Recap / Whats New Scooby Doo S 2 E 3 High Tech House Of Horrors

Go To

The gang ends up going to a future fair in Omaha; however, the main attraction the house of the future is closed due to the mysterious disappearance of a teenager. The creator of the house, Professor Ostwald, tells the gang that nothing is wrong; however, after Daphne disappears, the gang has to go back to the house to search for her, but are soon locked in along with the Blather Brothers and the reality TV star, Horatio Hidalgo.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Attention Whore: S.H.A.R.I. turns out to be the culprit; she's sore that Professor Ostwald is getting all the glory for the house. However, she's not just a Glory Hound. Any attention pleases her, even if it's trying to escape her or destroy the house. The group ultimately destroys her by ignoring her until she short-circuits.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: While doing a tour of the house, Professor Ostwald says that S.H.A.R.I., the AI that runs the house, is the first of her kind in that she can think for herself. This means she can develop a need for attention.
  • Death by Irony: Fred short-circuits Jeeves by locking him in a bathroom and turning the water on. This was the same tactic that S.H.A.R.I. used to kidnap the teenager in the first scene.
  • Disguised in Drag: Scooby gets disguised as a female robot using some metal odds and ends and a blonde wig.
  • Drowning Pit: In the opening scene, S.H.A.R.I. traps one of the teenagers touring the house in the bathroom and turns on the faucets, causing the water to reach past her head. However, she turns up alive later.
  • Either/Or Title: This episode's title is "High-Tech House of Horrors", but it also goes as "High Tech House of the Future", which is the exhibit's in-universe name.
  • Evil Laugh: S.H.A.R.I. does a mechanical cackle multiple times during the episode.
  • Heart Beats out of Chest: Scooby, disguised as a female robot, flirts with Jeeves to lure him into Fred's trap. A heart on a spring pops out of the smitten robot's chest as he dashes towards "her."
  • Mythology Gag: Shaggy and Scooby are presumably killed when crushed into cubes by the trash compactor, only for them to be completely unharmed. Shaggy notes that they're used to hiding in small spaces, bringing to mind their iconic "filing cabinet" gag from the classic series where they both fit inside a drawer of sorts.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: Subverted. The gang initially suspects some sort of hacker or Jeeves, perhaps the professor, reality TV star Horatio Hidalgo, or one of the brothers. However, it's actually S.H.A.R.I., the AI inside the house. That's right: the haunted house itself was the villain the whole time.
  • Sheathe Your Sword: Velma discovers that S.H.A.R.I., the house's AI, thrived on getting attention from people by attacking and terrorizing them, and deduced that the way to defeat it is not to proactively find a way to deactivate it, but to simply refuse to give it what it wants. As such, Velma directs everyone to sit on the floor and do nothing, prompting the AI to scream at them to pay attention to it until it overloads and fries its circuitry.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: When Velma gets shoved inside a makeover machine by Daphne. Parodied slightly in her reaction.
Velma: I feel like I'm wearing ten pounds of makeup and these shoes are so tight and...
    Sees herself in the mirror
    Velma: Wow, I'm hot!
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Reality TV star Horatio Hidalgo, famous for placing himself into dangerous situations, lets out a high-pitched squeal when S.H.A.R.I unleashes a wind indoors.
  • Stealing the Credit: S.H.A.R.I. claims that Professor Ostwald stole the credit, because she's the one behind all the wondrous things in the house. She kidnapped the gang and several tourists to get an audience.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: Jeeves' pinpoint "eyes" become Xs after he's electrocuted.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: The gang defeats the supercomputer by just sitting down. Velma had realized it wanted attention. When they don't give it to it, the computer suffers a breakdown.
  • Wolf Whistle: When Jeeves sees an attractive, flirtatious female robot (really Scooby in a wig and metal costume), he unleashes a whistle, spins around, and rushes towards "her."
