Recent schmecent! It's all about the oldschool 2000 edition. :P
I never completed a game either, but I had a ton of projects going on, and a lot of lofty ideas. There was Warriors of Zenith, which was a hyper-cheesy story about the Archipelago of Zenith and how one child from each of the 10 islands was chosen to band together and use their elemental powers to save the world and stuff. The only really amusing thing about it was that the main characters were Pals With The Immortals and every time one of them said, "Oh, Immortals!," the Queen would go "Hellooo down there! ^_^", to their great annoyance.
The other one which got decently far was Curse Of Crewel, which was about two humans and two dragons. All of the dragons from the Dragon World were turned into stuffed toys by an evil sorcerer, but the two humans (the Self Insert Character-s of my friend and I) had a "World Key" that revived them. And thus we went on exploring various worlds inhabited by Talking Animals (the Octopus World, the Monkey World, the Wolf World..), using elemntal powers and stuff. And it had some horrifically-designed puzzles, but it was a cute little game.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~Madrugada^ Hah, I like the Immortals joke.
My story goes...
Steve (so named for being a generic RPG hero) was a long-time quester on Gameserver Island who has went on and completed quests many times. In this universe, a "quest" consists of finding the Sword of Pwnzation and using it to defeat the Leetosaur, the king of monsters who always comes back for the next quester. Eventually, he got sick of them and vowed to never do them again.
One day, during a party hosted by the king, Steve found the king's daughter, Princess Irene, got her and himself drunk, and then... had a long night together. The king found out about this and he was... not happy. So he punishes Steve how? By sending him on a quest!
So, for most of the game, you're going on your quest as usual, starting from the beginning of course since Steve threw away all his infinity plus one equipment. Along the way, though, he finds a group of criminal hackers that want to establish dominance by taking over Gameserver Island. Not only that, but it also seems like someone else wants to attain power. By destroying the 5 Trees of Balance!
Cue tons of jokes about online multiplayer games and RP Gs in general.

@Usht You wouldn't happen to have sprites for "middle aged women" and Griffons do you that fit with the 2003 default sprites do you?

So does anyone here know the differences between XP and VX? I hear some people say XP is better, but I don't know why, and I was planning to get VX...
Welcome to th:|VX is more user-friendly, but it doesn't allow for as many custom map tilesets.
Why I am afraid of fences.Hmm...I guess I'll get XP just because it costs $30 dollars less. :P
Welcome to th:|I have RPG-Maker 2 for the Playstation, though I rarely play it... mostly because the monster making bit annoys the crap out of me: no matter what happens I can never get the monsters to actually attack or work or do anything, no matter how much I set their tendencies.
I thought about selling it and getting a version for the PC/Mac, but I can't really find one that's both legal and in my price range.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. So now that I have RPG Maker XP, I figure this is as good a place as any to ask...is anyone here able to do sprite art (and hopefully, anyone who can program in Ruby or make music)? Failing that, anyone know a good place to find someone for those things?
Welcome to th:|I'm willing to make sprites and will be able to do so in... two days. My question is, is what you're doing an interesting enough project to bother?
The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.Well, I think it's interesting, of course. :P I'll be attempting to do something unique. Here's the main gameplay and story premises.

Welcome to th:|Hi folks. I used to play around with RPG Maker back in high school, and I was only vaguely aware of the Phylomortis series. It turns out the series has a TVT page but when I found it, it was nothing more than one guy complaining about the games' dialogue. I nuked the opinion from the article but since I don't know much about the series to begin with, I can't add much else. Is there anyone in this thread who's familiar enough with this series of RPGM games to make it into a proper article?
(Here is a link to a TRS thread I made about the article, for anyone interested.)
I always wanted to make a game with this but I have exactly 0 experience with scripting and the other stuff that needs to be done, so is it easy to learn how to use it?
You don't need to do any scripting to make stuff. There is a scripting language built in for advanced things, but you don't need to use it. You can make a complete game with maps, towns, NP Cs, quests, battles, etc. without ever touching the scripting language.
Yeah, I got it today and it's a lot like Spore Adventure Creator.
Edit: I need some extra resources, anybody knows a page to get them?

@Neo Chaos: I remember those, but I don't think Advo ever actually finished any of them. If anything, I see them mostly as Tech Demo Games to show off the capabilities of the various makers.
I think the secondary reason that there isn't much more info on the Phylo games (other than the aforementioned dialogue) is because the games/demos were so damned hard that few people were able to see one through to the end.

I hope you get tiny bits of eggshell in all your omelettes for the rest of your life!Ugh, the Phylomortis games were awful. But my dislike of them is partially colored by my dislike of the creator, who was one of those Small Name, Big Ego types.
I believe Advocate finished the first two, but abandoned the third to work on other projects (or play World of Warcraft, depending on who you ask).
You can find a little bit of info on the games by googling Phylomortis. I don't recommend trying to play them yourself, though. Excruciatingly irritating games. There's no way I could write a neutral write-up for that trilogy.
RPG Maker VX Ace is supposed to fix most of the problems that VX had, but it hasn't been translated yet so I can't confirm or deny it. I do know it has a built-in resource generator that allows you to make your own faces and characters from pre-made parts.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.I suspect it will. The English market has done pretty well by XP and VX, and 98-2k3 proved that if they don't translate it, someone else will and distribute it for free. Some profit is better than none, after all.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Stupid question, perhaps, but is RPG Maker capable of coding skippable cutscenes? Every game I've played that was made in it makes cutscenes unskippable (which is quite irritating when there's a five-minute cutscene before a difficult boss fight.)

That's Feo . . . He's a disgusting, mysoginistic, paedophilic asshat who moonlights as a shitty writer—Something AwfulYep, it sure is. The problem is that most of the developers have no idea how to implement it and/or are too lazy to do it the brute force way.

"Oh great! Let's pile up all the useless cats and hope a tree falls on them!"Are there any good action RPG's made with RPG Maker?
Likes many underrated webcomicsI recently acquired the original Playstation one. Oh boy oh boy.
It'd be nice to have a PS 1 mouse to go with it, though...
