Trivia / FernGully: The Last Rainforest

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • Danny Mann voiced Ash (one of the Beetle Boys) and the radio dispatcher.
    • In the European Spanish version, ALL the characters in the film are voiced by one person, comedian Ángel Garó, who did 32 different voices. It set a record for most voices done by a single person in a film.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor:
  • Completely Different Title:
    • In Japan, the film's had a variety of titles over the years. The title of the theatrical release was GreenGully: Eien no Nettai Urinnote , a satellite TV version was titled Mori no Yōsei Crystanote  and a VHS release was titled Little Fairy: Fushigi no Mori no Yōseitachinote . Current releases go by the VHS title minus the Little Fairy part.
    • The film is titled FernGully: Las aventuras de Zak y Crystanote  in Latin America.
    • The French title is Les Aventures de Zak et Crysta dans la Forêt Tropicale de Fergullynote .
  • Creator Couple:
    • Diana Young, who created the FernGully stories, is the wife of producer Wayne Young.
    • The first film was directed by animator Bill Kroyer. His wife, Susan, was the artistic coordinator.
  • Directed by Cast Member: In the Latin American Spanish dub, Francisco Colmenero was the ADR director as well as the voice actor for Hexxus, Crysta's father and Goanna.
  • DVD Commentary: For the DVD release, Bill and Susan Kroyer (the respective director and coordinating art director for the film) as well as art director Ralph Eggleston recorded a commentary detailing the history of the film.
  • Executive Meddling: Attempted by another studio! Disney's Jeffrey Katzenberg implored Robin Williams not to voice Batty Koda since he was also the voice of the Genie for Aladdin, but Williams refused. Katzenberg had already broken his promise to not over-market the Genie or Williams' presence in the film, so Williams didn't especially take kindly to interference in another production that had nothing to do with Disney.
  • He Also Did: Producers Peter Faiman and Wayne Young were the respective director and associate producer on "Crocodile" Dundee.
  • International Co Production: The first film was produced by Kroyer Films, who were assisted by several companies both domestic (including Character Builders and Pacific Title) and overseas (A. Film in Denmark, Wang Film Productions in Taiwan and Saerom, Rough Draft Studios, Hanho Heung-Up and Luk Film in South Korea).
  • Kids' Meal Toy: Pizza Hut sold a set of three collectible cups with illustrations of Crysta, Pips, and Batty Koda, as well as packets of seeds for growing real plants.
  • Saved from Development Hell: Wayne and Diana Young came up with the idea of developing the FernGully stories into a film back in the late 1970s. However, it wouldn't be until the turn of The '80s when they finally decided to travel to Los Angeles to pitch the film.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: FAI Insurance chief executive Rodney Adler wanted to send a positive message for future generations. So, he formed its film division FAI Films to fund FernGully.
  • Voices in One Room: Samantha Mathis, the voice of Chrysta, and Jonathan Ward, the voice of Zak, recorded their dialogue together.
  • What Could Have Been: In Jim Cox's script for FernGully, the opening scene was going to be filmed in live-action before it turned into animation. Some other ideas were storyboarded by the animators, but Bill Kroyer made a last-minute decision to introduce the story using rock art paintings inspired by the art of the First Australians.
