One Steve Limit / Dream SMP

Go To

The Dream SMP has had a long and illustrious history of taking the One-Steve Limit trope and trampling all over it. One would think the content creators sharing names with their respective characters is already bad enough, as fans have mostly taken to using labels and nicknames to distinguish them, but nope, it gets even more confusing from here, from one-shot or bit characters to NPCs and more.

Inter-Series

  • There are currently 3 separate characters named 'Jack': Jack the potato farmer from "The Village that Went Mad", Jack Kanoff the bandit from "The Wild West", and Jack Manifold, though the first two are one-shot characters in a spin-off series. Then, there's also Jackie the gladiator, another one-shot character, from "The Pit".
  • There are 5 characters named 'Michael' or variations thereof:
    • Puffy's adopted Zombie Piglin daughter Michelle, whose given name is a feminine form of the name 'Michael'.
    • Tubbo and Ranboo's adopted Zombie Piglin son Michael_Beloved.
    • Michael Mcchill, the POV-character.
    • Michael from "The Wild West", formally and better known as Ron Ronson.
    • Mike Hunt from "The Maze", who prefers to be known by his full name.
    • And for anyone wondering, yes, this name overlap has lead to some slight confusion in the in-game chat once.
FoolishG: !c Foolish neg KILLED MICHAEL THAT FUCKER
      Michaelmcchill: ??????
      Michaelmcchill: oh the zombie

Main Series Exclusive

  • There have been about 5 different characters who go by some variation of 'Dream':
    • The regular Dream, i.e. the child abuser, sometimes called "DreamWasTaken" after his content creator counterpart's main Twitch username.
    • Girl Dream, usually known by her El Rapids name "Mamacita".
    • DreamXD the god, usually called by his full name or just XD.
    • Mexican Dream, usually called by his full name or "M.D".
    • Drista, named for a portmanteau of 'Dream' and 'sister', and is usually called just that.
  • There are two 'Carls': Carl with a C, Techno's beloved horse, and Karl with a K, the self-insert character played by Karl Jacobs (who does not accept deviations from the spelling, possibly excluding the Hispanicized version used in El Rapids).
  • Foolish Jr is the adopted Totem son of Foolish Gamers the character, making this a more justified case.
  • In a slightly more downplayed example, we have Eret and Eryn, which obviously also applies to their content creators.
  • There are two places commonly referred to as "Dream SMP", both the faction bordering L'Manburg and the server in its entirety. To avoid confusion, fans most commonly refer to the faction as the "Greater Dream SMP".

Tales From the SMP Exclusive

  • There are two separate characters named 'John': John John the Saloon Owner from "The Wild West", and John the gladiator from "The Pit". The latter is renamed by royal decree to Ugly, and then to Grievous… though not because of this trope (the two episodes are set a couple of centuries apart), but because 'John' was regarded to be an Unfortunate Name by Porkius VII.

Meta

  • There's a dual example in "The Maze":
    • Toby is played by GeorgeNotFound, who also plays the character of the same name.
    • George Billiam is played by Tubbo, whose IRL name is 'Toby' and has occasionally been called that in lore streams, albeit not while directly talking to him.
    • In turn, the original Sir Billiam III was played by Technoblade, though George Billiam at least has the justification that he was descended from the "legendary" Sir Billiam.
  • This applies to the content creators themselves as well, as there are two creators on the DSMP who go by 'Alex' in real life — Quackity and Technobladenote , respectively. Thankfully, both of them are usually referred to by their screen-names or nicknames derived from them, and when their real-life names are used, it's easy to infer who's being discussed from context clues.
