Trivia / Martha Speaks

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: The "My Fluffy Puppy" Imagine Spot is a clear parody of My Little Pony, and even has a Suspiciously Similar Song version of the classic commercial theme song. Martha's voice actress Tabitha St. Germain has voiced several ponies over the years, including Minty from the G3 series and Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
    • Doubly hilarious when you realize that Martha Speaks was animated by Vancouver-based Studio B. Guess which show that crew would be working on next.
    • Speaking of the aforementioned series, this show once again has Nicole Oliver voicing an elementary school teacher who has students played by Madeleine Peters and Michelle Creber.
  • Adored by the Network: PBS loved promoting Martha Speaks when it was a popular series in 2008 to 2014 it would have promos after a lot of Arthur episodes most stations and its national feed gave it two slots in the morning and afternoon before the PBS Kids Preschool Block and PBS Kids Go!
  • Children Voicing Children: Most of the children were voiced by kids.
  • The Danza: In "Too Many Marthas", Martha meets a young woman named Jennifer (voiced by Jennifer Garner).
  • Dawson Casting: 11-year-old Carolina was voiced by Vanesa Tomasino, who was in her late twenties/early thirties during the show's run.
  • Fake Nationality: Mariela (Helen's mom) and her niece Carolina are of Mexican origin, but are voiced by Canadian Tabitha St. Germain and Salvadoran Vanesa Tomasino, respectively.
  • Production Posse: Ken Scarborough, the head writer, brought over many people who worked with him on Arthur and Curious George, including Peter K. Hirsch, Joe Fallon, Kathy Waugh, Raye Lankford, and many more.
  • Recursive Adaptation: A number of stories from the television show have now been released as books.
  • Referenced by...: The series' lore was the subject of one of Athena P's Lore videos. Athena mentions that she adores Martha.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The show never continued past season 6 due to a lawsuit. Susan Meddaugh, whose books inspired the TV show, sued WGBH and alleged she was cheated out of royalties. As an added rotten cherry on top, the show was funded by Chick-Fil-A, notorious for its homophobia, which Meddaugh is against. The lawsuit also led to the series' final two seasons not being distributed outside of the United States and Canada.
  • Screwed by the Network: As of October 2022, reruns of the show stopped airing on the 24/7 channel due to PBS' broadcasting rights to the series expiring.
  • What Could Have Been: According to Tabitha St. Germain, the role of Martha was originally offered to Ellen DeGeneres.
