Team Epsilon

    In General

Team Epsilon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tan_2266_4r_1_1024x1024.jpg
The Season 1 roster. Vivian, Norah, Dynesh, Glenn and Cheong.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Played With. Several of the women on the team have Love Interests who turn out to be criminals and either choose to stay with them and risk their career or more often stay steady to catch them.
    • Vivian dates Big Bad Jackson and has a child with him in Season 1. When she learns that he is leader of Angel Syndicate, she deals him a seemingly fatal shot in the final episode. However, it's still clear she had feelings for him as she lays a bouquet of flowers where he fell into the water after the tragedy.
    • In Season 3, Melissa dates Leonard, one of her old schoolmates but it is discovered that he has been attending sex parties laden with illegal drugs. Heartbroken, she pretends to remain faithful to allay possible suspicions until he is arrested at one of the sex parties.
  • Badass Crew: An elite ICA team with plenty of arrests under their belt, having experience with all manner of criminal syndicates, illegal clubs and overstayers. In a low crime country like Singapore, accomplishing so much in the span of a few years definitely earns them the title.
  • Interservice Rivalry: With other law enforcement agencies like the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and Internal Security Bureau (ISB), all resenting and sour that an elite team has such rein over crimes the immigration agency should not have power over. Inter-agency liaisons are very important to Team Epsilon as a result.
  • The Squad/Command Roster: For the high-risk, undercover missions they do, Team Epsilon has a litany of the typical archetypes associated with these two tropes, straddling the line between police and military. The roster changes with each season.
    • The Captain: Glenn, the hard-boiled, aloof but caring team leader. Previously, it was Edmund Seng before his death.
    • Number Two: Cheong, the veteran who deputizes for Glenn and clashes with him due to different command styles (also The Lancer). Kara shares this role from Season 2 onwards as Glenn's confidante.
    • The Heart: Vivian, the Friendly Sniper who has hope for Glenn as the new leader and holds the team together when in difficult straits. Kara later shares this role and assumes it in full after Vivian's death.
    • Mr. Fixit: Norah, the communications and technical expert who handles Mission Control and information.
    • The Social Expert: Dynesh, the comedic, entertaining Butt-Monkey of the team who usually does undercover work with his amazing conversational wit.
    • Sixth Ranger: Several who join the team in later seasons. Matthew becomes a fixture in later seasons, while Ai Ling, Melissa and Sophie are Played Straight as one-season members.
    • The Superior: Esther Ong in Season 1, who clashes with Glenn for his Cowboy Cop methods and inability to lead (a farce to get Jackson to fess up). Calvin Tan replaces her from Season 2 onwards and is at odds with Glenn for the same reasons.
  • True Companions: Even as they marry, retire and (like Glenn) go fugitive overseas, Team Epsilon always sticks up for and will protect one another at all costs, even their careers.

Main members

    Glenn

DSP Glenn Chua

Glenn in Season 4
Played by: Carl Ng (Season 1-3), Jack J. Yang (Season 4)

Team Epsilon's new leader and the series' main protagonist. Glenn's cold, perfectionist attitude clashes with his new team, but he eventually becomes their most valued colleague through time, effort and lot of shared experiences.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The leader of Team Epsilon and a senior ICA officer, Glenn will let his target know his position isn't just for show. He can fight on equal footing with several gangsters swarming him and still come out on top.
  • Consummate Professional:
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prone to moments of dry humour, especially towards Cheong and Dynesh.
  • Everyone Can See It
  • The Leader:
  • Not So Above It All: He can be very chill when he wants to.
  • Workaholic: Compared to the easygoing Edmund, Glenn seems to be on the job constantly. Even when making time for himself when boxing with Jackson and vacationing in Thailand, Glenn will either be brooding on whatever case he's working on or pursuing "out of office" endeavours like interviewing suspects and searching places which happen to be on his way. This is lampshaded by the rest of Team Epsilon many, many times.

    Kara

DSP Kara Yeo

Supporting Characters

    Esther

SUPT Esther Ong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2021_01_05_44.png
Played by: Constance Song

Team Epsilon's superior, the Deputy Director of Intelligence for ICA.

    Marianne

DSP Marianne Chong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2021_01_05_23.png

Team Epsilon's liaison to the regular police and Glenn's ex-wife.

  • Amicable Exes: Downplayed. Marianne is not exactly the best of friends with her ex-husband, citing his coldness as one of the reasons she filed for divorce. However, she still cares for Glenn, checking up on him and attempting to help him cope with his depression in Season 1 despite not knowing the cause. Glenn keeps pushing her away, so her efforts are for naught.
  • Fair Cop: Marianne is a very pretty lady who also happens to be a high-ranking police superintendent capable of kicking all the ass.
  • Friend on the Force: Like Kara after her, Marianne is the Singapore Police Force liaison to Team Epsilon (from the ICA [Immigration & Checkpoints Authority]) and gives them the access needed to collaborate in immigration cases under the purview of regular police.

    Rashid

ASP Rashid Zakaria

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2021_01_05_7.png
Played by: Sani Hussin

An CNB (Central Narcotics Bureau) officer and one of Cheong's old friends.

  • Informed Kindness: Cheong describes Rashid as an old friend who's very cooperative and friendly. Every scene after that description suggests otherwise, since he's shown doing nothing but making cynical arguments towards Glenn.
  • Jerkass to One: Rashid doesn't seem to act abrasive or confrontational towards anyone but Glenn, presumably because his tip-offs don't always lead to results.
  • Sour Supporter: One of Team Epsilon's extra-agency associates who helps them a lot, yet doesn't have anything good to say about them, least of all Glenn who he thinks is bad luck.

    Edmund

DSP Edmund Seng Yue Fong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2021_01_05_8.png
Played by: Alan Tern

The previous leader of Team Epsilon, killed in action at the beginning of Season 1.

  • Benevolent Boss: Team Epsilon reminisces about Edmund as a kind, supportive leader who treated his colleagues like old friends, often treating them to lunch or after-work dinner on him.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How he is killed, via sniper rifle shot to the head.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Edmund was greatly loved by his teammates (especially Cheong) and the upper brass in ICA, which only serves to contrast him from the colder, more secretive Glenn even more.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Only manages a few minutes of screentime before he is killed, and even though his mother and fiancée are still alive and play a role in the story, we never see much of Edmund again.

    Calvin

SUPT Calvin Wong

    Victor

DSP Victor de Cruz

    Jonah

Antagonists

Angel Syndicate

    Jackson

Jackson Goh / Jackson Limthongkul / Virote Boonprasong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/430988_117913301668360_1091410797_n.jpg
Played by: Jourdan Lee

The illegitimate younger son of Marcus Limthongkul, Glenn's best friend, and main antagonist of Season 1. Presumed dead, he returns as Virote Boonprasong in Season 3 to exact revenge on Glenn.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Anything that can be seen as a redeeming trait of his is up for debate.
    • Does he really consider Glenn Chua a friend, or was he just using him, or even still considered him a friend while manipulating him? While their first meeting was definitely staged on his part, Jackson seemed to genuinely enjoy Glenn's company in childhood, up to and during the first season. For all his big talk about only showing Glenn the persona he wanted to see, Jackson visibly hesitated to shoot Glenn despite having a clear headshot. And in Season 3's finale, Virote seemingly lets Glenn and Sidney send Jonah back home to Singapore without any fuss, despite claiming immediately after that he would come back for the boy. At best the only person he truly cares for his son Jonah, if not anybody else.
    • Was his Big Brother Instinct for Noi real or just an excuse to gain power for himself? In Season 1, he acts like a better big brother to her than Ricky who has her fiancé murdered for being an ICA officer. Jackson seizes on her desire to avenge Edmund to engineer Ricky's death and his rise to power, and Noi is horrified at what she inadvertently started when Marcus is confined to his own home. In Season 3, Virote engineers Noi's breakout seemingly out of charity to reunite her with their family in Thailand, but Glenn reminds her of Virote's previous treachery and tells her that he plans to install her as Angel's puppet leader to get back in the Limthongkul's good graces. Given that it was fellow Chessmaster Glenn who tells her that. It's unknown if Virote meant to do so for either or both reasons, and his motivations are never explicitly revealed.
  • Big Bad: Of Season 1. Jackson lets his brother Ricky handle the dirty work in Singapore while he plots behind the scenes to have him disgraced, and attempts to corrupt his best friend Glenn into working for him. Meanwhile, after Marcus denies him headship of Angel for acting against his own family, he stages a takeover and confines Marcus to his mansion home. His master plan is to use his apprentice, a master computer programmer to produce fake passports and with Glenn's help access ICA's biometric identity system to eliminate the country's border security.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Miguel in Season 3, as his partner-in-crime and erstwhile brother helping him establish roots in Singapore. The alliance is heavily strained due to Virote's lack of communication and treacherous ways, culminating in both Big Bads turning against each other in the season finale.
  • The Chessmaster: Jackson is talented at manipulation and planning, having run circles around Team Epsilon and his own allies at the same time for his own agendas, rivalling his own brother in that department.
    • In Season 1, he uses his reputation to further Angel's operations in Singapore without arousing suspicion. While at it, he paints himself to Marcus as the more competent son and proof that he should become Angel's new leader, sabotaging Ricky's operations. By season's end, he has outed his father's old betrayal to Angel's executive members and assumes control with nearly full support, manipulated Noi into revealing Ricky as the mastermind behind Edmund's killer to Team Epsilon and set him up to die. The only thing he fails to do is convert Glenn to his side and gain access to Singapore's biometric passport system, since Glenn beat him at his own game by faking the leak.
    • In Season 3, Virote deliberately sabotages Miguel's operations to gain control of his syndicate and the Filipino underworld, colludes with Noi to break her out of prison, regain access to Angel and kidnap his son to raise him as her successor. However, his Chronic Backstabbing Disorder comes back to bite him when Miguel discovers his treachery and kidnaps Jonah himself to get back at him for setting up their first meeting and killing his fiancée Tala.
  • Evil All Along: Glenn goes in to stop Jackson because he believes he can be redeemed, but the latter mockingly tells him that their first meeting was based on a lie. Jackson really did steal money from a student's wallet and used Glenn to cover for him by disguising it as a bullying attack for his Thai heritage.
  • Evil Former Friend:
  • False Friend: Played Straight for most of Season 1 with Jackson manipulating Glenn into being his mole in the ICA.... only for him to hesitate when he has a point-blank shot at him, hinting that he still has a soft spot for Glenn.
  • Final Boss: After Ricky is killed in the penultimate episode of Season 1, "False Faces", Jackson is Epsilon's final obstacle to eliminating Angel's presence in Singapore. He as Virote again assumes the role in Season 3 after Miguel is thwarted, but dies for good shortly after.
  • The Heavy: For Season 1, where he's playing second fiddle to his brother Ricky and father Marcus. while he gets Glenn framed and convicted to stall his investigations.
  • Killed Off for Real: In the Season 3 finale, Virote is shot in the heart by Glenn after a brutal No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. Glenn seizes his dropped gun after a several storey fall and is quicker on the draw than his frenemy is.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: He finally gets Glenn humiliated and even charged for murder as he wanted, except it was his murder.
  • Wealthy Philanthropist: Fronts as one along with being a club owner to fend off suspicion. He becomes especially known for giving generously to his old primary school where he met Glenn.

    Noi

Noi Limthongkul

Played by: Dusita Anuchitchanchai

Daughter of Marcus, younger sister of Jackson and Ricky, and ex-fiancée of Edmund Seng.

  • Arc Villain: Of Season 2, which sees her become leader of Angel, kill Vivian and kidnap Jonah to raise as heir to the Limthongkul family.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: She is the fiancée of Edmund Seng, an ICA officer who once led Team Epsilon, while being part of a criminal syndicate specializing in drug smuggling and human trafficking. Her father is none too happy with this, leading Ricky to assassinate Edmund.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even as her
  • Heel–Face Turn:

    Marcus

Marcus Limthongkul

The leader of Angel Syndicate.

    Ricky

Ricky Limthongkul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2021_01_05_59.png

Marcus's eldest son and Jackson's half-brother who oversees Angel's operations in Singapore.

  • Arc Villain: Of Season 1, having been directly or indirectly behind all of the crimes committed in every episode, including ordering the hit on Edmund Seng, posing as an anonymous tip by sending Glenn SMSes, and funding Joe's schemes with illegal immigrant women.
  • Attack on the Heart: Subverted. Ricky is seemingly killed by a point-blank shot to the heart from Dynesh's gun, but it actually missed. Jackson set Ricky's gun to backfire on him if used, thus killing him and securing Jackson's rise to power.
  • Big Brother Instinct: In spite of his many flaws, Ricky deeply cares for his sister Noi and will do almost anything to protect her and by extension the family. He orders the hit on her fiancé Edmund because he is an ICA officer who would never be accepted into the Limthongkul family since he could compromise Angel. The only problem is, she doesn't want any of his help.
  • Rank Up: Ricky is promoted to head of Angel Syndicate halfway through Season 1. He doesn't get to enjoy his position before Team Epsilon is tipped off to his identity and he is killed, with Jackson left to pick up the pieces.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When his cover is blown by Marcus' old partner, Ricky is forced to evacuate himself and his girlfriend to Thailand by boat. The attempt doesn't succeed because a vengeful Noi (with Jackson's aid) anonymously tips Team Epsilon off to the plan. The kicker?

    Samak

Samak Pongsara

Noi's childhood friend and later husband, set to be Marcus' successor as head of Angel.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's never confirmed whether Samak's feelings for Noi are genuine. His caring behaviour when in her presence seems to be sincere (Childhood Friend Romance notwithstanding), but he exploited and even killed those close to her, including Marcus for pure opportunism. Would he have killed Marcus and sent Noi's family members into prostitution if he truly loved her, or did he simply believe he could do so without impacting their marriage?
  • Arc Villain: Of the first half of Season 2, being behind Cheong's accusations of molestation and being head of Angel Syndicate. Noi later kills him to become the Big Bad of the second half.
  • Arranged Marriage: With Noi as part of Marcus's Last Request. Samak is a good sport, telling Noi to play along even if she doesn't love him to make her father happy, which she agrees to. On his end, his love for Noi seems genuine.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Samak acts caring towards Noi and is seemingly a perfect husband to her, but towards everyone else he is a cold-hearted, self-serving bastard. He uses his marriage to sell members of the Limthongkul family into prostitution, bribes most of Angel's enforcers into following him and when Marcus finds out, kills the poor man and assumes control of Angel. Season 3 ramps it to up to eleven, revealing that he knew Jackson's survived Vivian's gunshot and kept it secret from Noi, sending a hit squad to kill Jackson in Indonesia to cement his place as Angel's leader.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Claims to have loved Noi since they were friends in childhood.
  • The Corrupter: Not directly, but coercing Noi into his plans for Team Epsilon and killing her father is what sets Noi down the path of evil for good.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: For the first half of Season 2, Samak becomes the new incoming head of Angel following the deaths of both Ricky and Jackson, effectively leading the syndicate as Marcus dies of prostate cancer. Marcus revokes this privilege when he learns that Samak sold Limthongkul relatives into prostitution, but Samak kills Marcus almost immediately afterwards and seizes control of Angel.
  • Evil Is Petty: Arranges for Cheong to be framed for molestation and Team Epsilon scandalized because, of all things, Glenn Chua interrupted his wedding.
  • External Combustion: Samak is killed by a car bomb planted in his golf equipment by Noi as revenge for killing her father.
  • Number Two: He is effectively Marcus's deputy and appointed successor through his marriage to Noi, and leads Angel as his father-in-law is confined to a hospital bed with cancer.
  • The Starscream: Samak kills Marcus by smothering him with a pillow after the latter refuses to grant him leadership of Angel for selling his relatives into prostitution. He does so to prevent this secret from leaking and also so it is not revealed that he has lost Marcus's confidence. He fails to hide audio recordings of this incident well enough however, and this gets him killed by Noi as revenge.

    Joe

Joe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2021_01_05_15.png

A low-ranking member of Angel Syndicate working under Ricky in Singapore, and the one who killed Edmund.

  • Arc Villain: Of the first half of Season 1. All of the operations busted by Team Epsilon during that time are connected to him in some way or another. His murder of a prominent advocate for protecting immigrant women eventually gets him arrested by Glenn in a nightclub.
  • The Alcoholic: Drinks and whores in Geylang so much that it makes him do stupid things. Even Ricky has to order him to lay off before he unwittingly sabotages Angel's operations.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: He's a fan of this when victims don't give him what he wants. Season 1, Episode 4 "Family Ties" sees Chow's partner gets his right arm mangled by his hammer for not giving up information.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: How he dies, stabbed in the back of the throat by a Malaysian prisoner who immediately kills himself afterwards.
  • Only One Name: Only ever referred to as Joe. He arguably could also have the Limthongkul surname as Ricky's 'cousin', but it's unknown if they are blood related.
  • Smug Snake: Joe is known for being immensely arrogant because he pulled off a few big operations in famously low-crime Singapore. As a result, Jackson wants him kicked out before he becomes a liability but Ricky's defense and Marcus supporting Ricky makes this all but impossible until his arrest.
  • Starter Villain: The first member of Angel Syndicate that Team Epsilon confronts, he is behind several of the crimes they have busted throughout the first half of Season 1, including the murder of Edmund Seng, their previous leader as revealed in the penultimate episode of Season 1.
  • You Have Failed Me: Jackson has Joe killed in captivity after it becomes clear he is going to confess to the police, and has his assigned lawyer eliminated too for good measure.
