Except Sean used to be, yanno, good.
Until Chun Fighter III: Ken Strike: Yun for the Future shuffled around the tiers, dropping Sean from high to bottom.
Even Dan is a viable middle-tier character IV. Sean is literally the Shoto Butt-Monkey.
"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The MadI'd like to see Sean make a comeback and start kicking ass again. Losing the basketball-hadoukens would make a good starting point. He's supposed to be the next succesor to ansetsuken, him and ken's son are essentially the next Ryu and Ken! He requires more badassery!
Also he and Sakura need to meet.
Capcom: But Ryn and Ken make so much money!
They weren't supposed to be in SFIII. But yeah. Money.
You know that Sakura only has eyes for Ryu. It won't happen.
But yeah, SFV needs to push Sean and Mel into more prominence.

"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The MadMay–December Romance? I doubt it. Ryu only has eyes for training.
Oh, right. Mel. I need to write that down.
Yes, and by SFV we'll be bitching about people spamming Sean and Mel online and FDF+HARD PUNCH SHORYUKEN, provided they make Sean not suck.
But it's nice to see some newcomers enter the fray, so I think it's a fair deal.
It's more frustrating waiting for the asskicking than the asskicking itself. He's only about seven or so years older. Sakura's 16 in Alpha 2, Ryu was about 23 during the time of the Alpha series. Also, one of his win quotes in IV has him saying that he may one day settle down, but not any time soon. Not to mention that the series heavily implies that if anyone is going to be Ryu's pupil, it's Sakura.
More like, "FDP DRAGON SMASH, WAT DA FOK IZ DAT?"

"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The MadI thought there was at least a ten year gap between them. Eh. And i'm sure Ryu will settle down someday, but not until his gray hairs start fading into white. I mean, have you seen the track records these martial arts masters have? Gen and Uru are 100+ years old and still going strong.
Oro. And it's implied that an overabundance of ki increases longevity.
"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The Mad-Writes down Oro-
Yeah, exactly. And Ryu's essentially the potentially largest wellspring of Ki in the world. Guy's gonna be taking names in 2112. Assuming the Mishimas don't go all devil gene on him in the meantime, anyways.

Honestly, I think Street Fighter V should show a major shift in the cast. Not an overhaul, but a time shift. Ryu and Ken should be like Gouken. They worked together to establish a dojo/established competing dojos and trained disciples who become the new Ryu and Ken. These disciples take on the standard Ryu and Ken moveset and playstyle, while Ryu and Ken take on a 'mastered' style that exemplifies each of their strengths. Ryu would be built entirely around the Hadoken, where Ken would be built around the Shoryuken.
Capcom would never do it, but it would be interesting.
Or at least another generational shift. Bring back some of the younger fighters as Older and Wiser adults.
Yet, we all know Capcom wouldn't do it. Street Fighter = Cash-Cow Franchise, so they're not going to take big risks.
"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The MadMaking Sakura not constantly wear her Schoolgirl outfit would be a nice step, but alas, you know, Capcom.
It's more frustrating waiting for the asskicking than the asskicking itself.Isn't Sakura a good deal older than Sean as well?
I once saw a pic shipping him with Makoto, to general hilarity.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Just call it Neo Street Fighter and place it XX years in the future. Mega Man did. Everyone loved the X series.
On that note, the thought of an older, but not necessarily wiser, Dan Hibiki amuses me greatly. He could even pick up his own apprentice to teach the ways of Saikyo to. Akuma could have an apprentice too. Hell, that would be a really good plot-based excuse to produce a whole slew of new shota-clones while changing the old ones to the point where they have a near-Gouken status.
Adult!Sakura would have developed a fighting style of her own after she stopped obsessing over Ryu.
Well, they did name a certain trope for a reason. When street fighter 3 came about, there was a huge outcry for some of the old characters.
So yeah, a shift would be nice. Meet us halfway between "Cast overhaul" and "Cast update".
This is just conjecture, but the overall timeline of the series goes like this (mostly based off of release dates):
- Street Fighter is set in 1987.
- the Street Fighter Alpha series runs directly after SFI to the early 90s ('90 or '91)
- Super Street Fighter II takes place in either 1993 or 1994 (depending on whether or not you use the Japanese or American release dates)
- (Super) Street Fighter IV is set one year later ('94 or '95)
- Street Fighter III: New Generation is 1997; Third Strike is 1999
Sakura is 16 in Alpha 2 (she was born in the early 1970s), and about seven years pass between then and IV, placing Sakura in her early twenties (23 or 24). Sean appears to be in his late teens (I remember reading something about him being born in 1980), so Sakura has at least half a decade on him.

"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The MadSean could always develop a crush on Sakura that mirrors hers with Ryu. By that point, Sakura would have gotten over Ryu and would be focusing entirely on her training. Hilarity ensues.
No! Stop! Don't try and hammer out a timescale for Street Fighter! It's the Comic-Book Time trap!
Although i wouldn't mind if they kept it in the 80's-90's just with modern technology. Seeing as we have clone labs and ki-infusers anyways it wouldn't be too much of a stretch, but the public in general wouldn't like it "Because it's sorta weird." sigh.
That would be hilarious.
In hind sight, they might have been better off ignored, since most old school fans blew off Street Fighter 3 anyway. It created a new fandom. Or in a twist, Street Figher V should only have Akuma as the returning uppercut-fireball-spin kick character. Show Ryu and Ken in the trailer and on the cover. Then base the entire story around Alex. Sean and Mel would have victory quotes that amount to "It was time to move on" and to drive the point home, not only should Sean keep his basketballs, Mel's style should most resemble Karin's. Ryu and Ken would still be in storyline scenes so Capcom couldn't be accused of lying.
The fandom would get over it when they realize they aren't losing a whole lot in game play or in story. What's the point of Ryu anymore? Akuma found someone stronger than himself named Oro, so he has no more reason not to kill Ryu when they fight. Ryu can keep showing up in versus games, Akuma and Sean replace him in main games and Ken can retire. Eventually Alex occasionally replaces Ryu in versus games. Namco, moved by Street Fighter's example, stops putting Mishima's in the spotlight.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackYou are asking for some major Internet Backdraft right there.
"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The Mad
Ha ha ha, no. There is only ONE Saikyo master in Street Fighter. And Dan is the streetest fighter of them all!
It's more frustrating waiting for the asskicking than the asskicking itself.
