Trivia / The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

Go To

  • Adored by the Network: It's a sequel to a a highly-beloved film based off a highly-popular show; of course Nickelodeon would air it plenty of times as filler or during marathons.
  • Author's Saving Throw: Although the previous movie is unanimously considered the best cinematic outing, many complained that Squidward, Sandy and Mr Krabs were barely in it. The aforementioned trio are given much larger roles in the sequel as a response to this criticism, accompanying SpongeBob to the surface and helping him stop Burger-Beard.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: The Brazilian Portuguese dub has YouTuber Victor Meyniel as the voice of Kyle.
  • Character Outlives Actor: One Japanese TV spot did not feature Squidward in it. This was because his voice actor, Rokurō Naya, had died and they had not yet found a replacement at the time.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • German: SpongeBob Schwammkopf 3D (SpongeBob SquarePants 3D)
    • Polish: SpongeBob: Na suchym lądzie (SpongeBob: On dry land)
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Burger-Beard explains that the Magic Book's powers can only be activated by having the Krabby Patty formula. However, that idea was scrapped. Now things can come true by re-writing the story even without the formula.
    • In one version of the scene where Patrick (not as Mr. Superawesomeness) eats the ice cream, it is on a beach, not in the kid's hand.
    • A scene of Burger-Beard the Pirate in his ship, telling his seagulls a story about him when he was younger.
    • SpongeBob and Plankton time-traveling to the Mesozoic era, where they encounter Patrickosaurus and Squidasaurus Rex.
    • Another time traveling scene had SpongeBob and Plankton visit Bikini Bottom, but the citizens are robots.
    • One part shows Mr. Krabs serving Nasty Patties to the customers.
    • A car chase scene with SpongeBob and Plankton and ends with SpongeBob receiving an F- from Mrs. Puff after crashing.
    • A montage of Mr. Krabs thoroughly cleaning SpongeBob's brain, similar to "Brainwashing".
    • Plankton telling SpongeBob to make Krabby Patties by using his muscles at the Taco Haüs.
  • Development Gag:
    • In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, a deleted scene (storyboarded but not animated) revealed that Sandy was planned to make a cameo appearance on the surface world as a real squirrel. Come this film, and Sandy dons the appearance of a real squirrel in her superhero form.
    • Burger Beard's food cart is called the Barnacle Burger, which was an early name for the Krabby Patty.
    • Squidward inking himself when he's nervous was originally going to be a regular gag on the show, but they could never find a way to do it properly until now.
  • In Memoriam: The film is dedicated to Ernest Borgnine, the original voice of Mermaid Man, who died back in 2012.
  • Kids' Meal Toy: McDonald's sold a set of six straw holder figurines in their Happy Meals. These consisted of Patrick as Mr. Superawesomeness, Squidward as Sour Note, Mr. Krabs as Sir Pinch-a-Lot, Plankton as Plank-Ton, and two different figures of SpongeBob as The Invincibubble.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: There are surprisingly many instances of this in the film;
    • The slo-mo shot of the hot woman that Patrick appears to oogle over (when it's just an ice cream he wants) is not in the film. A bunch of alternate takes of uncut scenes can be seen in the trailers, including Patrick's head with a hole through it. The girl commenting on the superheroes saying, "I think they're in my spin class." is not in the film, nor is Mr. Krabs' line "That pirate's gonna destroy our world!"
    • Despite being featured in the trailer and a few TV commercials, Slash never appears in the movie.
    • In one scene, Burger Beard throws a six pack of soda can plastic rings at Squidward. He gets caught up in them and exclaims "What is this diabolical thing?!" This is Truth in Television, because marine animals do get caught up in these rings and other pieces of manufactured garbage. However, none of this appears in the film proper.
    • The "Thank Gosh it's Monday" musical number doesn't appear in the film at all. A few details, such as the establishing shot of Bikini Bottom, imply that it's an early version of the opening scene, and the gag of Patrick using his belly to talk reappears in the actual opening.
    • A shot of Mr. Superawesomeness' (Patrick's) pants ripping off revealing his underdrawers with him saying, "Nothin' to see here."
    • A shot of SpongeBob saying, "Maybe you should get that checked out" cutting to reveal Patrick has a hole in his head saying, "Why?"
    • Sour Note plays his clarinet and makes farting noises.
    • A line of SpongeBob on the surface saying "Clean it up just clean it up." note
  • The Other Darrin:
    • In the German dub, Squidward got a new voice actor, Tobias Lelle, after his regular voice actor Eberhard Prüter died before the release of the full trailer.
    • His Japanese voice actor Rokurō Naya died less than a month later, so he was replaced with Yoji Ueda. Additionally Patrick is having a different male voice actor for the film (Mitsuaki Kanuka) than the one he had in the first film (Takashi Nagasako).
    • In the SpongeBob HeroPants video game tie-in, Bubbles the Dolphin is voiced by Jeff Bennett instead of Matt Berry.
  • Release Date Change: The film was originally planned for a late 2014 release (possibly to coincide with the show's 15th anniversary and the first movie's 10th anniversary), but was then pushed to February 13, 2015, and then pushed again to February 6, 2015 in order to avoid competition with Fifty Shades of Grey. The irony is that one of the posters for the movie parodies Fifty Shades of Grey. And then these two incidents happened when it came out.
  • Same Language Dub:
    • In the UK version, Kyle and the other seagulls were voiced by Joe Sugg, Alan Carr, Caspar Lee and Stacey Solomon.
    • In the Australia version, Kyle was voiced by Steve Irwin's son Robert.
  • Screwed by the Network: The film was this in Japan. First of all, it was only played at one theater chain, Aeon, who has only a handful of theaters in Japan. Second, it was released at a time when Cinderella (2015) captured the hearts of Japanese audiences - it owes part of its success in Japan to the popularity of Disney in Japan, especially the characters in the short that plays alongside the movie. Third, a few family films based on more popular animated shows had just come out.
  • Sequel Gap: Roughly eleven years passed between the original movie's release and the release of the second movie.
  • Sleeper Hit: It was originally expected to have a $30-40 million opening weekend but ended up grossing more than $50 million. It became the #1 movie in America (knocking American Sniper from the top spot) and not only scored the second-highest opening for an animated film based on a TV show (after The Simpsons Movie), but dethroned Scooby-Doo for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a Live-Action Adaptation of a TV show aimed at children.note  It also made more than the previous film, became the highest-grossing animated Nicktoon-based film (beating Rugrats' record) and the second-highest grossing traditionally animated film not produced by Disneynote  in just two weeks! The success of this film has many fans of traditionally-animated films hoping that this will cause 2D animated films to come back in style. Due to this The Merch of the film sold out and took months to meet demand.
