Medieval RPG setting? I wouldn't be a hero, I'd build a freaking merchant empire for myself. No fighting (unless we count assassination attempts), big bucks and plot relevance? Score.
If I had to be in the hero's party I'd be Ms. Exposition, there to tell all the heroic Tropers exactly what they're getting into. I'm very good at blending in, being quiet, rooting out obscure details, conversing with people, being inoffensive and remembering details, perfect for a personified info dump.
Alternatively, I'd be the chef.
Now, FPS? Hide until a friendly military man comes around to point me in the way of a safe zone and then never leave.
If I can simply pick up a sword and swing it around with some ability, then I'd totally call dibs on a frontline fighter role. I like the idea of being a swordsman that can protect others. There's a reason why my favourite D&D class is the paladin.
If I get teleported in with nothing but my own squishy body and abilities, then I'd guess my resources would be best spend on studying some kind of magic.
If there where no world hero society analogue, chances are after awhile we'd essentially become it. We'd be like the Justice League. Only we'd all be Magic Knights. Because a Magic Knight is a thing of awesome.
It makes sense though: Pretty much every video games protaganist in a world where it fits is, on one level or anoether, a Magic Knight. Ryu from Street Fighter is as comfortable pummeling you with his fists as he is shooting magical Ki Attacks. Everyone from Dynasty Warriors charges up elemental power by striking folks then unleashes it in a flurry of flaming strikes. In Bio Shock you can fill someone full of holes or set them on fire with your mind and then fill them full of holes.
Full-Contact Magic is the way to go. Why wave your hand when you can do the Kamehame Hadoken pose?
Oh, one thing we should defiantly have a specialist in: Telekinesis. It's basically Awesome Yet Practical if you can master it. I mean, what CAN'T you do with it?
If I was in a video game, I'd probably go the safest route and be the town NPC that speaks in nonsensical phrases to the protagonist. Maybe working at an Item Crafting shop. And depending on the game, I could get in a few card games. Or get it on with some hot protagonist.

Player characters can't romance NP Cs! Only other party members! What you are suggesting is utterly depraved! DEPRAVED!
They can in Harvest Moon / Rune Factory.
Those games are an exception in plenty more ways, so argument denied.
And you know, survival instinct is all well and good, but this would be the chance to become a hero or adventurer of sorts. No way I'm wasting that on becoming some town NPC that may or may not get killed anyway once the Big Bad comes knocking. I've been playing way too much Golden Sun for that.
If it were an RPG setting I'd become a GREAT AUTHOR!
I mean most books have about a paragraph, and nearly everyone is the setting has a copy in the bookshelf.
Failing that I'd write a monster guide that was entirely incorrect, possibly to spite adventurers who used it. :)
By the powers invested in me by tabloid-reading imbeciles, I pronounce you guilty of paedophilia!Echo Bazaar kind of counts right? Because despite the tendancy towards eye bleeding, death, insanity, banishment, imprisonment and Mr Eaten it still seems like a good place to have fun.
If I were in some Sci-Fi setting on a ship or research facility, I would try to familiarize myself with all the maintenance accesses and escape hatches and such.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelI;'d do the same and check if there is any AI running the ship....just in case

^I'd wreck the AI, then. Or at least put in a backup plan in case of Failsafe Failure.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelLet's not be AI rascists. Remember what happened to the Quarians.
The trick is to not destroy or threaten the AI but make sure it can't actually do anything that might cause problem. If it needs a reason, 'I don't trust anyone but myself to handle something like that' should be good enough.

"Welcome to Troperia! Land of Tropers!"
:smug:If I landed in the Disgaea Universe.....I'd try to take over a netherworld......and maybe steal the main character spot from whoever is going to be picked for D5

@Miij: I'd also try and tighten up security so that some hotshot hacker doesn't compromise the ethical restrictions and make the AI do something simple that isn't opening and closing doors, which would be necessary for a fast escape.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelMake the servers immune to swords, bullets, fire, electrical shock, and hitting with a big chunk of steel. Hell, even kingdom hearts knows that'll bork up your computer, and they use the simplified version of Tron Computers. And talk abou digitizing hearts and shit, like it's SO easy.
:smug:Sounds more like backing up the software in case one group of servers goes down.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelFor fantasy RP Gs, I could be the thief that is better off doing ranged attacks, but I can still use knives. Evasion is an important skill for me if I want to survive in an RPG. Plus, I could search for traps (and create them), riches, and weak spots...
And if I'm trapped in a Science Fiction setting, I could be The Mario.
Shutdown sequence initiated.Gorram, I thought we were supposed to pick roles based on our actual skills, not our intended ones =) Apparently, my definition of 'trapped' is somehow different from the rest of you guys XD
I'd still be on the support team, though. Somebody has to brew all those healing potions, make those armor repair kits and polish those InfinityPlusOneSwords when the rest of you are out doing whatever it is you're the best at doing.
Videogames do not make you a worse person... Than you already are.We troper's wouldn't get trapped in a video game. The video game would be trapped with us.
The best role for me would most likely be a Mage, but if i do get trapped in a videogame and take up that role i'd definitely have the freerunning skills like Ezio and the ability to create weapons only i can use with objects not meant for that purpose, such as a sword made of fire. And a shield made out of a Black Hole.
There really is only one solution for the "Humans are too weak" problem (that I know of).
Therefore, I hope I land in the World Hero Society and they train me to be a hero.
If that happens, THEN I'll get on the Halberd.
Stargate SG-1 Let's Watch. Because my ZHP thing failed.
