Newbies was a popular Minecraft Machinima made by MsBreezy (at the time Kuledud3) on YouTube. It features Joe and The Newbie as Joe tries to teach the Newbie how to play Minecraft, usually ending horribly. The series ended/went on hiatus back in 2014.

Tropes

  • Black Comedy Rape: Johnny, a character first introduced in the Nether video. According to the Newbie, he "only raped me twice."
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The beginning of "Wut" has the duo find a portal with a sign that reads "Jump through to advance the plot...", which leads them wondering if they really should, to the point of asking Kuledud3 herself. While Joe considers ignoring them "just to piss them off", Newbie jumps into the portal anyways, with Joe following suit.
Joe: Goddamn it Kuledud3, you and your amazing ideas but very large plot-holes!
  • Catchphrase:
    • "CYYYYYYYAAAAAAAA!"
    • "Did somebody say moderator!?"
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: The Moderator's method of playing spleef involves World Editing the very snow block floor out of existence, letting his opponent fall while he remains flying. Joe naturally calls them out for this and challenges them to a legit match, and while the Moderator seems to be playing by the rules this time, the moment a snow block is removed beneath him is it revealed he has flight enabled for himself. This pissing off a spectating Ghast which rushes and kills him in a sudden explosion.
  • Creator Cameo: Kuledud3 makes an appearance as the Nether inhabitant that helps them escape.
  • Creepy House Keeper: The Moderator's butler in the Herobrine special part one is a male version of this, but not a Crusty Caretaker. This made much more sense when he turned out to not be a butler at all, and was actually Herobrine himself.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: The Newbie, trapped in The End with nothing but their bare hands and their golden pants, kills the Ender Dragon in one fell swoop by inexplicably flying into it and blowing up. Even better is that he considers the task a piece of cake despite not being equipped or smart enough in the slightest.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The first episode contrasts heavily with the rest of the series:
    • The synopsis is a simple setup: Joe invited his friend to play Minecraft for the first time, trying to teach them the ropes while putting up with his antics that inevitably burns his house down the moment he's AFK.
    • In terms of tone, it was relatively tame; most of the humor comes from Newbie being an inconsiderate and impatient player who causes problems for Joe by simply not knowing any better, in contrast to more vulgar and out-there setting and developments.
    • Most of the "randomness" is exclusive to the various Funny Background Events that occur which aren't relevant to the plot.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: In earlier episodes, Herobrine can be seen hiding in the background for presumably this reason.
  • Gainax Ending: Some of the later episodes end in this fashion:
    • "Creative" ends with one. Joe, Newbie, and the Moderator are stuck in Johnny's dungeon, and the Moderator suggests solving this problem "WITH PIRATES!" Joe and the Newbie both give a Big "NO!" in response, with the "You Are a Pirate" song playing like before... briefly, only for the episode to abruptly cut to Jake playing a record. And then it ends.
    • After the moderator gets his comeuppance in "Spleef", Newbie inexplicably arrives on the scene to shout that he found diamonds... which are actually emeralds to which Joe corrects him about. Afterwards the fourth wall breaks apart when the former asks how the episode should end, with Kuledude3 inexplicably showing up to propose "cleaning a mirror" — cutting to live footage of exactly that with Soulja Boy playing in the background.
    • To top off the bizarre nature of the episode that is fittingly titled "Wut o_o", after saving Joe and Newbie from a whole army and subsequently shooting the two inexplicably like a toxic player, the Moderator suddenly gets crushed by Nicolas Cage descending from above.
  • Gay Moment: It's hard to explain why Joe would do this...
Joe: Yes, fancy meeting you here, chap.
Newbie: I do say, the weather is quite nice.
Joe: (Runs up to Newbie as close as possible) I'd fuck you!
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Newbie doesn't immediately fall from having the the floor removed beneath him in "Spleef". Later, the moderator exploits the trope to his advantage by enabling flight for himself, getting called a dirty cheater in the process.
  • Just Like Making Love: Upon being asked to return to the overworld, Kuledud3 goes on a tangent that gets increasingly sexual.
Kuledud3: I remember the surface. It was wonderful, like God was constantly rubbing against your body. (He goes on making this sound more and more sexual for a little while.)
Newbie: Wait, what are you talking about?
Kuledud3: The first time I masturbated.
  • Man on Fire: In first episode Newbie accidentally sets himself on fire with flint and steel, burning down Joe's house!
Joe: Dude, you burned down my fucking house!
    Newbie: Haha, look at that!
  • Lampshade Hanging: Quite a bit in the introduction of "Wut", from Joe remarking that the portal before them appeared "out of fucking nowhere", along with plenty of fourth wall breaking.
  • Obligatory Swearing: On many occasions.
Joe: Do you see this tree?
    Newbie: Yes.
Joe: Do you see this beautiful, motherfucking tree?
  • Previously on…: Parodied. Herobrine Part 2 begins particularly dramatic yet silly, with the title card reading "Previously on nubbies" being followed by footage of a burger being assembled while dramatic music plays in the background... and nothing else, cutting to a "This Time..." with the actual episode footage.
  • Running Gag: In the Nether video, characters would be willing to do anything in exchange for a raw fish.
Shop Keeper: That'll cost ya 26 iron for one set.
Joe: Oh, and I need two... How about this raw fish?
    Shop Keeper: TAKE EVERYTHING!!!!
    • Whenever someone says moderator (and sometimes when they don't), The Moderator will teleport to them, or blow up a wall and fly in, and say, "Did somebody say Moderator?"
    • The Newbie is strangely able to obtain vast amounts of TNT for no adequately explained reason.
    • Whenever someone says the word "pirate", several pirates will fall from the sky and swing their swords around rapidly while "You Are a Pirate" plays very, very loudly in the background.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Every main character, especially Joe. The show is basically an F-Bomb minefield.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: In "Herobrine Part 2", the group find themselves trapped in The End, with The Moderator's initial wording being misinterpreted by Joe and Newbie as The End Is Nigh, even after trying to repeat himself with more clarity that the very land that they're on is called The End — The Moderator going as far as to visualize their stupidity via a tower with the equivalent height. It's only via the word of a complete stranger do they actually understand, much to The Moderator's frustration and inner trauma.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The Newbie and Joe seem to be great friends, but at the same time, they constantly insult and annoy each other.
The Moderator: Where's your naked friend?
Joe: Probably drowning in lava somewhere.
