YMMV / Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat

Go To

  • Awesome Music: If you think "Bury the Light" from Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition wasn't enough as an awesome industrial rock song for the franchise, composer Casey Edwards and singer Victor Borba once again teamed up to create another banger, this time specifically for the Peak of Combat spin-off game... and they delivered. Officially unveiled on January 2024, "Fire Inside" also radiates sheer badassery with its lyrics and instrumentals. Its lyrics also contain some mythology gags to the Devil May Cry franchise, such as mentioning "ebony" and "ivory" in reference to Dante's named handguns.
  • Common Knowledge: It's well-known in the fandom that NebulaJoy is the primary developer of the Peak of Combat spin-off, and that the Devil May Cry series' recurring director Hideaki Itsuno has been busy making Dragon's Dogma II after previously working on Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. These created some misconceptions that claim Itsuno wasn't involved with PoC at all, when in fact, he actually joined the game's development at some point and was even interviewed by IGN about it.
  • Fan Nickname: "Wallet May Cry" - The most common nickname for this Devil May Cry spin-off due to its Gacha monetization model, on top of other neutral derivatives such as "Wallet of Combat".
  • Older Than They Think:
    • Peak of Combat is not the first mobile game in the Devil May Cry franchise even though it pops up so frequently as the top result when searching for "Devil May Cry Mobile" from 2018 onwards, and despite ads stating that it's the only DMC game licensed on mobile. Devil May Cry 4 previously had a simplified version for the iPhone, titled Devil May Cry 4 Refrain, while Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening also had at least two simplified Java game demakes (in 2D and in 3D). It's still possible to search for footage of these older mobile games, but they're either so obscure or have been delisted long ago, many Devil May Cry fans (or even the advertisers themselves) were either unaware of, or have completely forgotten about those games.
    • This is not even the first Chinese-made Stylish Action RPG mobile gacha game because titles like Honkai Impact 3rd and Punishing: Gray Raven were released years before this game's launch. In fact, a co-founder of miHoYo once confirmed that HI3 was inspired by the DMC series in terms of gameplay, while the makers of PGR were aware of its playerbase being fans of DMC that they made an Ascended Meme reference out of Vergil's memetic chair into their game. Despite the overlapping playerbase, not everyone in the DMC fandom has played a gacha game to be aware of these. In turn, being a newer game caused gacha gamers to inevitably compare Peak of Combat with HI3 and PGR.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The game being advertised and released with the more simplified (albeit criticized) combat system from the open beta instead of the fan-preferred implementation from the closed beta left a sour impression from hardcore DMC fans who swore off playing the game entirely, saying it had "wasted potential" when it ditched its previously-complex gameplay and mechanics such as Real-Time Weapon Change.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The first Private Beta Tests had a control scheme that, while a bit cluttered by mobile standards, was still a good representation of traditional DMC combat, with many pulling combos similar to what Dante and Vergil are capable of doing on consoles despite limitations. The later Open Beta Tests and final game changed the combat entirely to be more in-line with other mobile games such as Honkai Impact 3rd, Punishing: Gray Raven, or Genshin Impact, containing altered simplified mechanics such as character switching, certain loadouts being tied down to character variations, and adding in dedicated cool-downs to even the most basic skills such as Dante's signature Stinger. Previously available features like firearms and weapon switching were removed. Many older fans were not happy with this sudden change as it severely limits what the cast of Devil May Cry are capable of doing, with those groups demanding that NebulaJoy reinstate the older combat mechanics for consistency's sake.
    • Almost adding insult to injury, many trailers and promotional materials still appear to be showing the previous and better preferred version. And fans asking for a return, complete with video of prior gameplay, have been hidden or blocked on official Peak of Combat social media.
