"The thing that bothers me about Bieber-hate is the degree to which it appears to be based on a very homophobic hatred of the effeminate-looking and -sounding male." - Morven

Yeah, I can't help but notice this kind of thing. It's practically a meme now that Bieber is a "queer" despite his expressed attraction to specific women. With this going on there's a lot to talk about. And yet, Bieber's fans tend instead to cling to the idea that his haters are just jealous, despite that this idea has already been refuted from a variety of perspectives.

I haven’t been keeping track of all the Hatedom, but does it really seem all that different from people hating the Spice Girls and Hanson when they were popular?

I thought this was just that latest teenage heart-throb who won ire for being popular and singing pop tunes.

The Hansons were popular?

If getting a song played on the radio once every hour is a good indication of popularity, then yes, they where popular at one point.

Thread Hopping-ish.

The funniest thing about all the hate he gets is that from what little I've seen of him, he seems like a really nice guy.

I admittedly make fun of his fans for being "bicurious tweens".

He is unusually young for a professional artist, has a modest amount of talent and yet incredibly derivative work to show for it, and owes his enormously disproportionate mainstream success to a chance encounter with an executive.

He is the Musical Christopher Paolini.

(@ Wulf: Dammit, you beat me to my metaphor!)

He's also the latest in a long line of corporate manufactured boy-droids (possibly the most obvious one yet) aimed at the big, tender, profitable hearts of teen girls (and maybe their mothers), at a time when the fed-up haters are more connected than ever and can join together in a resounding chorus of 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!'

Unfortunately for them, the fans are also connected...

Eh, no matter who it is, whatever the current big unthreatening male popstar targeted at the teenage girl audience is, they always end up really unpopular with pretty much everyone who isn't a teenage girl.

Way of the world.

I imagine there were a lot of people who didn't like singers like the New Kids On The Block or Take That back in the early nineties for being manufactured bands; now you go to You Tube and it's folks like them that Justin Bieber is being compared to unfavourably.

As soon as somebody that the hatedom believes is worse comes along, they will probably transfer their ire to them.

Fun fact, one of my friends has a haircut that is pretty much the Biever haricut, but to be fair he had that hairstyle years before Biebeer.

Still didn't stop us from ribbing him a bit for it, though. In jest, of course. He did go as Bieber for Halloween this past year, though.

One thing I wanted to solidify into a law of business is that, from an entertainment business point of view, 10-16 year old girls are the most important people in the world for netting a huge sum of money.

Twilight, every boy band ever, every teen sensation ever, every shitty movie that should never have seen more than straight-to-dvd releases... My God, they're that whole economy.

Look at the writer's comment on Bieber's stance on Canadian healthcare...

"Of course he’d love it. With the amount of times he’s going to get his ass-kicked, those bills add up."

This is even worse than what a 12 year old would come up with to make himself look cool.

Agreed.

Actually, it's more of people of both genders from the age 13 to 18, since there's a wide variety of things that can appeal to them and that's also the area with the largest Periphery Demographic, which is why PG 13 movies tend to do exceedingly well in theaters as well as things like shonen and shoujo being read by both children and adults.

As for Bieber, I can't help but feel sorry for the guy. I mean, he's young enough not to understand the full implications of what he's in. He probably got the job, made lots of money from it, thinking, hey this is the dream job, but won't foresee the eventual collapse it'll have while his ego slowly grows.

Long story short, probably another good kid who's, via business, is going to the cement hard at some point.

He's 17 (as of today). He's old to know (or should know) what's going on around him and what it entails.

Yes, all of his success has happened in a relatively quick amount of time, but he's almost of legal age. He should have some knowledge of what's going on.

He started at a young age was the point. As for everything else that follows, well even full fledged, functional adults got caught up being stars and suffered for it.

Because it's an easy way to make supposedly smart comments on You Tube.

(I'm not a fan of him either, though.)

[down]I don't personally make such comments. I did say "supposedly" smart.

You don't have to be a fan, but it sure is petty to whine about other shows that you don't watch/music you don't listen to.

Yes, that's true. I'll give you that.

Maybe I'm imagining myself going through this and not being sidetracked by all the fame and fortune.

Then again, I never sold million of albums, made tons of money, and had throngs of girls running after me when I was 16, so I can't say how I would react.

But what's the worst thing he's done since he went big time (besides say a few dumb things)? That paintball incident? Heck, compared to some other young celebrities (-coughcoughLindsayLohancough-), he's practically a saint.

I may have found the first legitimate reason in the world to dislike Justin Bieber. He believes that everything happens for a reason, including rape
I much as I like the idea of Justin Bieber being some teen women hating neo-con, the kid was flat footed by Rolling Stone. He noted that he has never been in the position of a raped women to judge them. Which is fair enough really.

I completely agree, possibly the largest reason for it. I really do worry based on what we see of other teen heart-throbs, for his future. It's going to be a difficult transition for him into adulthood.

I understand poking fun at Bieber— hell, I enjoy doing it myself. Famous people are mocked/joked about all the time. It's just that this whole "HE'S THE WORST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO MUSIC!" thing is getting old. Very, very old. His music isn't that good, but he is far from the worst musician ever.

I have a theory. Most pop artists are talentless, Autotune-assisted hacks who glorify meaningless sex and chauvinism, but they have something Bieber lacks: Street cred.

Ke$ha, Akon, BEP. These are examples of losers who maintain a pretense of being 'one of us'. An unpretentious, tell-it-like-it-is, all-american artist.

Bieber can't project that kind of populist image — all we see is his brand name. which is ironic, since he's a wunderkid who was picked off youtube.

I am a little offended by the idea Ke$ha is 'one of us'. The woman is a tramp, like an actual god damn hobo.
