Sonic Comic is an official Yonkoma Sonic the Hedgehog webcomic written and illustrated by Eitaro Toyoda, a game and level designer of the Sonic games, and published on Sonic Channel, the Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog website. Launched on July 1, 2016, as part of Sonic the Hedgehog's 25th anniversary, each strip, known as an "Act", centers on a Day in the Life of a major character from Sonic and pokes fun at their characteristics and Mythology Gags to the games they have starred in.
After updating every Thursday/Friday, the webcomic concluded with appropriately 25 Acts and a Grand Finale on December 22, 2016.
You can view the original Japanese webcomic here. English fan translations are available online.
Not to be confused with Sonic the Comic, Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics), or Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW).
The entire series did receive an official English translation two years later, however, they were only released through two Tomy figure/comic bundles (Modern/Classic Tails and Modern/Classic Metal Sonic to be specific) of all things. As of now, there are no plans for a release of the official English translations outside of the two bundles.
Sonic Comic provides examples of:
- Amusing Injuries:
- "Act 3: Ancient Memory" has a heavy fruit falling and hitting Knuckles' head.
- "Act 12: Hidden Leaf Jutsu!" has Espio struggling to live through a day invisible, getting sprayed by Cream's water hose, nearly hit by Amy's Piko Piko Hammer, and colliding with Tails' Tornado.
- Black Comedy: Tails' Tornado biplane colliding with Espio in "Act 12: Hidden Leaf Jutsu!" couldn't be that pleasant. Not to mention Espio's And I Must Scream fate.
- Cerebus Syndrome: Shadow's "Act 6: A Shadow's Past" and Cream's "Act 10: It's Alright Now!" are the only Acts that do not have any funny gags in them.
- Deliberately Monochrome: Limited Color Palette example. Each Act is colored in shades of a color relating to the starring character.
- Face Doodling: The "evil thing" Eggman Nega does to a sleeping Eggman in "Act 16: Evil Daily Routine"
- The Future: According to Silver in "Act 14: Pumpkin Trigger", people in the future celebrate Halloween with pumpkin dumplings and ghost trains.
- Gone Horribly Right: In "Act 25: Bad Communication", Cubot attempts to talk with Metal Sonic by disguising as Sonic and saying his catchphrases. He ends up getting attacked.
- Grand Finale: Appropriately named the Special Stage, the 26th strip stars a Crowded-Cast Shot of every character (except for Eggman Nega) that has appeared in the webcomic and has them Breaking the Fourth Wall to thank the reader.
- Gratuitous English: Normal to Sonic the Hedgehog, the names of the starring character of each Act, some names of Acts, and a few sound effects are printed in English.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: In "Act 13: Unexpected Catch", Charmy decides to eat the cake, which is the part of his own trap. Results are predictable.
- Hypocritical Humor: Knuckles teaches himself in "Act 3: Ancient Memory" that using your power to do what you want isn't right, before a fruit falls from the tree onto his head and he proceeds to knock the sacred tree down.
- Keep the Reward: Played for Laughs in "Act 19: The Pride of the Wind", when Jet leaves all of the stolen money to Wave and Storm, because he doesn't care for money and prefers thrilling adventures and races. This backfires when he needs to use a vending machine.
- Mythology Gag:
- The Chao Walkers from Sonic Adventure 2 show up in "Special Stage".
- In Eggman Nega's comic, he flees from Blaze in a similar manner to how he (along with a few other bosses) fled the heroes in the DS version of Mario & Sonic Winter 2010.
- Oh, Crap!:
- When Espio sees the incoming Tornado in "Act 12: Hidden Leaf Jutsu!"
- When Charmy realizes he fell into his trap in "Act 13: Unexpected Catch"
- Satchel Switcheroo: How Rouge and Charmy mixed up a briefcase of classified documents and another of picture books in "Act 7: The Missing Documents"
- Self-Deprecation: Omochao's "Act 22: I, Omochao!" makes fun of Omochao as a Captain Obvious Annoying Video Game Helper.
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: "Act 21: The Tears of a Man" starts with Storm racing on his Extreme Gear hastily, only to miss the free lunch special at the Omochao Restaurant.
- Silence Is Golden: "Act 23: ?!♥" is the only Act without dialogue, focusing on the antics of three Chao.
