Kombat Kids
is a web video based on the Mortal Kombat franchise. In the creators own words, it's "Mortal Kombat meets Muppet Babies (1984), with a helping of South Park though it also takes cues from Happy Tree Friends and the animation and character designs are reminiscent of The Powerpuff Girls.
Kombat Kids starts with Spinoff Babies versions of the Mortal Kombat characters playing in an idyllic playground in front of a school. Sonya Blade suggests playing a game and Jax comes up with hide and seek.
The video has racked up over 26.5 million views to date. An entire series of follow up episodes are in development — very early test footage was released on the official Kombat Kids Facebook page and the teaser trailer for Kidquest: Kombat Kids Part Two was released on March 1st 2017, though it's since been taken down.
The creator of the video is Ted Bracewell a.k.a. Tedakin who's aware of TV Tropes — he's linked to this article from the official Kombat Kids Kartoon Facebook page. He's also set up a Patreon page to fund future development of the series but it's currently inactive and the sequel series seems to be in limbo.
Kombat Tropes:
- Anyone Can Die: By the end of the video, nearly all the kids are dead or dying. Nightwolf and Liu Kang are the only ones left standing, but they are both then blown up by the Predator's self destruction.
- Artistic License – Biology: Johnny Cage gets impaled from behind and his heart somehow pops out of his chest right through his sternum without any visible broken bone.
- Beam-O-War: Scorpion's fire breath vs Sub-Zero's ice projection power.
- Big "NO!": Scorpion as he falls into hell. Liu Kang on witnessing Shang-Tsung decapitating Raiden while impersonating Johnny Cage.
- Bring It: Sub-Zero makes ice letters appear on the palm of his hand spelling out "COME AT ME BRO" as Scorpion charges him.
- Butt-Monkey: Rain - Sonya shoves him to one side while berating Johnny and Kano, then Reptile hits him to test the combat narration, then Liu Kang launches a bicycle kick into him at the beginning of the battle, then Stryker shoots him three times so he crashes back into a tree (though this actually Kenshi's telekinesis, the result is the same), then he gets hit by a Sub-Zero snowball and knocked into a tree, then Sindel blasts him off his feet with a sonic scream, then Motaro knocks him flat while charging across the grass, then Jax uses him as a human shield against some shuriken and as a club to smack Reiko around with before tossing him aside, then Raiden uses his flying tackle move on him. He survives all this and then he's cut in half by Kung Lao's still flying hat. He's not seen using a single offensive move on camera.
- Captain Obvious: Liu Kang on seeing Johnny Cage and Kano beating each other up."Huh, they're fighting!"
- Chekhov's Gun: The see-saw Liu Kang and Kung Lao are playing on in the initial scenes, later used by Kano to launch Johnny Cage through the air to land on the fountain.
- Cigar Chomper: Jax, though of course it's a candy cigar.
- Cool Shades: Johnny Cage of course. His five hundred dollar sunglasses are capable of absorbing and re-projecting Kano's eye laser attack.
- Determinator: Even after Scorpion cuts him in half, Sub-Zero stays alive long enough to do a Taking You with Me.
- Eat the Camera: As Mileena roars, the camera flies into her mouth, past her shaking uvula, and goes all the way down her throat into her stomach.
- Extreme Omnivore: Mileena eats Johnny Cage's heart, half his face and his sunglasses. The camera goes in through her mouth and down to her stomach to show living creatures and junk in her stomach. Reptile partially dissolves Jax's head with acid, then grabs it with his tongue, pulling it off his neck in the process, and reels it in to swallow.
- Eye Scream: Reptile gets an energy arrow from Nightwolf through the back of his head, popping his eye out on the point. Sub-Zero impales Scorpion's skull eye sockets with icicles. Jade is shown with her own staff impaled through her head and out through her eye with the eye pierced right through at the end of the fighting.
- Fartillery: Deployed by Bo' Rai Cho against Sonya after his Zombie Puke Attack
- Fat Bastard: Bo' Rai Cho when encountered by Sonya, visibly and audibly shakes the ground when he steps back to set up his Zombie Puke Attack on her.
- Finger Gun: Kurtis Stryker uses this; but while other people he 'hits' are knocked backwards or even explode, it's actually because Kenshi is conveniently using his telekinesis at the same time. When Styker tries to 'shoot' Sindel later, without Kenshi nearby, it has no effect.
- Finish Him!: Yelled by Tremor to Kano when he's beaten Johnny Cage.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th films can be seen if you pause at the right points.
- Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: The Predator shows up at the end just to self destruct.
- Grievous Harm with a Body: Jax uses Rain to smack Reiko around the head twice before discarding him. He then rips Sektor's arms off and crushes his head with them.
- Groin Attack: Johnny Cage does a classic knee to Kano's crotch during their fight. Shang-Tsung does Cage's signature drop and punch the groin move to Raiden while impersonating Cage.
- Half the Man He Used to Be: Scorpion cuts Sub-Zero in half with his harpoon. Kitana and Mileena simultaneously do this to each other. Baraka is almost completely cut in half lengthwise by Kung Lao's hat and it completely bisects Mokap. Shang-Tsung is bitten in half (while impersonating Kintaro) by Liu Kang's dragon form. Rain is also cut in half by Kung Lao's hat right at the end of the fighting.
- Hellgate: Scorpion opens one in the ground using his harpoon before fighting Sub-Zero. They both end up falling into it during their duel.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Sub-Zero grabs the harpoon rope and uses it to slam Scorpion into a wall during their fall into hell. Kung Lao cuts his own hand off trying to catch his own razor edged hat before it swings back and cuts his head in half.
- Human Shield: Jax uses Rain as one to block several shuriken hurled at him by Reiko.
- An Ice Person: Sub-Zero of course. He's first seen generating snow to make a miniature snowman.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Johnny Cage gets impaled on a fountain. Reptile takes three of Nightwolf's energy arrows right through his body followed by an energy tomahawk to the side of the head and a final arrow through the back of his head and out through his eye socket.
- Jerkass: Johnny Cage. His initial action in energy blasting Kano to stop him getting to the safe statue starts the whole debacle. He also insults and belittles Kano during the fight.
- Magical Native American: Nightwolf, complete with the stereotypical Native American war cry.
- Mind Screw: Sindel is a child here, but her daughter Kitana is also a child here?
Best not to think too hard on that one. - Mushroom Cloud: The aftermath of the Predator's self destruct shows one.
- Mutual Kill: Scorpion and Sub Zero after Scorpion cuts Sub-Zero in half and Sub-Zero performs his "spine rip" move on Scorpion. Kitana and Mileena cut each other in half simultaneously.
- Off with His Head!: Shang-Tsung does this to Raiden while impersonating Johnny Cage.
- Oh, Crap!: In succession in the Scorpion vs Sub-Zero fight. Scorpion hits an ice statue replica of Sub-Zero instead of Sub-Zero himself with his harpoon and shouts "oh no" when he mistakenly reels the statue in just before it crashes into him and freezes him solid. After Sub-Zero uses the opportunity to knock Scorpion into the pit to hell, Scorpion hurls his harpoon out of the pit while he's falling and hits Sub-Zero in the shoulder. Sub Zero has just enough time to say "uh-oh" before being yanked after Scorpion.
- Outrun the Fireball: Liu Kang tries to do this when the Predator self-destructs but gets caught in the explosion
- Overdrawn at the Blood Bank: Johnny Cage turns the entire fountain blood red after getting impaled on it.
- Punch Catch: Sheeva does this to both of Liu Kang's fists. Since Sheeva is a Shokan, a race with four arms, she's then able to use her two other fists to beat the crap out of Kang.
- Pungeon Master: Sub-Zero makes a lot of cold and ice related quips during his fight with Scorpion.
- Shock and Awe: Raiden, like his canonical counterpart, can shoot lightning from his hands.
- Single-Stroke Battle: The battle between Kitana and Mileena comes down to this. They cut each other in half.
- Single Tear: From Kitana just before she splits in two from Mileena's blade.
- Super-Scream: Sindel. Her power is strong enough to flay the flesh off Kurtis Stryker's face and make his head explode.
- Use Your Head: Kano headbutts Johnny Cage three times with the metal half of his face, smashing Cage's skull and winning the fight.
- Your Head A-Splode: Sindel uses her sonic scream to make Kurtis Stryker's head explode.
- Zombie Puke Attack: While Bo' Rai Cho isn't a zombie, he uses one of these against Sonya followed up by a Fartillery attack.
