"Everypony in this town has had a Welcome to Ponyville party! and it is now your turn, Mr. Human".

FUNKIN' IS MAGIC is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by bbpanzu that crosses over with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The main story is that Boyfriend and Girlfriend get sent to Equestria through Daddy Dearest throwing them into a TV, where they are greeted by Pinkie Pie, who's quick to sing with Boyfriend as a means of welcoming him and Girlfriend to Ponyville. The mod also comes with DLC in the form of bonus songs based mostly on fan-works of Friendship is Magic that must be inserted into the mod's files in order to be played.

bbpanzu created this mod as a tribute to My Little Pony and its brony culture.

Song List:

Story Mode:

  1. Smile (Pinkie Pie vs. Boyfriend)
  2. Fun (Pinkie Pie vs. Boyfriend)
  3. Discord (Discord vs. Boyfriend)

Bonus Songs (Freeplay + DLC):

  1. Smile HD (Smile HD Pinkie Pie vs. Boyfriend)
  2. Looking Glass (Three Leaf and Ruby vs. Apple Bloom)
  3. Guerrilla Gal (Tankman vs. Applejack)
  4. Babs Sneed (Babs Seed, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon vs. the Cutie Mark Crusaders)
  5. Kush (Rarity vs. Stoney)
  6. Blockhead (Amy Rose vs. Pinkie Pie)
  7. Cupcakes (Cupcakes Pinkie Pie vs. Boyfriend)

This work contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Twilight isn't too welcoming of Boyfriend and Girlfriend when they first arrive in Ponyville, calling them "monsters". Girlfriend retorts that Twilight doesn't trust anyone that isn't a pony, and Twilight's attempts to prove her wrong don't help her case. Subverted if the player is playing on Pony Mode, in which Twilight welcomes Pony BF and Pony GF without hesitation.
  • Adaptational Species Change: Tankman is a pony in "Guerrilla Gal".
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • Smile HD's version of Rainbow Dash, in the original animation, Rainbow manages to score the first significant, albeit futile, hit on Pinkie to get her off of Applejack, here... she doesn't even connect her kick before Pinkie kicks her through a tree and away from the fight.
    • Girlfriend is murdered and made into cupcakes by Pinkie in "Cupcakes". Unlike Elements Of Insanity, there's no excuse for this, since she's not subject to Adaptation Species Change herenote .
  • Animorphism: Interacting with Trixie on the main menu has her use her magic to switch Boyfriend and Girlfriend from human forms to pony forms and vice versa. The dialogue for the Story Mode cutscenes is slightly altered depending on Boyfriend and Girlfriend's forms.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In "Cupcakes", Pinkie murders Girlfriend and makes her into cupcakes.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In the normal cutscene before "Fun", Girlfriend brings up "Equestria Girls" as a time Twilight has been a human, which prompts Pinkie to explain that the week's story is taking place in a Season 1 rerun, so Equestria Girls hasn't happened yet. Girlfriend then mentions Tirek, Sunset Shimmer, Chrysalis and Starlight Glimmer, and Pinkie responds that she doesn't know any of them, once again due to the fact that none of them appear in Season 1, though once Girlfriends mentions Starlight, the player is given a humorous pop-up that simply says "Null reference".
  • The Cameo:
    • The audience of "Smile" and "Fun" alongside Twilight includes Bulk Biceps, Button Mash, Apple Bloom and Derpy Hooves. Throughout both songs, Minuette, Lyra Heartstrings, Bon Bon, Scootaloo and DJ Pon3 pass through the foreground. Derpy, Lyra, Bon Bon can also be seen in the opening cutscene when Boyfriend and Girlfriend first enter Ponyville, along with Rarity, who is talking to Spike.
    • At one point in "Discord", Screwball flies over the UI.
    • Fluttershy appears in the post-Discord cutscene. As of the mod's current version, this is her sole appearance.
    • The Nightmares seen in "Looking Glass" are Three Leaf (Who sings against Apple Bloom for the first half of the song), Roneo and Mitta.
    • Sonic and Rainbow Dash can be seen in the background of "Blockhead".
    • In "Cupcakes", Angel Bunny and Trixie's heads are mounted on the wall behind Pinkie Pie, Boyfriend and Girlfriend.
  • Demoted to Extra: Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Spike have the least amount of appearances in the mod out of the Mane Cast. Pinkie is the center opponent of the Story Mode (At least until Discord's arrival), Twilight is a supporting character in the cutscenes, Rarity and Applejack get their own songs in "Kush" and "Guerrilla Gal" respectively, but Spike is only briefly present in 2 cutscenes, the second being exclusive to the "True Ending", Rainbow Dash appears in the post-"Discord" cutscene, in the background of "Blockhead" and for a brief moment in "Smile HD", while Fluttershy only appears in the post-"Discord" cutscene.
  • Dissonant Serenity: True to form as her usual Brainless Beauty self, Girlfriend keeps her happy expression throughout "Cupcakes" despite literally getting her chest sliced open by Pinkie Pie with a chainsaw, followed by her organs getting pulled out and then her being turned into cupcakes.
  • Fangirl: Girlfriend is a "Pegasister", having quite the Squee moment when she realises she and Boyfriend are in Equestria.
  • Friendly Enemy:
    • Pinkie Pie, true to her canon counterpart, extends the hoof of friendship to Boyfriend and Girlfriend without hesitation and sings with the former as a means of welcoming him to Ponyville. She subverts this in "Smile HD" and "Cupcakes" however, as in those songs she's based on her counterparts from the respective animation and fanfic of the same names, who were murderous, omnicidal psychopaths.
    • Tankman in "Guerrilla Gal", as in the song Applejack is a new recruit to his troop, and the song is them happily singing together whilst riding in the tank.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Discord's appearance after "Fun" is very sudden, with the only foreshadowing to his arrival being rainstorms of chocolate milk coming from clouds of cotton candy. What makes his presence even more of a shock is that Pinkie explicitly stated that the events of the week were taking place in a rerun of Season 1, and Discord makes his debut in Season 2 of the original show.
  • Golden Ending: Played for Laughs if you beat the Story Mode in Pony form: Twilight writes her final letter to Princess Celestia, saying that today she learned of the magic of Funkin', and has chosen to resign as Celestia's student and instead pursue an apprenticeship under DJ P0n3. Celestia can only react to the letter in complete shock.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In "Smile HD", Rainbow Dash swoops in just as Pinkie is about to kill Boyfriend, taking the blow and thus saving his life.
  • Interface Screw: As befitting the Spirit of Chaos, Discord swaps the positions of Boyfriend's left and right arrows in the middle of their battle.
  • Miss Exposition: Vinyl Scratch serves this purpose in the freeplay menu by lowering signs to explain the context for the songs. Most importantly, she reveals that Pinkie's and Boyfriend's singing is what "broke Discord out of his eternal imprisonment".
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The title screen has Pinkie trotting through town playing several musical instruments, referencing how she dealt with the Parasprite swarm from Swarm of The Century.
    • "Smile" is based on Pinkie Pie's Smile Song.
    • For a brief section of "Fun", Pinkie dons her rapper outfit from "Testing Testing, 1 2 3", whilst getting close and personal with the fourth wall.
    • The credits for the mod feature a remix of the credits music from the original Friendship is Magic.
    • "Cupcakes" references the fanfic of the same name, in which Pinkie murders her fellow ponies and incorporates their organs into her cupcake recipes. It eponymous song is also mainly based on Ready to Die, which is the same song featured in MisterDavie's video inspired by the fic, Cupcakes HD.
    • "Smile HD" references the fan animation of the same name, in which Pinkie is a murderous psychopath brutally killing each and every member of the Mane 6. As shown in the background, she already murdered Twilight, Applejack and Rarity before reaching Boyfriend, and after the second half of the song, Rainbow Dash has been offed too.
    • "Looking Glass" is based on a fangame called "Story of the Blanks", in which Apple Bloom discovers a village called "Sunny Town", but soon learns its Dark Secret, and now she's at the mercy of the townsponies. The townsponies' spoken lines are taken directly from the game, and Ruby helps Apple Bloom escape at the end.
    • "Babs Sneed" is a "Sneed" cover based on "One Bad Apple", specifically the scene in which Babs kicks the CMC out of their clubhouse and claims it for herself, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon.
    • "Blockhead" is based on Amy Vs Pinkie by AnimatedJames. Like in the original animation, towards the end of the song Pinkie and Amy summon clones of themselves as backup.
  • Pegasus: In addition to Rainbow, Fluttershy, and Scootaloo's mere existance, Girlfriend's pony form is this.
  • Promoted to Playable: Apple Bloom in "Looking Glass" and "Babs Sneed", and Pinkie in "Blockhead".
  • Ruder and Cruder:
    • Twilight drops a few swears here and there, which is something that never happens in the original show. Discord calls her out on this when he shows up.
    Twilight: What the fuck!! Discord?
    Discord: Heavens, Twily. Language.
    • In "Blockhead", Amy and Pinkie say the F-word towards each other at the start of the song.
Amy: F**k you! Sonic is faster!
Pinkie: F**k you! Dashie is 20% cooler!
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Invoked with "Cupcakes" and "Smile HD". Both songs have happy and upbeat instrumentals, but said songs are also based off of fan-works that gave Pinkie Pie Adaptational Villainy, having her kill Girlfriend in the former and the rest of the Mane 6 barring Fluttershy in the latter.
  • The Stoner: Stoney, the pony hanging out with Rarity in "Kush". Rarity is angered by his habits, and tries to give him an ultimatum: Either the weed goes, or she goes. Stoney doesn't seem to care, as under the influence of the weed, his mind's in a completely different place.
Stoney Pony: ...Dude, are we talking horses?
  • Taken for Granite: Like in "The Return of Harmony - Part 2", the Mane 6 use the Elements of Harmony to turn Discord back to stone. The statue is then accidentally smashed by Scootaloo in the true ending.
  • The Unfought: While featured in the Story Mode cutscenes, Twilight is neither opponent nor playable character in any of the mod's songs. This also goes for Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Spike, as they don't get any appearances outside of cutscenes.
  • The Voiceless: Sweetie Belle has no lines in "Babs Sneed", possibly due to the fact that she's on the verge of tears, leaving Apple Bloom and Scootaloo to do all the singing.
  • We Need a Distraction: "Discord" (The song) is this, as Boyfriend keeps Discord busy with the rap battle while Twilight and the rest of the Mane 6 gather the Elements of Harmony in order to turn Discord back to stone.
  • Wham Shot: After Boyfriend decides it's time for him and Girlfriend to leave Ponyville, Pinkie requests that she at least gives him a going-away song. As she requests this, a drop of chocolate milk lands on her snout. Twilight questions how chocolate rain is even possible, but gets cut off by rainstorms of chocolate milk, and who is responsible for it all? Discord!
