Recap / Tiny Toon Adventures S 3 E 16 Sports Shorts

Go To

The sixteenth episode of the third season of Tiny Toon Adventures, and the nintety-fourth episode overall.

Buster and Babs present two sports cartoons.

Short One: "Minister Golf"

While playing a game of miniature golf with Buster, Babs, and Hamton, Plucky tells them about the time he first played mini-golf as a baby with his father.

Short Two: "The Undersea World of Fifi"

Fifi is running an expedition across the ocean to find C Monkeys. Elmyra has been picked to dive for them. After a long walk on the seabed, she finds their hideout. Elmyra's attempts to catch a sea monkey ruin Fifi's expedition and ultimately brings the universe to apocalypse.

This episode provides examples of:

Overall:

  • Credits Gag: Appearing as Sea Monkeys - Brine Shrimp & Recipe For Brine Shrimp La Fume note
  • Non-Indicative Title: Only the first short in this episode deals with sports (miniature golf, specifically, which is the loosest definition of "sport" as it is). The double-length short that accompanies it is a parody of Jacques Cousteau films.
  • Two Shorts: This is the eighth and final episode to use this format.

Minister Golf:

  • Baby See, Baby Do: After hitting his golf ball but failing to get a hole in one at the windmill, Mr. Duck says "Darn it, I missed!" As Baby Plucky hits his golf ball, he keeps saying "Darn it, I missed!"
  • Butt-Monkey: Mr. Duck. He keeps getting hit by Baby Plucky's golf ball whenever Baby Plucky tries to get it in the hole, and when they reach Hole 18, he is revealed to be on crutches. Near the end of the short, when Baby Plucky wins 1,000 free games of miniature golf, he gets buried in an avalanche of golf balls.
  • Crippling Castration: At one point, Baby Plucky accidentally hits his father hard in the groin with a golf ball. After the ball goes down the hole, we get this line:
Mr. Duck: Congratulations, Son! You're going to be an only child!
  • Early-Bird Cameo: This short premiered on the short-lived spin-off, The Plucky Duck Show on October 3, 1992, before airing on Tiny Toon Adventures on November 13, 1992.
  • The Faceless: Mr. Duck.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end of the short, Plucky in his normal age distracts Buster, Babs, and Hamton so he can cheat without them looking. He then says, "My ball go down the hole!" and sucks his thumb.
  • Look Behind You: Baby Plucky tells his dad there is a helicopter to distract him while he throws his ball into the gingerbread house, and a blimp to distract him while he throws his ball into the windmill. When Baby Plucky tries this a third time by telling his dad to look at a rocket ship, he doesn't fall for it. At the end of the short, Plucky in his normal age distracts Buster, Babs, and Hamton by telling them to look at Julia Roberts.
  • Malaproper: Baby Plucky pronounces "miniature" as "minister", even after his father corrects him.
  • Mini-Golf Episode: This short is about the first time Plucky played mini-golf as a baby with his father.
  • Rule of Three: Baby Plucky attempts to distract his father three times so he can cheat while the latter is distracted. First, telling him to look at a helicopter, then to look at a blimp, then finally, to look at a rocket ship. The first two times, Mr. Duck is distracted, but the third time, he doesn't fall for it.
  • Spinoff Babies: This is the third and final short to focus on an infant version of Plucky Duck, and once again, an infant version of Babs is shown in this short.

The Undersea World of Fifi:

  • Affectionate Parody: of The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: At the very end, Elmyra does her imitation of Baby Plucky.
Elmyra: Oooh, ocean go down da hooole.... Planet go down da hoooooole.... Universe go down da hoooooooole....
  • Butt-Monkey: Elmyra. In much of the first act of the short, she gets beaten up by various sea creatures. She also gets dragged along by a C Monkey after she catches it.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: Just before the first act of the short ends, Elmyra follows one of the C Monkeys into a trench, where it is so dark, all that can be seen are her eyes. Elmyra then complains about having to do a "Stinky eyeball-in-the dark" routine.
  • Everyone Has Standards: For being such an animal lover, when it comes to sea life Elmyra is notably pickier on what she thinks is cute, finding some of their behavior actually shocking such as when she witnesses some fish eating one another, and not gushing over some of the more dangerous fish. She also expresses annoyance when some neon sea life starts mocking her in the cave, and when she comes across a scary big red fish with sharp teeth in a clam, she screams and quickly shuts it.
  • Fun with Flushing: The short ends with Elmyra finding a drain plug at the bottom of the ocean. She unplugs it, and it drains the ocean, planet, and even the universe. As it does this, she says the same line Baby Plucky normally does.
  • Hockey Mask and Chainsaw: The Chainsawfish dons a hockey mask before it cuts the seaweed and tickles Elmyra.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Fifi remarks that although she and the others could simply buy C Monkeys like other folks, they instead "spent millions of dollars on a big boat to see them for free".
  • Mirror Routine: A C Monkey does this with Elmyra when she looks in the mirror.
  • Mock Cousteau: Fifi naturally does one hunting for the "Mysterious C Minkee (monkey)". Only slightly subverted in that Fifi stays high and dry with Plucky and Hamton in the boat while Elmyra does all the chasing.
  • Non-Indicative Title: Despite this episode's title being The Undersea World of Fifi, this episode is mostly narrated by Fifi, who only makes a brief appearance. Elmyra is the real star of this short, spending much of her time underwater hunting for C Monkeys.
  • Porn Stash: The information regarding the sea monkeys came from an advertisement on the back of a porn magazine. Fifi snatches it off of Hamton and throws it overboard.
  • Sea Aping: This short features Elmyra going on a deep-diving exploration to find sea monkeys (referred to as "C Monkeys"). They are shown as purple finned aquatic monkeys on par with the size of actual monkeys. Fifi mentions that even though she could just order some C Monkeys from the back of a catalog, she decides instead to spend millions of dollars on a big boat to see them for real.
  • Shout-Out: One of the sea creatures Elmyra finds is an MC Hammer-head Shark. The shark promptly uses its hammerhead on her.
  • Smart Ball: While not exceptionally so, Elmyra is much more savvy in this segment than she usually is, such as recognizing when a C Monkey is pulling the Mirror Routine on her but doesn't quite figure out how they're doing it, or complaining about the "eyeball-in-the-dark" routine in a cave just when she was getting close to catching a C Monkey.
  • Sword Fight: Elmyra and a C Monkey do this with swordfishes.
