So I finally got around to watching this series and the Rebellion Movie. Some good stuff with the ending to the movie being really fucking horrific.
I don't get the hate for Hitomi though. I mean, I get the Unwitting Instigator of Doom aspect, but she still technically did nothing wrong IMHO.

I got the Madoka Magica manga and the first volume of "The different story" as part of my Christmas gifts. I've had this title in my sights for a while now, looking forward to diving into it later this week.
Hitomi didn't cause Sayaka's death spiral, anyway. She may have unintentionally sped it up a little, but the real problem was Sayaka's futile attempt to "White Knight" her way into Kyousuke's heart, which was never going to work because he's too clueless and she never bothers to ask him out (and as far as he knows, she didn't do anything other than hang out with him in the hospital and buy him stuff). Being turned into a (in her opinion) soulless abomination didn't mesh with her just-world hypothesis mindset, either.
Rebellion is... complicated, but I liked that ending more than the original... eventually. Most people's initial reaction is something along the lines of "WTF." At this point, it kinda feels like the ultimate example of an Esoteric Happy Ending.

The thing I do appreciate about Rebellion is how it strips away all the "romance" of a Heroic Sacrifice. It's a massive Aesop Amnesia on Homura's part, but there is also something tragically inevitable about the decision she ends up making.
I actually like the ending on its own and think it's fitting for the series
But I don't like the ending as part of Rebellion because it goes at odds with the entire rest of the movie, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and leaves me unsatisfied with the movie
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI think I have to agree. If I saw the movie as a stand-alone, I think the ending would feel awful. I've always considered it with respect to the rest of the series, however, so it always worked for me.
So...anything new?
Apparently there have been some new manga: one that takes Homura's quest into Denser and Wackier territory and another that features a different cast of magical girls and the lead goes around killing witches and magical girls.
Well, that's fine and good, but anything new and not spin-offy?
Rebellion works as an ending for the type of series it belongs too. I'm not sure what makes the ending bad when taken as a standalone film.
The first mistake is trying to even watch it on its own.
Wait, my best friend isn't God! What's up with that?
But I think they're trying to say that Rebellion's ending benefits from the main series because you get to see how fucked up Homura got and it justifies her actions in the end. If you try to interpret it on its own, it's less of a Jumping Off the Slippery Slope moment.

I finished the manga this afternoon and really enjoyed it, although the art style made the battle scenes hard to make out what was happening at times. My question now is, aside from watching the anime at some point, are any of the spinoff manga or Rebellion worth picking up?
Watch Rebellion, mate. It's part of the whole experience. Ya don't, like, watch A New Hope and then move on without seeing The Empire Strikes Back.
For the spinoffs, Oriko's good, Kazumi's got some cool ideas but a lot of people don't like the execution, Wraith Arc's good, Suzune's decent as far as I've seen it translated, and I haven't actually read any of the others so someone else is going to have to tag me in for, eh, I think it's just Tart and Different Story.
I haven't read Tart, but apparently it's actually really good.
I'm still just blown away that a Magical Girl manga about Joan of Arc exists.
Most is covered. Tart is supposed to be really good, yes, but I haven't managed to get hold of it.

Random post again, but I found another Kamen Rider theme that has lyrics that fit several of the girls in this show:
Seriously, Kamen Rider has so many songs that fit Madoka Magica it's not even funny.
I'll take your word for it
Kyoko does a Homura impression
Why you shouldn't start a pillow fight with Homura
A completly healthy relationship◊
And an oblogitory Kyoko/Homura picture◊, because while it might not be quite as good as Kyosaya, it is a pretty great pairing nonetheless.
I also found a good Kyoko fanfic called Tip of the Spear. It's a short one-shot fanfic that serves as a neat little character study of Best Magical Girl, detailing both her former idealistic mindset and her current cynical and jaded one. And the ending is a nice little touch that shows that her good qualities aren't 100% gone, just buried very deep beneath her harsh exteriour. She's perfectly in-character here, and it's a must-read for any Kyoko fans IMO. It's also from the same guy who wrote Red Soul too.

Tart Magica is really good, but the translation is taking *forever*. At least, the official one.
I liked both Oriko and Kazumi Magica, but a lot of people tend to either only like one or the other. Suzune was cancelled for being... Not good, so I didn't bother reading it. Different Story was also interesting.
I was going to read Homura Tamura but the art style really threw me off, so I stopped.
Oissu! The last chapter of "Wraith Arc" of Madoka Magica is ready

Whaddya think? I think it's like a quick wrapup for this helluva trainwreck. It has a good opening after Mado Magi post-ending, but the ending seems to be forced and like "ASAP"
How do you mean forced? I didn't notice anything particularly off about it.
Never realized how fitting Komm Susser Tod was for Homura until now:
Geez, how depressing can one make a song be?
Fromt he very same music video:
Akuma Homura: You never understood anything.
Homura: I thought this was supposed to be a world without pain, and uncertainty.
Akuma Homura: That's because you thought everyone thought the same as you do.
Homura [To Madokami]: You betrayed me! You betrayed my feelings!
Madokami: You misunderstood from the very beginning.
Homura: Nobody wants me, so they can all just die.
Akuma Homura: Then what is your hand for?
Homura: Nobody cares whether or not I exist. Nothing ever changes, so they can all just die!
Madokami: Then tell me, what is your heart for?
Homura: It would be better if I never existed. I should just die too.
Akuma Homura & Madokami: Then why are you here?
Homura: Is it okay for me to be here?

"We are just like Irregular Data. And that applies to you too, Ri CO. And as for you, Player... your job is to correct Irregular Data."
Pretty much.
The fight was done for Homura. They were going to be together, an dit would be over.
She decided she knew better though. It's still up in the air as to whether she's right, but from the sounds of it, this dude knew what he was doing, while we can't be sure if Homura is making decisions that are quite as informed.
One Strip! One Strip!
