Just when the clue seemed within their grasp, Claudia's arrival brings everything down around Team Zym, forcing all parties to make a hasty retreat from Umber Tor and an enraged Rex Igneous. During the chaos Rayla discover's not only that her suspicions about Viren's survival were correct, but also what truly happened to her family.

Janai must now decide what path she will lead her people down in the sight of the Six Horns, when she answers her brothers Blood Duel challenge.

Tropes:

  • Apologetic Attacker: Terry apologizes to Soren for stuffing his mouth with leaves.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Zubeia arrives in the nick of time to save the heroes from getting killed by a furious Rex.
  • Big Damn Hug: After seeing her safely emerge from the rubble after fearing her dead, Callum pulls Rayla into a hug, after wrestling with his conflicting feelings about her since her return, finally admitting he's glad she's back and safe, signifying the start of their relationship mending. This quickly turns into a Group Hug with the rest of their friends.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Not only does Viren reclaim his lost staff and starts succumbing to the corruption of dark magic once again, but he, Claudia and Terry also have the map to Aaravos' prison, making them one step closer to freeing him. Meanwhile, the heroes not only fail to obtain said map, but they part on bad terms with Rex Igneous, making it unlikely the archdragon will help them in the future. The only things that stop it from being a straight-up Downer Ending are that Janai defeats Karim, Rayla has obtained the coins holding her parents and Runaan, Zubeia manages to force Rex Igneous to back down and let the others leave, and Callum appears to be reconciling with Rayla.
  • Bound and Gagged: Soren is already bound but when he tries to shout and warn his friends Terry stuffs his mouth with vines.
  • Call-Back: Once again, Rayla invokes a Deliberate Injury Gambit to counter Claudia's sleeping spell, though this time using her blade to stab Rex Igneous in the leg to wake him up rather than herself after the spell had already been done. As detailed in Gone Horribly Right, it works, but not without heavy consequence this time.
  • Challenging the Chief: Karim challenges Janai to a Duel to the Death because he wants to seize the throne from his sister who he thinks is leading his tribe astray. According to Janai, the practice had been outlawed by their grandmother who realized that if anyone could just randomly challenge the reigning monarch, the monarch will be more concerned with potential challengers than actually ruling their nation in the first place.
Janai: Blood duels have been forbidden since the time of Aditi, you know our grandmother made the ritual illegal because it was nonsense! Fools constantly challenging kings and queens to fight, when their focus should be on the kingdom. On ruling!
  • Chekhov's Gun: Terry's "goofy goo" comes in handy when they have to make an imprint from the map on Rex's teeth.
  • The Coats Are Off: Karim tosses his cape aside to signal the beginning of the Duel to the Death.
  • Collapsing Lair: Rex's lair starts collapsing after he goes berserk over the assumed betrayal of the heroes.
  • Continuity Nod: After getting knocked down by Rex, Ez assures a worried Soren he's just got a case of the "Toasty toesies" the same way he assured Callum back in Through The Ice.
  • Crisis Catch And Carry: Soren carries Ezran out of the Collapsing Lair after the latter got incapacitated trying to soothe Rex.
  • Desperate Object Catch: Rayla lets out a Big "NO!" and jumps after the pouch with the soul coins Claudia dropped into the lava. She doesn't catch it in time but Stella conjures up a portal through which the pouch falls into safety.
  • Evil Is Petty: Claudia throws the pouch containing the soul coins into the lava so Rayla will release Terry, only for Rayla to find out it was just a pouch of rocks. This is so pointlessly cruel that Terry calls Claudia out on it, and she tosses the real pouch to Rayla.
  • Eye Awaken: A close-up of Rex opening his eyes when he gets woken up by Rayla's stab.
  • Get It Over With: Karim demands his sister to finish him off after his defeat.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Rayla's solution for snapping Rex Igneous — a massive dragon who previously threatened to eat her and her friends — out of Claudia's sleeping spell is to stab him in the leg. Rex wakes up before Claudia and her allies can do any more harm... and promptly goes berserk and tries to kill everyone, including Rayla and her friends. Probably not helping matters is that Rayla didn't have time to pull the blade back out of Rex Igneous' leg, meaning he was in pain the whole time.
  • He's Back!: After spending most of the season lamenting what his ambition cost him and being terrified of his old staff, Viren reclaims it and the final shot shows him succumbing to the corruption of dark magic once again.
  • Heel Realization: Claudia promises Rayla to exchange Terry (who Rayla has taken hostage) to the coins holding her parents and Runaan, but instead tricks her with a bag containing nothing but pebbles. Terry calls out Claudia on her cruelty, and apparently this touches a nerve, as she then gives the actual coins to Rayla.
  • I Have Your Wife: Rayla grabs Terry to force Claudia to surrender. Claudia turns it back on her by revealing the pouch of soul coins containing Rayla's family. When Rayla won't accept a trade, she throws the pouch into the lava so Rayla will try to save it.
  • Internal Reveal: Twofold. Rayla finally learns what became of her parents and Runaan, and that Viren is indeed alive, as she feared.
  • It's Probably Nothing: The two guards in front of Umber Tor dismiss the noises the heroes make on the inside for a Growling Gut.
  • The Last Straw: It takes Bait's admittedly weak push to finally get the front gate of Umber Tor to budge.
  • Let's Get Out of Here: Line said by Soren when Rex's lair starts collapsing.
  • Lightning/Fire Juxtaposition: When Zubeia stops him from killing Zym and his friends, Rex Igneous roars at her while conjuring plumes of magma in a threat display. Zubeia's response is to roar right back while summoning a massive thunderstorm, raining bolts of lightning everywhere.
  • Mama Bear: When Zubeia arrives to find Rex Igneous about to kill Zym and his friends, she stands protectively over them, and out-roars him with the implicit threat of electrocuting him if he doesn't back down.
  • Mighty Roar: Zubeia and Rex Igneous both give off intimidating roars during their climactic confrontation.
  • Open Sesame: When the heroes attempt to open the front gate of Umber Tor, Soren tries this spell but, unsurprisingly, it doesn't have any effect.
  • Raised Hand of Survival: The first sign of Rayla having survived the Collapsing Lair is her arm rising up from underneath the rubble.
  • Skyward Scream: Rayla lets out an anguished cry when it appears she's been robbed of her family for a second time.
  • Smelly Feet Gag: Soren uses the stench of his smelly feet to wake up Rayla. She decides to spare Rex the same experience and rather go for a stab in the leg.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Karim is reduced to ranting about the Sunfire Elves' "history" when he is not killed in his Duel to the Death, but rather arrested by the very generals he wanted to arrest Janai.
Karim: This is history! We cannot deny it. History demands that you…
  • Visible Odor: Soren's feet are so pungent after days of travel, they emit green stink lines when Zym pulls one of his boots off. He then uses the smell to wake Rayla up from Claudia's sleep spell.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Terry calls out Claudia for swapping the coin pouch just to spite Rayla, since it in no way materially benefits her to do so, outright calling the trick cruel and contrary to how her previous actions were more in line with Necessarily Evil behavior. Claudia is shamed into giving Rayla the pouch.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Viren's response to encountering Rayla.
