Many other countries use School Uniform as well.

Obviously, but lets also avoid the urge to purge it entirely of anime references, since they are incredibly pervasive in Japanese works, that needs to be addressed.

Would it be good to make regions subpages? like

and so on.

I think the examples lists would get rather large for Japan examples should be built around colors and differences from each other no School Uniform in anime is the same its like they are trademarked for each series.

Sorting by type would be a better idea, like some of you said the Japan section would get really large.

Quite a few examples I've seen used in anime aren't even exclusive to Japan, alot of them were inspired by western uniforms and where would fictional examples like space schools go?

I don't think male uniforms would need their own page, they're far too generic, Just a slightly different Jacket design if they wear one, over a usually white shirt with different colour Ties, Pants are even worse, mostly Black or some shade of Brown.

Maybe make a trope on how generic male uniforms are instead.

Most male uniforms are pretty generic (shirt jacket pants...) but there are some outstanding stand outs. Like Persona 3 [1] And Persona 4 [2]

Probably need a trope for girls Wearing Guys uniforms as well.

Types lets see. (Some animes also let people wear variants that actually will be in another classification though.)

[up] The vest and jacket uniforms are actually most associated with East coast US prep-schools. That's why anime's use them. That variant should probably be called Prep School Uniform.

It's November, what's the status on this?

Personally, I think making a external sub-trope for every style of school uniform is overdoing it. Sailor Fuku can stay as is.

I like Raso's suggestion for making a supertrope for Japanese uniforms (both male and female). That would probably be broad enough, Tropes Are Flexible after all.

A School Uniform supertrope that lists the common variations and the schools they are associated with would be good.

You know, when I saw the title for Spear Counterpart to Sailor Fuku, what came to mind was not different types of school uniforms but this. What are we supposed to do with examples of boys in sailor suits?

Oh, and on School Uniform topic, keep in mind that some things that y'all are associating with prep schools and the like are pretty much standard fare in places like England. School kids wearing uniforms there is like school kids wearing t-shirts and jeans in America. Simple Truth in Television.

If this were in an America show it would be a "snooty" prep school. In England it might be a troubled inner city comprehensive with lots of poor immigrant and working class kids.

Um, American works and American inner city schools often have uniforms. It's common even in media. They tend to be used there in order to curb behaviour problems and to stop kids wearing gang colours.

[up]Very rarely... Most American examples are prep schools. (The American Examples of Transfer Student Uniforms are almost all prep school involved... Not counting the misuse.)

I forgot about this thread... So what next? Crowner on how to divvy up the supertrope?

  • Divide by type of uniform
  • Divide by country (useful for explaining the way that girls uniform is handled in drawn works in japan vs real life and specify that it's required in middle school and highschool but never in elementary school. As well as works uniforms are almost always unique to the work itself like they are trademarked.)
  • what to do with guys uniforms.
  • softsplit or hard split each option.

I would prefer pages by country (If said country has enough examples) then soft split by type and guys with another softsplit at the bottom. With each example giving an image link of the uniform as well as talking about their their unique qualities.

I need to YKTTW Crossdressing Uniforms (or something with a better name) whenever I get time.

[up] That's because uniforms that are in public schools don't tend to look anything like a fuku. They tend to be pants for both girls and boys. You can't rule on the broader trope based on examples of a much narrower one.

A page doccumenting different types of school uniforms sounds to me like Useful Notes fodder. For actual tropes, narrow it down to those with cultural and in-story or character stereotype significance. Which from what I've seen so far includes Prep School Uniforms and Catholic Schoolgirl.

I kind of agree, I don't see that there is much symbolism in the types, aside from Prep School, Catholic and Military. Those are tropable, the rest don't appear to be.

The fact that there even is a School Uniform is a trope and what that uniform looks like is a subtrope to Costume Porn and are unique rarely are two series with the same uniform. (especially girls) Winter 2011's selection of different uniforms. Then [1] [2] [3] [4]. As well as different uniforms for Summer and Winter.

Eh, I guess I could be sold on a Costume Porn subtrope, at least for the Japanese version...lots of those uniforms don't remotely exist in reality, no?

That said, as the Spear Counterpart goes, there seems to be much less variation when it comes to boys uniforms. Whenever I've seen it, it's either dress shirt and slacks or the military-style high collar uniform.
