General

Characters

  • Corey and Trina Riffin are named after Corey and Trina Crewe, a Canadian musical duo.
  • Laney Penn's name is an anagram of "Penny Lane", a song by The Beatles.
    • Laney's entire character is stated by Word of God to be one to the character Watts from Some Kind of Wonderful. Like Watts, Laney is a snarky tomboy, has an unrequited crush on the protagonist (who happens to be her best friend), possesses a fairly masculine appearance (including Boyish Short Hair), hangs out with guys more than girls, and is frequently mistaken for something she isn't (though Watts was Mistaken for Lesbian instead). Watts is also plays the drums, which was Laney's originally planned instrument in the early stages of the show's development.
  • Kin and Kon Kujira's names are a reference to King Kong ("Kin Kon") and Godzilla ("Kujira", as in his Japanese name, "Gojira").
  • Word of God confirms Mina's character design to be intentionally based on Velma Dinkley, as evidenced by her sweater and glasses.
  • Grojband's Sitcom Archnemesis, The Newmans, are named after Jerry Seinfeld's own Sitcom Archnemesis.
  • Nick Mallory is named after two characters from the 1982 sitcom Family Ties, Nick Moore and Mallory Keaton.
  • Mayor Mellow's habit of talking to a picture of his deceased mother is confirmed to be inspired by Norman Bates of Psycho fame.
  • Groupies Kate and Allie are named after the title characters of the 1984 sitcom Kate & Allie. Their last names are the same as those of Kate & Allie directors Bill Persky and Linda Day.

Specific Episodes

  • In "Cloudy with a Chance of Malt Ballls", Corey imitates He-Man's famous "By the Power of Grayskull!" sequence and catchphrase to bring Grojband in for the episode's song performance.
  • In "Dance of the Dead", Grojband shouts "Zoinks!" when they first see the zombies approaching them.
  • The Bubble Bunch Band from "No Strings Attached" are an homage to Yo Gabba Gabba!, with Bobby Blue and Randy Red being based on Muno and Plex respectively.
  • In "Math of Kon", the band wears Devo hats with division symbols on top during the episode's song.
    • Also this equation from the same episode: R2=D2.
    • As if the episode's title wasn't a blatant enough reference, there's also the Big Word Shout Trina says before going into Diary Mode.
    • The opening of the math competition has three math nerds trapped in the Phantom Zone.
  • In the episode "Monster of Rock", the title itself comes from Monsters of Rock, a British hard rock and heavy metal music festival head annually from 1980 to 1996.
  • The Monster of the Week in "One-Plant Band" parodies Audrey II.
  • "Creepaway Camp" is an entire episode shout-out to Alice Cooper, with the episode's song even being named "Welcome to My Nightmare".
  • "Dreamreaver" gets its title from a pun on the song "Dreamweaver" by Gary Wright.
    • In Trina's dream world, there are a large number of Nick Mallories resembling the winged monkeys from The Wizard of Oz.
  • The Justice Band in "Super Zeroes" may be a reference to real life band "The Justice Crew".
    • In the same episode, Corey can be seen wearing a purple Pikachu suit in one brief scene.
  • The hammer Corey wields in "A Knight to Remember" looks and functions like Thor's, minus the lightning.
    • A group of wizard LARPers throw water balloons while shouting "Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt!" when ordered by Mina to use their magic against Smashius (who responds with his own "LIGHTNING BOLT!!!" and throws a real one at them).
  • Cyborg!Trina and her drones in "Ahead of Our Own Tone" are a direct homage of the Borg.
    • The episode has two references to the German electronic music group Das Techno Feuer, with the band D-Keizer Zaps mentioned by Kin being direct parodies of them and one verse from the episode's song being "Transmit you back to das techno fires".
  • "Inn Err Face" is basically a parody of Fantastic Voyage.
    • Word of God confirms that Kin and Kon's usage of a yellow minisub to explore Trina's body was a reference to The Beatles' famous song "Yellow Submarine". To drive the point further, it's even been confirmed that that the kid who made the sub was named Ringo.
  • In "Pop Goes the Bubble", Kon shouts "Get in my belly!"
  • Kon biting the head off a (baseball) bat to try and scare the Groupies in "Girl Fest" references a famous incident where Ozzy Osbourne bit off the head of a dead bat (the animal) at one of his concerts.
  • Kin and Kon perform a parody of Schoolhouse Rock! in "The Bandidate", complete with a cameo from an anthropomorphized bill in homage to the famous "I'm Just a Bill" segment.
  • "The Pirate Lounge for Me" reveals Mayor Mellow to have once been known as the great jazz lounge personality, Melonious Monk — an obvious parody of the famous African-American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk.
  • "Soulin' Down The Road" is a shout-out to Christine; the episode was even originally going to be titled "Christrina".
    • In the same episode, Mina does friendly activities with an unconscious Trina à la Weekend at Bernie's.
    • The Motivations, a 50s African-American soul music quartet mentioned by Kin and Kon, are parodies of The Coasters.
  • In "For Hat and Country", Corey references Ronald Reagan's famous line when he says "Mayor Mellow, tear down this wall!"
  • The "Solo Shredder" video game featured in "Dueling Buttons" is a parody of the Guitar Hero franchise.
    • Savage Fred is an obvious parody of Fred Savage.
    • The episode's title references Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith's 1954 Bluegrass composition "Duelling Banjos".
