Abyss Crossing is a 2022 RPG Maker MV game developed by Suzurin Bell and translated by Bolt Translation.

All worlds are connected to the True World, but the six great spirits of the True World, the Astras, are causing monster outbreaks because they accumulated too much magic power. It's up to the eight heroines to defeat the Astras in order to disperse their magical power, but they'll also need to figure out why the Astras ended up in this state in the first place. Although they all start their journey in pairs with their own routes, all eight of them will eventually meet and join forces.

Can be downloaded from itch. Not to be confused with Animal Crossing.

This game contains examples of:

  • Affably Evil:
    • Siro proves to be a Jerkass God, since she's willing to endanger the multiverse in order to test mortalkind's ability to overcome their vices and to satisfy her lust for combat. However, she's genuinely respectful of the party for overcoming her trials and when she's defeated, she restores the worlds to normal, offers to help Rinne return to her home world, and asks the party to challenge her sister, Kuro.
    • Similarly, Kuro is in on Siro's plans, but is hospitable to the party if they visit her in the Unexplored Labyrinth. Just like her sister, she congratulates the party for holding their own against her.
  • Already Done for You: No matter which of the protagonists the player starts with, they'll recruit another pair of protagonists before the first Astra dungeon. However, the other protagonists are also defeating other Astras in parallel to the player's chosen protagonists. As a result, the player won't be able to fight all the Astras on a single route. When all eight protagonists meet on the ship to Black Island, they'll be pleasantly surprised that they've been unknowingly working towards the same goal.
  • Ambiguously Related: When an Astra boss is defeated, returning to the boss room allows the player to fight an elemental "Ruler" boss that surpasses the Astra in power. Although story states that Astras reincarnate after dying, it's ambiguous if the elemental rulers are those reincarnations or some manifestation of the Astras' released magic power.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Being an Astras means becoming associated with one of humanity's vices, and the Astras have no control over this, which means their presence will cause humans to destroy themselves whether they want it or not. They will also lose their sanity if they take in too much magic power, and there's not much they can do to control this, especially when Kuro is causing them to take in magic power in the first place.
  • Big Bad: The one behind the Astras going out of control is Creation Goddess Siro, who requested Destruction Goddess Kuro to cause chaos in the multiverse. This is so heroes from across the multiverse will band together to defeat the Astras and challenge Siro, granting the latter the epic battle she desires.
  • Blood Knight: Both gods of the True World turn out to be eager to cut their teeth in battle. Siro requested Kuro to concentrate the magical elements into the Astras in order to distort the multiverse, which will result in heroes who have to fight the Astras and confront Siro. After her defeat, Siro tells the party where to find Kuro so that the latter can fight them too. Kuro herself employs five wardens to guard her so that the party will be forced to become strong enough to challenge her.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Although the Goddess of Creation, Siro, loves the people of all worlds, she also has no problem telling Kuro to concentrate magic power into the Astras, causing the entire multiverse to be in danger. She wants to see mortals overcome both physical and mental tribulations to prove their worth, and is pleased when they succeed. She also sees combat as a way to form bonds with the protagonist, and after her boss battle, she treats them as friends who can visit her at any time.
  • Boring, but Practical:
    • For characters that need to use TP support skills frequently, it's more advantageous to just remain in base form rather than release form in order to save TP.
    • Physical skills won't deal elemental damage unless stated otherwise. This property is actually useful when the player gets the ruler weapons, which all have elements tied to them. This allows the player to deal consistent damage to enemies that resist those elements.
  • Brutal Bonus Level: The Unexplored Labyrinth is a multifloored dungeon containing enemies that are stronger than the ones in the final dungeon. While it's available early into the game, it's not recommended to attempt it until after the main story is beaten.
  • Chainsaw Good: The Farewell Chainsaw is an accessory rather than a weapon, and it grants a skill that deals 5 hits, which is similar to how a chainsaw cuts.
  • Chinese Vampire:
    • The Black Wastelands has a Jiangshi enemy that is weak to light like most other undead.
    • The Dark Astra Mona created an undead clone of his sister Reina. Said clone wears a hat that looks similar to the Jiangshis' mandarin hats, as well as a Chinese-style outfit.
  • Critical Hit Class: Luna's passives increase her critical hit rate, which when combined with her high physical attack, makes her the best physical attacker in the party.
  • Dragon Their Feet: The main antagonist, Siro, enlisted the aid of her sister, Kuro, to concentrate magical elements into the Astras, throwing the multiverse into chaos. However, Kuro doesn't assist Siro in the Final Boss fight and instead waits for the party in the Unexplored Labyrinth.
  • Four Is Death: Mona's undead clone of Reina has 44444 HP, on top of looking like a Jiangshi. Mona created this clone to help him destroy the world and rebuild it into his ideal one.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: The Dark Astra Mona wants to destroy and remake the world because he and his sister were killed by slave traders. However, the party points out that in the present, slavery is illegal and that he's just taking out his rage on unrelated people. He acknowledges this to some extent and agrees to an unsteady truce, but only if the party agrees to prevent such atrocities from occuring again.
  • I Let You Win:
    • The Final Boss is Siro, the Goddess of Creation and Order. She wants to test the party's strength, but holds back her power so that she's about on the same level as the Dark and Light Rulers. She holds back less in her optional rematch, where she has 600000 HP compared to her previous 100000, though she does start the party with a buff as a handicap.
    • The Superboss, Kuro, also holds back in her fight due to being the Goddess of Destruction and Chaos, though she doesn't hold back as much as Siro because the party already proved themselves capable of defeating her wardens.
  • It's Personal: The Dark Astra Mona framed Mikoto and Inari for murder in their home village, and they have a personal grudge against him for that.
  • Item Crafting: Monster shards can be combined to form equippable soul items, which provide stat boosts, status resistances, and elemental resistances. Some of them provide fewer statistical bonuses in exchange for granting an extra skill.
  • Jack of All Trades: In the character select screen, Rinne's description states that she's an all rounder. In gameplay, she can learn physical attacks, offensive magic of various elements, and healing magic, all while having balanced stats.
  • Leaked Experience: The player initially starts with two party members, but two more join before the first Astra dungeon in order to form a full party of four. Once they get on the boat to Black Island, four more party members will join, bringing the headcount to eight. Fortunately, the game gives full EXP to all reserve party members.
  • Mage Marksman: Rinne's first party member, Nehan, is a gun-wielder who specializes in magic damage.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Mia has the highest speed, decent attack, and powerful multihit physical skills, but her magic attack is the lowest of the party. She is also the only party member without any default magic damage skills.
  • Military Mage: Nehan is an officer in the True World's Ministry of Magic and specializes in offensive magic.
  • Motive Decay:
    • There was once a blacksmith who needed to make money for his son's medical treatment, and he worked with a fire fairy to make powerful Fairy Swords. However, he couldn't become a blacksmith of the Agastian imperial court while the position is already occupied, so he had the fairy kill the previous court blacksmith. While he got the job, he was so consumed by his ambitions of creating the ultimate weapon that he forgot about his son, who died from illness. The blacksmith then uses the Fairy Sword in order to take his own life. It turns out that the fairy was the Fire Astra, which means she was unwittingly amplifying the blacksmith's ambitions due to her connection with the vice of vanity.
    • Airia originally froze the corpses of abandoned children as a way to honor them, but after taking in too much magic power, she started freezing people for the sake of collecting them like art.
  • The Multiverse: The setting contains multiple worlds, and the out-of-control Astras in the True World are causing monsters to appear in the other worlds. Additionally, the True World is a typical JRPG fantasy world while modern Earth-like world is a non-true world.
  • Nerf: In the 1.39 update, Nehan's buffs no longer restore a portion of the TP spent and Lorin's healing power is lowered.
  • New Game Plus: After beating the game, the player can talk to Siro to rewind time. This resets everyone's levels, but equipment and consumables are carried over and the player can pick a different starting character. They also receive a unique Trinket depending on which character they beat the game as.
  • Pre-existing Encounters: All encounters are random, except for minibosses known as "Floor Enemies" that show up as sinister red orbs. Unlike most examples of this trope, Floor Enemies move in predetermined patterns and don't chase the player.
  • Red Herring: At the Farming Village, the party learns of the Goddess of Creation and Order, Siro, as well as the Goddess of Destruction and Chaos, Kuro. It seems like Kuro is going to be the Big Bad of the game due to the previously defeated Astras mentioning that the party is fighting against chaos. It turns out Kuro did instigate the Astras going out of control, but did so on Siro's request.
  • Respawning Enemies: Floor Enemies will respawn upon reentering the map. This is actually a good thing, since it hastens the process of farming their rare drops.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Averted. Despite turning back time to initiate a New Game Plus, Siro doesn't seem to remember the previous playthrough. Right before the new loop starts, Siro states that the next time she meets the party, it'll be like they're meeting for the first time.
  • Route Boss: The player can't fight all the Astras on a single route, since the protagonists they didn't pick will kill two of the Astras.
  • Squishy Wizard: Alice has the highest magic attack, but the lowest HP and defenses. Unlike fellow offensive mage Nehan, who can buff both offensive and defensive stats, Alice can only buff her own offense.
  • Stronger Sibling: The True World is ruled by twin goddesses, and of the two, Kuro is much stronger than Siro in combat due to being the Goddess of Destruction.
  • Superboss:
    • If the player chooses to fight the Final Boss Siro a second time, she'll get a massive stat upgrade and become the second strongest boss in the game.
    • The boss of the Unexplored Labyrinth, Kuro, is the strongest boss in the game, due to having the highest stats of any boss, self-buffs, and special debuffs to put the party at a constant disadvantage.
  • Super Mode: All playable characters have a "Release" form that boosts their stats and changes their appearance, but costs 10 TP, drains 10 TP every turn, and prevents TP gain. Once they run out of TP, they automatically revert to their base form.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Jagon is a Gorgon who simply wanted to live in peace, but people feared her and tried to kill her. After taking in enough magical power, she snaps and petrifies the Stone Village, and intends to petrify anyone who gazes upon her so that they can't leak her location to the military.
  • Token Good Teammate: Sylfie the Wind Astra and Boldow the Light Astra never directly antagonize humanity and are content to keep to themselves in their own domain, making them the most benevolent of the Astras. However, the two insist on fighting the party to the death in order to determine if the latter can defeat the one manipulating the Astras.
  • Violence is the Only Option: Although the protagonists are able to come to an understanding with most of the Astras, they still have no choice but to kill the Astras in order to release the latters' accumulated magic power, or they'll go insane again. Fortunately, the Astras will eventually reincarnate without excess magic power.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Mikoto has a mediocre stat distribution compared to all other characters, but she has passive TP regen, making it easier for her to use TP skills. She also comes with multihit skills by default, which makes up for her low offensive stats.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The Astras were spirits meant to maintain the balance of the True World, but they took in too much magic power and lost their sanity.
  • White Magician Girl: Lorin specializes in healing and light elemental spells, and has an easygoing personality.
  • Yandere: The Dark Astra Mona, was a human in his past life and witnessed his sister dying before his eyes. As a result, he becomes obsessed with destroying the world and recreating it so that he and a clone of his sister can live in peace.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Nehan revived Rinne from certain death, but since Rinne was reincarnated in a way that works against her world's rules, she can no longer permanently reside in her home world.
