Recap / Total Drama: "Newf Kids on the Rock"

Go To

The next challenge takes place in Newfoundland, Chris's birthplace. The sole remaining member of Team Victory, DJ wants to leave the competition, but Alejandro and Heather have other plans. The challenge ends in a tie between two teams, but no elimination takes place.

Tropes:

  • Accordion to Most Sailors: The contestants have to sing while rowing to the Newfoundland shore. Alejandro starts out the song, a pastiche of sea shanties, by playing an accordion.
  • Actually Quite Catchy: Still trying to get eliminated, DJ's the last member of his team and plans to get eliminated by refusing to sing during the song, which would get him kicked out. However, Heather is attempting to get him on her side, and tries to make him sing during "Sea Shanty". After spending most of the song in silence, he finally breaks down:
(singing) No you can't catch me, with a sea shanty! (speaking) WHAT? Oh no...
  • Bait-and-Switch Silhouette: Courtney and Gwen spot a silhouette on a rock outcrop near shore that resembles Duncan. They climb up the outcrop ready to berate Duncan for leaving the show, but once near they realize it's only a peculiarly shaped rock.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: The reason why Noah and Owen realizes that this show is not for kids, because Tyler and DJ kiss a fish on the lips.
  • Brick Joke: When trying to spy on the teams in economy class, Heather issues a ticket to Owen from the "fashion police" regarding his smelly socks. Said socks are later used by Heather in the winning teams clam chowder.
  • The Cameo: Ezekiel once again turns up in a lightly-silhouetted appearance in the cargo hold.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Cody packed 9 toothbrushes, though it doesn't stop Sierra from taking every single one of them for herself.
  • Curse Cut Short: Courtney and Heather get into a leadership quarrel and inevitably Courtney brings up the fact that she is a C.I.T. Heather shoots back that she's more like a B-I-T-C- when Gwen interrupts to tell them they're holding up the team.
  • Determinator: Heather went to extreme lengths to try to rope DJ into an alliance with her, going so far as to wait for him to have a turn in the confessional.
Heather: F.Y.I. Izzy likes to sing "Pop goes the weasel" when she… ugh.
  • Friendship Moment: After Courtney gets berated by Heather for losing the challenge, Gwen offers to take the blame instead.
  • Funny Foreigner: Chris is from Newfoundland and visits the island as the location of the day's challenge. He is assisted by his cousin Jerd McLean, a short man with a thick beard, who enters the cabin making use only of the lower half of the Dutch door while a jaunty tune plays. Jerd takes charge of the middle part of a three-part challenge run by authentically uttering a Newfoundland saying with his heavy accent. It's up to the contestants to figure out what the saying is.
  • Hot Sauce Drinking: Team CIRRRRH and Team Victory get to move on to the second part of the challenge. It starts with the requirement for at least one team member to drink a whole jug of apple cider vinegar. Izzy and Owen give it a go for Team CIRRRRH and while Owen, as an extreme omnivore, likes the taste, Izzy is left gasping for air. DJ of Team Victory is tricked into believing he's being giving cough medicine and only ends up with a worse cough from the vinegar.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Heather put Owen's socks into the clam chowder that Alejandro's team and DJ won. In the confessional, he's shown aggressively brushing his teeth and ranting, "Malvada bruja! Malditos incompetentes!," which roughly translates to, "Wicked witch! Damned incompetence!"
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Jerd covers his eyes when Tyler and DJ each kiss a fish for the challenge and get a little too into it.
  • It's All My Fault: In the confessional, Courtney acknowledges that losing was her fault due to being distracted by Duncan. She then realizes that she admitted this on television and immediately demands the tape back.
  • Lie Back and Think of England: How Alejandro urges Tyler to go through his challenge to make out with a fish is just close his eyes and only think of Lindsay. It works.
  • Not So Above It All: In the end, Chris declares all of this a rewards challenge, due to being moved to be back in his native land.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the band New Kids on the Block.
  • Rule of Three: The confessionals of Heather, Gwen, and Courtney; see Running Gag below.
Heather/Gwen/Courtney: I want that tape back! Give me the tape! How do you open this thing?!
  • Running Gag: Heather, Gwen and Courtney accidentally said something that shouldn't be said on TV about guys, and tried to take off the tape that filmed it.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Just like in "The Am-AH-Zon Race", Team Victory's win here ends up being rendered pointless by the fact that the episode's a non-elimination. Slightly lessened though since DJ being the sole member of the team by this point barely makes it an actual team and it's a shared victory with Team Chris is Really, Really, Really, Really Hot.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Izzy sings "Pop Goes the Weasel" on the toilet.
    • Gwen compares Heather to the Grinch.
  • Smelly Feet Gag: While spying on Team CIRRRRH, Heather falls down at Owen's feet and remarks that they reek. The experience inspires her later on to stuff his socks in Alejandro's clam and fish chowder bowl, which Alejandro takes several bites from before learning what Heather did.
  • Springtime for Hitler: After repeatedly losing due to assorted misfortunate, DJ resolves to deliberately lose this time so that he can go home. Much to his frustration, he keeps scoring wins instead, either because of outside help or just dumb luck.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Courtney and Gwen both say somehing they shouldn’t in the confessional and try to steal the tape for it.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Chris and his cousin Jerd, have almost identical faces.
  • You Should Have Died Instead: Played With. Just as most of team CIRRRRH attempts to recruit DJ, Tyler blames him for Lindsay’s elimination, even though the latter was trying his hardest to purposely lose, since he couldn’t vote himself off. DJ just shoots a Death Glare and points this out.
Tyler: Why couldn’t you lose so Lindsay could still be here!
  • Wham Shot: One of Al revealing that he faked the un-cursing fish, along with several others, noting how long it took to draw the patterns on them.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: In the confessional, Gwen criticizes Heather for letting her feelings for Alejandro mess up her game. She goes on to explain that she knows what she's talking about, because last season her relationship with Duncan made things difficult for her. Her own words startle her because it was Trent she was in a relationship with. Gwen tries to correct herself, but because she's not convincing she attempts to break open the camera to get the tape.

More Like A B-I-T-C...

Courtney informs Heather that she is a C.I.T., only for Heather to tell her that she's a bitch. This is interrupted by Gwen.

How well does it match the trope?
