• Base-Breaking Character:
  • Umaru herself is this. Either she's adorable, relatable, hilarious, and the best portrayal of a female Otaku since Konata Izumi, or she's Heroic Comedic Sociopath who's too immature and bratty to be likeable.
  • In some circles Ebina is loved for her Moe factor as well as playing an excellent Foil to Umaru. Others find her to be too normal compared to her wacky friends and detest her for her conspicuous lack of a backbone.
  • Sylphynford Tachibana is either a cute Genki Girl whose misguided efforts to get Umaru's attention are always good for a laugh, or a one-note side character who is even more annoying than Umaru.
• Escapist Character: Umaru is this for many fans, being able to be perfect at everything outdoors, while regressing to gaming and lazing around indoors.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: One of this series' many Shout Outs is the "Gapcom" game center employee who looks like Ryu from Street Fighter. Then Street Fighter V Arcade Edition brought back fan favorite Sakura Kasugano, and her official story is that she now works part-time...at a Capcom game center. Like mentor, like student.
• I Knew It!: Quite a few fans guessed correctly that Christina Kelly would have a major role in the series' dub.
• Les Yay:
  • Quite a bit between Kirie and Umaru, especially since Kirie has a pretty blatant crush on Umaru.
  • There is also a bit between Umaru and Sylph. It gets turned up in later chapters due to Sylp miswording things like telling UMR-san "Thank you for going out with me" while in the middle of a date like scenario or spending an entire day trying to get UMR-san to play The Pocky Game with her while not even knowing what it is.
  • Then to complicate things a bit both Kirie and Sylph have Les Yay with one of Umaru's alternate identities, Kirie with Komaru and Sylph with U.M.R.
• Memetic Mutation:
  • The country owes me a big brother.^Explanation A Chinese meme poking fun on their one-child policy. It comes from Chinese viewers' envy for Taihei's provision towards Umaru—and considering they don't have any siblings at all... Before you ask, this meme is not Banned in China, as demographic pressures already caused very public debate over population policies in China in The New '10s, and the meme was less than half a year before the one-child policy changed to a two-child policy.
  • Umaru on the front page! ^Explanation A meme coming from 4chan, where threads spamming Umaru took over the entire front page of /a/ and mods had to start deleting anything relating to the series. The phrase by itself still shows up frequently on the board, similar to Everyday Until You Like It.
  • WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING ^Explanation Another meme from 4chan. The phrase was originally used to denounce the anime, specifically Umaru-chan's Super-Deformed chibi self, by posting it along with this image◊. The fandom took it and ran with it.
  • "I'M LOVING HAMBURGERS!"^Explanation The Gratuitous English slogan for the NcDonald's ad which Umaru gets addicted to
  • The scene from the OP where various versions of Umaru dance in a circle has been widely copied with various characters from other series.
• Most Wonderful Sound: "Umaruuun"^Explanation The sound effect whenever Umaru reverts from chibi form back to her Outside form
