Wham Episode / Dream SMP

Go To

Despite taking place on a Minecraft server, the Dream SMP has a lot of episodes that change the story, usually known in later seasons as "lore streams".

Note that all dates referenced on this page are referring to the day when the livestream takes place, not the in-universe time.

Unmarked spoilers ahead.

Season 1

  • The announcement of the results of the L'Manburg election. While POG2020 gains 45% of the popular vote, SWAG2020 and Schlatt2020, in an agreement made two days earlier, manages to gain 46% of the popular vote combined, edging out and winning the election. This is immediately followed by Jschlatt's inauguration, where declares himself Emperor and exiles POG2020, then his greatest political opponents, in his first speech. In a later speech, he orders the walls of L'Manburg be torn down and renames the country to Manburg, turning the once-peaceful nation-state into an expansionist totalitarian dictatorship.
  • The Manburg Festival. Oh boy, even though it starts out quite lightheartedly, a lot happens during the Manburg Festival: At the end of Tubbo's speech, which he ends with "Let the Festival begin"note , Schlatt takes out several concrete blocks and traps Tubbo in a box, announcing that he knew Tubbo had been The Mole all along and orders Technoblade to execute him. After the execution is carried out (with Schlatt and Quackity also dying in the crossfire, the latter non-canonically), Techno proceeds to unleash fireworks on the attendees of the Festival, killing about half of them within moments. At the same time, Wilbur hurries off to find the button, only to fail at doing so.
  • The aftermath of the meeting with Jschlatt. The tyrant discovers Quackity's attempt at conning him out of power, breaking down any possible negotiations and ensuring war will happen. Dream breaks off his Enemy Mine with Pogtopia, having been convinced by something to defect to Jschlatt's sidenote . Before leaving to prepare Manburg for war, Dream drops one more bombshell — someone in Pogtopia is a traitor, whose reveal will reportedly be far more devastating than Eret's in the L'Manburg War of Independence. Though most in Pogtopia are confident it's Technoblade (who has outright stated in the past that he'd side with Jschlatt to keep things interesting), several factors eventually led to them accusing each other (with Tommy being considered the most likely traitor if not Technoblade)note .
  • Good God, the final battle for L'Manburg, i.e. the Manburg-Pogtopia War, or November 16th. To summarize:
    • Pogtopia ultimately wins the war. Both Wilbur and Tommy decline to become President after all they've been through, leaving the role to Tubbo.
    • Philza finally logs on for the first time.
    • Wilbur destroys L'Manburg after over a month of build-up and fake-outs.
    • After an entire series of Death Is Cheap, Jschlatt and Wilbur get Killed Off for Real (the former of an alcohol-induced heart attack or stroke, the latter in an assisted suicide by Philza).
    • The traitor Dream spoke of is revealed to be Wilbur, who presses the button and blows up L'Manburg, but Technoblade also independently betrays L'Manburg, attacking it after discovering that the Pogtopian revolutionaries had lied to him about agreeing with his philosophy of anarchism.
    • Dream himself pulls one last Enemy Mine with Pogtopia in order to stop Jschlatt (and later Techno) only for it to be revealed that he orchestrated both L'Manburg's destruction and Jschlatt's downfall in one simple meeting with Wilbur, ultimately being both the true antagonist and the biggest winner of the war (even as Pogtopia reclaims L'Manburg) — and he gets away with it all.
    • Techno also gets away, and though his plans of anarchy are foiled for the time being, it's clear he won't stay down.

Season 2

  • The Green Festival. Where do we begin...
    • Dream revealing that the Community House, the one landmark of the server that's been untouched since the beginning, has been bombed, signifying that all that's left of the old SMP is truly gone. Moreover, the culprit is still at large (Dream blames Tommy and later Ranboo for it, but there's enough implications that Dream himself bombed the home to frame Tommy).
    • Tommy and Tubbo get into a widely-anticipated fight that most expected to kill one or both of them, but calm down and manage to make amends.
    • After a month of exile, Tommy shuns Techno (who he'd allied with) and rejoins L'Manburg at last, after a Heel Realization that he was becoming the type of person he didn't want to become. Moreover, Tommy finally lets go of the fight for his music discs (ending a series-wide Myth Arc that's older than L'Manburg itself) and Tubbo gives the disc in his possession to Dream in order to truly end the ordeal... only for Dream to reveal that, now that he has both music discs, L'Manburg has no power over him — and that he has no reason to leave L'Manburg around.
    • Dream reaches out to a betrayed Techno, and the two team up with the intention of turning L'Manburg into a chunk error — and unlike both previous times L'Manburg's been destroyed, they intend to make sure there's nothing left of L'Manburg for it to return from. They seem to be outnumbered, but in truth they're more powerful than ever — they have Phil on their side, Dream has sent Punz into L'Manburg as a mole, and Techno has stockpiled enough Withers to cause the apocalypse without any TNT shenanigans on Dream's end.
    • This time, there's no week of preparation before the arc's final battle, there's no final reflections before everything goes down — Dream only gives L'Manburg a day to prepare for the end.
  • The Doomsday War. Dream, Techno, and Phil attack fifteen minutes ahead of schedule (they hid their true intentions using an ancient technique called lying), and the resulting battle goes so quickly in their favor that they don't even need to use 75% of their Withers. No Deus ex Machina saves L'Manburg this time. Anarchy wins the war.

Season 3

  • Tommy's March 1, 2021 stream. After spending half of Season 1 and all of Seasons 2 and 3 (so far) on one canon life, Tommy finally loses his last life during the lockdown in Pandora's Vault. Making this even more of a wham is that his murderer is none other than a remorseless Dream, whose defining characteristic is that he didn't want to kill Tommy for his own selfish pleasure.
  • March 4, 2021 also counts because of Tommy's revival alone, marking the first major success in reviving someone who'd previously lost all their lives (Jack Manifold's return from Hell being the exception).
  • March 26, 2021 has Tubbo and Jack preparing their nukes again in case Dream escapes from prison by reviving Wilbur from the dead. After setting up an area outside Snowchester so they can have the nukes ready at a moment's notice so they can nuke Dream and stop any escape of his in its tracks, they return to the area where they store there nukes... only to find that one of them has gone missing, and they have no clue who could have it now, nor what reason it has been stolen for.
  • The Red Banquet was a massive event, which shifted the balance of power immensely. To recap, the Eggpire trapped Eret, Puffy, Fundy, Sam, Foolish, Niki, HBomb and George in the room with the Egg, and try to sacrifice them to it. They succeed in sacrificing Foolish, taking one of his canon lives, before they're interrupted by Quackity, Techno and Purpled, and after a short standoff, Puffy grabs an axe and kills Ant to avenge Foolish. The Eggpire is forced to flee when Techno and Purpled join the fight, and the Egg falls into the hands of the Anarchists and Pro-Omelette group.
  • April 29, 2021. Tommy visits the Vault in order to assassinate Dream, but Sam turns on him when he realizes his true intentions. Dream, meanwhile, takes Ghostbur hostage to ensure his own safety... and proceeds to revive Wilbur from the dead, killing Ghostbur in the process. Wilbur is ecstatic to be alive again, but gives little to no indication of just what he plans to do, making him a complete Wild Card. Tommy's stream then ends as Ranboo can only ask Tommy in horror what his actions have led to.
  • June 6, 2021. Technoblade lets Philza know that he's visiting the Vault in order to visit Dream, and leaves him his will in case he's killed. Then, after going through all the security checks and signing all the waivers, Dream shouts at Techno that he's been Lured into a Trap. Awesamdude then informs Technoblade that he's the greatest threat to Dream staying imprisoned, and that his visit to Dream will be very, very long indeed, right before lowering the lava. Right before the stream ended, however, Techno talks with Dream and implies that he has a lot more control of the situation than Sam would like to believe...
  • September 14, 2021. Dream and Technoblade have dug a fairly decent tunnel given the situation when Quackity appears to threaten Dream for the resurrection book... by threatening Technoblade's life, rather than Dream's. Just as he's about to kill Technoblade with a pickaxe, Technoblade disappears, as Phil had just activated Techno's Ender Pearl Stasis Chamber in the Syndicate base. After laying into Phil for taking three months to read the will, Techno leaves to follow coordinates that Dream had given him, ending up on the mountain where Technoblade and Dream had first met during the era of Pogtopia, on the very block Dream stood on then. Underneath the grass block is a chest with a book, of which the name wasn't shown, and filled to the brim with maps labeled "blueprints".
  • A double-whammy takes the form of November 27–28, 2021.
    • For November 27, we have the Fiancés finally confronting each other, and while Quackity has made up with Sapnap, Karl is an entirely different story. In a mixture of memory loss and warping on Karl's part and already-present insecurity/paranoia and relationship trauma on Quackity's part, it's revealed that Karl hadn't forgotten Quackity, but rather who he was and what he meant to him, and the two have effectively placed restraining orders against each other and claim that they never want to see each other again. Oh, and Purpled betrays Las Nevadas and Slimecicle loses a canon life and his sentience in the crossfire.
    • For November 28, Technoblade breaks Dream out of prison and finally pays off his debt. During the escape attempt, Ranboo (who was also in the prison) gets killed by Awesamdude and Niki's status as a member of the Syndicate gets revealed to the SMP. Connor, an unexpected prisoner, also gets broken out and decides to join the Syndicate since he's got nowhere to go and wants to be a main character.
      • Despite the Uncertain Doom situation regarding Ranboo, it's confirmed that he is canonically dead, given some Twitter posts and the appearance of Ghostboo.

Season 4

  • Dream's lore video released on January 13th/14th, 2022. It's revealed that, rather than just practicing on the dead pets of the server, Dream has been testing the Revive Book on real people, even before reviving Tommy. More specifically, he's been testing it on Lazarbeam and Vikkstar, due to their isolation from the rest of the SMP. After forcing them through a Resurrection/Death Loop to test the book, Dream finally killed them permanently. Two members of the Dream SMP have been dead for an entire year, and nobody noticed. After that, it's also revealed that Ranboo was the one to blow up the prison and trap Tommy in there — specifically, through the message he sent through Sapnap... and the ultimate reveal that Bad was conspiring with Dream and gave Ranboo the maps needed to trap Tommy inside, for whatever reason.
