Go To

Airdate: 1991

When Donna comes to visit the Evergreen Forest, Lisa is pressured into smoking cigarettes. Meanwhile, Cyril tries to join an exclusive golf club.

Join the Club! contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: Don't give in to peer pressure.
  • Anthropomorphic Vice: The skunk in Lisa's daydream represents the hazards of smoking tobacco.
  • Brick Joke: When Lisa gives Bert the doorknocker that once belonged to Cyril, Donna deems it a very gaudy color she calls "Yucko Pink". At the end of the episode, Cyril helps Cedric paint his clubhouse the same color, and Bert and Lisa also call it "Yucko Pink" when he questions the choice of color.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Cyril's old doorknocker. Lisa finds it among Cyril's old stuff and thinks about putting it on the front door of the clubhouse. Later, when Cyril sees it, he realizes the clubhouse belongs to Cedric and changes his mind about demolishing it.
  • Enemy Compassion: When Cyril finds Lisa crying because she had to break up with Donna for refusing to smoke, Cyril helps her feel better by giving her a pep talk about the merits of individuality. Lisa is surprised by his generosity and tells him that he's not as bad as everybody warned her he was.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Bentley is childish enough to pretend to smoke a cigarette, but he's also smart enough to recognize the negative effects it could have on him if he started smoking for real.
    • Lisa also disapproves of the idea of Bentley smoking, and the thought of him getting involved is what makes her officially swear off it.
  • Fantasy Sequence: Lisa has a daydream about a skunk in a tracksuit who shows her the dangers of smoking.
  • Instant Wristwatch: During one scene, Cedric suddenly has a watch on his arm that Lisa looks at and realizes she has to meet up with Donna at the train station.
  • Of Course I Smoke: When Bert catches Lisa smoking cigarettes with Donna, Lisa lies that she's been smoking for months. After Donna offers her a light, she coughs up smoke.
  • One-Shot Character: This is the only episode that features Donna.
  • Scare 'Em Straight: It's implied that Lisa's daydream about the hazards of smoking tobacco is what convinces her to quit smoking cigarettes.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: When Cyril realizes he has to demolish Cedric's clubhouse as part of his initiation to the Lock Links club, he decides against it and instead consoles Lisa, who's sad that Donna rejected her as a friend.
  • Second-Face Smoke: When Bert tells Donna that smoking cigarettes can kill her, Donna shows she doesn't care by blowing smoke in Bert's face.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The skunk in Lisa's daydream has only about a minute of screentime, but he shows her the negative effects of smoking, which puts her down the path of quitting.
  • Smoking Is Not Cool: This is the message of the Raccoons' side of the story. Bert tries to warn Lisa that she should stop smoking, Lisa learns the hard way that smoking could take its toll on her, and Cyril tells Lisa that he'd like to quit smoking, too, but can't.
  • Smug Smiler: The skunk who appears in Lisa's daydream almost always has a smug grin on his face whenever his mouth is visible.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Donna proves to be one to Lisa by pressuring her into smoking cigarettes and breaking up with her when she refuses.
  • Very Special Episode: This episode tackles the subject of peer pressure and smoking.
